Whacha Been Up To......

Besides that grey water buffalo belt above I did a bunch of gun leather, a pair of chinks and a set of wrist cuffs the last few days. Didn't get pics of the chinks, the cuffs or a plain Rangeflap holster.

Scoped rifle scabbard:

This scabbard is for one of the lever guns with a large loop lever:

Real cool to see a big box of our stuff opened in Norway. Notice the kitchen knife on the cutting board. Part of a set I made for Per and Sonja two years ago:

Sonja likes her sage colored Horsewright Sandwashed Silk wildrag.

A little bigger edger on something that thick might help too. I'd use at least a #4.

Figuring out how to adjust the speed on the big new Cobra 4. Four sets of eight foot long reins. Each is 10oz harness leather sewed to 6/7 oz very firm oil tan lining.

Sewing all 64 ft of these reins at the preset speed of 1200 rpm was slooooooow. Here I pumped it up to 2900 rpm. Plenty fast but still slow enough for control. Oops my math was off 128 feet of sewing and now rubbing the edges.

Not sure how you kept that from gettin' all squirrely. I'd have probably sewn my fingers to it.....

I def. need another (larger) edger. I think the one I've been using (and the only one I have that's worth anything) is a #2.

Yeah I used a #4 on those reins and your sheath looks thicker.

I've been up to.... alligator flank.

That looks great !!!! And so does your edge work ! The whole thing looks great really nice job !!!!

Im still dialing in my edge process to. I have to say I’m having a blast trying all the different stuff. But boy I wish somebody mention you can go broke buying all this stuff lol :-) !!!!!!

Have you tried a French edger ? Not that I’m good enough yet to give out advice, still newbie here :-) But I’ve found mine really useful for many tasks. Fills a void between edgers I think, but again what do I know lol :-)

Wow those numbers would make me run away lol ! That’s some serious work ! But your work speaks volumes of your skill level with leather !

Thanks! And yes, I learned very quickly (although no one told me either!!) that you CAN go broke buying all this stuff !! But always remember....the cheap becomes expensive, so buy the best that you can, when you can. (wish I'd have taken my own advice along the way......~!!). I have not tried a french edger, but will def. look at them.

Those French edgers never much fit in with how I work but lots of folks use em. Amy, we keep coming back to the Osborne edgers, they seem to work the best for us and are very easy to resharpen. Bout half the time Nichole is coming out and using the Osbornes and not using the BKs on her bench.

Took about 2-3 hours to rub the edges on all 128 feet of those reins! Got em done though. One guy stopped by and picked up his pair already yesterday. Another pair (stitched with royal blue thread) ships to AZ and the other two pair are for stock.

Sold another set of those reins. Here they are getting used over the weekend. Reins, water buffalo headstall (holds the bit in the horses mouth) and water buffalo curb strap (under the horses chin) by Horsewright:

Tyler's new shotgun chaps we finished Fri night just in time for the weekend works. this is a new chrome tan water buffalo that we've found.

Lucia forgot her chinks in the other trailer, she's wearing her boyfriend Salty's pair. She's wearing a Horsewright knife there too:

Lots of times a guy can stick a pair of channel locks inside and open them in the tight spots to loosen em up a bit. Thanks.

Great work Makael. Interesting stitching patterns perfectly done.

I’ve been trying to attempt at least one new thing with each project. This time it was doing a belt/boot clip on this bird and trout sheath. I’m wondering if others keep on hand lighter weight leather for things like the little pouch here for the clip. I used the same weight as the sheath and it seemed thick to me both in end result and when trying to work stitching around that small area. I tried skiving a piece down, but that was far too uneven. I ended up removing that and going back to just a full weight piece.

Very nice work! Yeah I keep a side of 4/5 oz around for thin projects. You can get horsehide butts in 5/7 oz that is usually pretty thin and then ya don't have to buy a whole side. the butts are usually $15-$20

Little bit of recent stuff:

Been doing a lot of oak carving lately.

I think dyeing the leather kinda sucks some of the detail out.

Much prefer the natural look of just oiled and our slight antique mixture.

Finished up three pairs of shotgun chaps, all from this new, really cool, water buffalo chap leather.

Tyler's.

Cara's. Hers are a little different as she had found a double shoulder of this pinkish leather called Bandito Rose. Original thought was to build her a pair of chinks out of this leather but when she ordered it there was only one piece, no mas. So not enough leather to do that but then I came up with the idea of using it as a contrasting leather on her armitas style shotguns. So the fringe, leg cuff, pocket and leg reinforcement are this bandito rose leather. Nichole stitched their brand in pink on Cara's and white on Tyler's and she made Cara's pink wool vest too.

We were out "prowling" a week ago today, just checking cattle and fences. There was a coyote by some calves and Tyler grabbed his 30-30 out of his scabbard I'd made him a few years back, but coudn't get a shot. There were cattle behind the coyote as it ran off.

Bestest dog ever, we buried under this tree. We'll stop and pay her a visit now and then.

She liked to sit on a hill and look out and watch the world go by. Thats why we picked this tree.

New member here. Beautiful work on this post, (not to mention some amazing landscapes). I've been forging knives for almost 20 years. Just started making my own sheaths. I'm still learning the ins and outs of working with leather. Mostly trying oak and beech leaves. (attempting to attach an image here)
