What’s your favorite large folder with 4 inch or greater blade?

I like any of the Demko designed a Cold Steels. Would definitely check out the AD10 for 90% of the blade in 75% of the handle of the 4max.

Crooked River is another great suggestion.

it’s shorter than your requested length but the Spyderco Shaman is a great knife.

I also like the Strider SMF although this forum is down on Strider in general.

Here’s my
The Shiro 111 is my favorite, but the price is painful and I wouldn’t carry anything that costly on an Alaskan hunting trip. I also have a Real Steel Megalodon (just under 4”), a WE 614 (discontinued) and a ZT 0452 (also discontinued). I’d recommend any of them.

Here’s my 111 next to a Lone Wolf T3 that I wont carry cause it’s as bulky as my sheath knives. The Shiro has at least the same length of cutting edge, and fits in my pocket reasonably comfortably.

I just checked out those Striders and they sure look nice!

My only issue with them is kind of the same with most of the frame locks I’ve tried (we’ve got a pile of 4” spartan folders and a few hinderer’s) here in Alaska, we are libel to be washing our hands off with snow when we are cleaning our game, grabbing ahold of a plain titanium handle is both cold, and slippery. I love the knives, but just don’t take ‘em in the woods with me, they pretty much reside in the case at home.

My son used one of them BM Crooked Rivers on his caribou, I had to finish it off with my Spyderco after his edge went dull. (I hate it that I’m starting to sound like a Spyderco advert, in fact I keep looking cause I’m secretly hoping for a better solution, but I gotta be honest, so far, the military sv90 has been the best match for my uses). He used that BM Rukus on moms ‘bou and it got the whole job done as well.

The smallest (Camillus) CUDA MAXX has a 5 1/2" blade. I just bought one yesterday on the bay. The largest, with a 9" blade is long enough for roasting marshmallows. The 9" MADD MAXX is a Darrel Ralph custom. The 5 1/2" & 7" CUDAs were made by Camillus.View attachment 1293802
I hate to sound lazy, and I certainly gonna do some searching here in a minute, but what kind of locking mechanisms do these have? Thanks!

For your intended purpose I'd highly suggest looking in to Strider knives. Specifically the new M.Strider SMF. They are tough as nails and have a 4" blade.
It can take a beating without having to worry much at all about it, and they are made with different grinds, so you can choose what you'd prefer to prioritize, whether that be slicing ability or strength and so on, along with a variety of steels.

The only drawback of this would be price as they are quite costly, and also quite rare to come by in general.

Alternatively you could go with a Chris Reeve Umnumzaan, the blade length is only about 3.6-3.7" however, so not quite the 4" mark your looking for, however I'd say that is probably your best bet along with the Strider SMF.

I'd also suggest staying away from the Microtech Socom Elite for your purpose. They run on ceramic ball bearings in the pivot and require a good bit of upkeep if used in dirty environments like soil/dust/sand..... they are corrosive which many people don't realize, so after a while of the pivot being gunked up the ceramic balls will begin to get "pitted" making for a super grainy action, and if left like this for a period of time the balls will basically fall apart and render the knife inoperable, so you won't even be able to open the knife. -- I dislike knives like this for the tasks you're faced with out there as they require the extra care and maintenance that some other knives dont, so why give yourself the extra work and hassle and potential head ache of having to deal with such a thing.

Good luck on your search, hope ya find something that works for ya!

I sure appreciate that insight, your reading my mind spot

I sure appreciate your advice, your spot on with regards to reading my mind about how I’m gonna treat a knife if it makes it into my pack or pocket out in the woods. I’ve been close to buying an Umnumzaan a couple times now, it’s probably time I give one a whirl! Thanks again!

I know the OP is planning on spending $200ish for this large folder, but consider this 4.5" blade for only a quarter of that price - made with sandvik 14c28n steel - realsteel takin

Sounds like the right size for sure! I’ll take a look and see what I can find!

BTW, I’m actually not stuck on any particular price point here, I don’t think you’ll be able to talk me into anything to equal the cost of what all I’ve got piled into the drawer and in these knife rolls that I’m never gonna carry and will probably end up passing on to the grandkids;).

No idea. My longest folding blade is the 3 3/4 inch. (Buck 110 and Old Timer 6OT/7OT.)
But you can only clean a 7.5” tall fish with them, I’m hoping to catch a 9” tall one before I get too old to wade the rivers here;). (But, I share your attraction for the 110 and the Old Timer! I still remember my first of each, and still have a few of each floating around here to this day!)

I'm all for the Spyderco Military when it's big folder time.

what a cool pic! Wish I could take ‘em like that! And yup, I almost wonder if I’m not just wasting my time and should just pick up a few more of these for the rest of the guys in the family!

I love my Artisan Cutlery Proponent. They now have the cheaper models in g10 and carbon fiber for around $60 so it won't sting to bad if it disappears. But what would really set this apart for your needs is it comes with a threaded pin that threads thru a hole in the frame while the blade is open basically turning it into a fixed blade. The thing is built like a tank.

Thanks for the kind words buddy.
You have shown an amazing big folder collection I xan only dream if.

Love your white Shiro 111 and the big ass Spyderco Subvert. Both grail material in my world :D

Cold Steel Voyager in clip point. Tri -Ad lock, AUS 10 A steel, light weight, and best of all......can be had for under 60 bucks. Buy a couple for spares. Rock on.

For the price - they can't be beat and having one in your pocket, another in your pack and even a back-up for the back-up is not a horrible thing for the price of just one more expensive knife that would not perform better enough to justify the price delta. That said, if the ergos don't work for you - then my opinion may only be of value for the others reading this thread.

I have the 4-max and a bunch of other Triad lock Cold Steel knives; they are all performers but the AD-10 is my favorite. It doesn't meet your 4" requirement, but a nice 5" Kephart like the Becker BK62 stashed safely in your pack would not be very heavy, can handle those "tall" fish we both hope you catch and is a downright dandy knife for doing just about anything in the wild. If you are also going to "pack" a knife, throw in a very lightweight and very handy Spyderco Catcherman while you're at it for cleaning fish. Having one knife to do it all is a compromise on all counts.

Let's face it, the advantage of having a knife on you is that, well, it's on you when you need a knife. That being said, if you down a game animal, which, as we all know, is when the real work begins, you have time to fetch a fixed blade from your pack. But your question was about a folder and in you pocket weight matters more than in your pack - so while I would respectfully suggest compromise on your 4" requirement for a pocket knife and having a larger fixed blade safely available someplace else, I think a Triad lock Cold Steel that fits your hand would suit you fine and if under 4" can be tolerated, the AD-10 is hard to beat for you. Too bad the ergos of the Voyager don't suit you as having three of them around ain't a bad thing; they punch way above the ($) weight. I also have a couple CS Recon-1 knives, they are very similar to the Voyagers but have G10 slabs.

Though I believe it to be otherwise a strong lock, I am not a fan of the Axis lock for a hunting knife. IMHO, those dainty little springs and related goins-ons of the Axis lock don't get along well with the blood, guts, gristle and fat ... and all the dirty things we hunters do with knifes. Disclosure: I do have and enjoy my Adamas, but I don't use it for hunting.

I've got a bunch of Emersons ... too many, actually, so I am not anti-Emerson but for your purposes I've never found them to cut as well as all of the other options discussed in this thread and the blood, guts, gristle, fat and the dirty things I mentioned in the preceding paragraph ain't so great for liner locks either. Emerson knives have their purpose and I've never considered field dressing game and other hunting chores among them.

CRK Sebenza is a great choice and a frame lock works for a hunter.
I've field dressed many, many, many deer and other critters with Buck 110s; they are very good and if you get a Buck Custom Shop one or one of their other offerings in a more premium steel than 420HC, you really have something!
I don't buy Strider knives so I cannot comment on their performance afield.

Now that I'm done rambling, and even in the face of you wanting only a folder of four inches, please forgive my thread deviation and indulge/consider the following scenario:

Cold Steed AD-10 in you pocket (or Sebenza, or ???) and a fixed blade or two (much preferred for so much of what we hunters do with knives) in a pack.

Happy hunting!

Only one recommendation so far in this thread for the Police 4, but it was the first knife I thought. The supply of K390 P4’s is rapidly dwindling though, so go get one! Big-bad-blade with truly top-tier steel and it carry’s smaller than it’s size.
