What 5 knives should every knut own?

When I started in the gun world I got some good advice. I followed it.
1. Get a 22LR rifle. Check
2. Get a 12 Ga pump Shotgun. Check
3. Get a 30-06 bolt rifle. Check
4. Get a 45 or 9mm pistol. Check
5. Continue adding for the rest of your life. Enjoy.

Now in knives, I just started off with gifts etc. and just bought whatever I liked at the time.

This list has provided some guidance. I am missing some that are listed but have many that would do the job.

Funny, few would argue with my above gun list (note they didn't tell me which brand) except in small part I am sure.

I appreciate the info as it is more specific than what I got when I started in guns. Brand listed, model etc. Useful.

Nice lists.

SAK
KaBar USMC or Pilot Survival depending on your length preference. (or both)
Spyderco Endura/Delica/Salt type EDC
Last two, your choice. Lots of good ones out there.

1.Old slipjoint camp/Boyscout knife or a Leatherman/SAK.
2.Spyderco Endura any gen. This one is my Grinner my mom got me one for my 13 Bday.
3.Large chopper RD9,CS Trailmaster,Greco Bowie,Kabar or if you can a Busse.
4.A drop point utility/hunter with good steel and a comfortable handle.
5.Something that catches your eye whatever it is that makes you think about it until you get it and still sometimes even when it`s in your pocket or on your belt it just makes you grin;)

An older Stag Case Trapper.

Spyderco Military or Endura

Sebenza

Randall (any with stag)

Any of the smaller Dozier's(I like the Arkansas Traveler)

Its hard to stop at just 5.

Sebenza -- Ti framlock in S30V
How can you be a knife nut without a Sebbie?

Spyderco Military -- liner lock in S90V
How can you not have a top-end stainless?

Benchmade AFCK -- axis lock in M4 (about to be released)
How can you not have an AFCK in a top-end non-stainless steel?

Busse Natural Outlaw in Infi
How can you not have a Busse?

Spyderco Para -- compression lock in CPM D2
How can you find a better small knife with such cool steel?

Agree. For the firearms list the bolt must have a scope. Some people would split the handguns up and have a good revolver in .357 plus an autoloading handgun. Many people would list a specfic gun, or a few to select from, for each category though. I'll spare the details as this is a knife forum.

I started really getting into knives just recently. That's just what I need. Guns, flashlights, and knives. aye yi yi

But anyway these lists are great for getting my bearings. Plus I've had a serrated edge Spyderdo Delica for a few years now so I'll say I have one covered. :)

One observation: I expected at least a few more peopel to put a waved Emerson on the list. Kind of surprised me.

I'd go for "classic" designs to allow one to appreciate the various aspects of a good knife:

Buck 110
Spyderco Military
Benchmade 710
Standard SAK - a basic model Victronix or Wenger
Laminated Mora type knife

I think every one should try:

1. A Slip joint in carbon steel (classic folder that still works like few others)
2. A SAK (one knife that everyone has, not just knife nutz is an SAK, how can you be a knife enthusiast if you don’t have the one knife that everyone has?)
3. A high end Ti Frame lock (Sebenza or SNG, heck try both they get talked about a lot on these boards and how can you join in the discussion without at least having tried them)
4. Classic Benchmade like the 710 (Need I say more?)
5. Classic Spyderco like the Military (see above reason.

These aren’t necessarily knives everyone should own, simply knives that everyone should try. When you get a general education in the classics you don’t read every classic work, rather you sample some of the better ones from each style and genre to give you a more comprehensive view of what’s out there.

1- Buck 110
2- SAK
3- Opinel
4 - A medium fixed blade (BRKT or Dozier)
5- A large chopper or machete (Tram)

All of life's chores can be addressed with one or a combionation of these!

My extreme survival knife kit (for 6 months in the wilderness, lets say, woods of Kamchatka or plains of Tierra del Fuego):

1. Fehrman LC or Busse SAR4 DC
2. Busse NMSFNO or Fehrman FS
3. Fällkniven F1
4. Bradley Alias 1 or Spyderco Military
5. Victorinox Outrider

Hmm, now I think about it. Due to weight, I would probably take one 'bigger' knife with me and 2 or 3 folders + Fällkniven F1, my standard companion.

So...

1. Fehrman LC
2. Fällkniven F1
3. Bradley Alias 1
4. Victorinox Outrider
5. Spyderco Military

I'm guilty of not having all the stuff on my own list. Don't know what my excuse is. ;)

1. Victorinox SAK of one's choice
2. Opinel no. 6 or 8
3. Kabar or Buck 110 or 112 (these guys are tied... American classics!)
4. Mora
5. A good khukuri

Opinel #7
Mora ( whichever suits)
Tram Machete
buck 110
pilot survival or marine utility

all of these blades are cheap, well known and can be used as a point of comparison for every other knife. they are also common enough that when someone asks say for a folder longer and tougher than a 110, but with a similar handle size, it is easy for them to get good advice. likewise the fixed blades. for a small price, one can find out what they like, if they break the opinel, they know they don't need a slicer, if they hate the blade shape of the marine, then that tells them something as well.YMMV

There are so many more that could be added to the list. But this is what I'm going with:

1. Buck 110
2. Spyderco Endura
3. Swiss Army Knife
4. Randall
5. Benchmade 42 balisong

Buck 110
a stockman or trapper
a straight hunting knife such as a Buck 119 or 105
an SAK
a one-hander such as a Spyderco Delica or Endura

SAK seems to make almost every list. mine too. hmmm...

Fallkinven F1
Spyderco Delica
SAK soldier (old style)
Buck 110
Sebenza

1.BUCK 110 &/or 119 ...or a Kabar
2.Kershaw Leek (any variation) &/or a Spyderco
3.Vic SAK &/or Leatherman
4.Benchmade 710 or Griptilian
5.Traditional Trapper, Jack or Barlow

Also down the line of knife-knutdom,it is of my own opinion that one should aquire at least one Sebenza, just to see & feel what all the hype is about.I did & couldn't be happier with my Seb.It truly is the knife of exact specifications ;)
