What about knives/knife people just makes you laugh?

the whole hard use folder thing gets me. i understand wanting something that is quailty made and will last years, but i feel like people have convinced themselves that if their folder doesnt have a .25" blade with thicker Ti slabs for handles that it's going to break.

That's because you're just a "casual user" and you're not manly enough to handle such hardware, LOL.

I use all sorts of knives with various steels and handle materials, but I will say that the current knives Cold Steel produces are pretty rock solid. Though I do think many of the fixed blades are overpriced for materials used. I'd say they're beater knife level, but you can REALLY beat the s*** out of them, especially with the Tri-Ad lock.

What would you use in their place, for the price?

The offerings of Ontario Knife Company. Good ol' 1095. The grips of their SP line are better than Cold-Steel garbage. OKC has their share of military-bro marketing, though they're actually built for military, so ultimately it fits. Cold-Steel is built for man-children, period.

and for you whiny saps that have invested their ego into Cold-Steel middle-aged mall ninja marketing, any one product is representative of the overall integrity of a company. That's why, for the price, a 35 dollar Spyderco Tenacious inspires just as much confidence as their Military. Do you seriously expect an average consumer to pay 50 dollars for haphazardly treated AUS-8, just to discover its trashiness, and to then turn around and perhaps pay even more money for the same garbage so as to call what was in the first place a garbage company, a garbage company, by sheer number of quantity purchased? You're dumb.

I would say keep wasting 70+ dollars of your money on mangled AUS-8 from Cold-Steel, but you idiots are actually creating the inflationary bubble that allows Benchmade, for example, to gouge the consumer by arbitrary raising their prices, regardless that the Griptilian, great as it is, is the same 70 dollar knife it was 10 years ago, now costing 120-150!!

You need to relax. The language and insults aren't necessary and only make your opinions appear juvenile.

The youngster (he was under thirty) who scorned my Buck 110 because it was, well, a Buck 110. He said, "What the hell is that? It's a Buck knife! What good is that for? It has no pocket clip, needs two hands to open, two hands to close, is heavy, is in a sheath. You should see my [can't remember what brand he mentioned]." Then he really p'ed me off. "That's an old man's knife." I opened it up, slammed it point first into a 2" thick pine coaster on the table, where it split the coaster and embedded into the table (damaging only the coaster and table, I needn't add). I smiled and told him to whip his out (innuendo intended), whereupon he blushed and told us all at the table that his girlfriend doesn't let him carry his knife in public. All us forty-to-fifty-somethings laughed and sneered and told him to get the F out. Then, to my pleasure, all us grownups had a good look at the 1975 Buck 110 with my big brother's initials engraved in the bolster and talked about our favorite hard use tools and camping and fishing and hunting and the knives we had as kids and what we used them for and "what were we thinking?!" moments.

Of course, there was beer involved in the performance of this event.

How many infractions have you got in the last few days cause it should be quite a few. Trolling & laungage should have got you spanked pretty hard by the MOds. I don't know if i would like the whole CS line-up cause haven't tried them all but the ones i have i love. If the only one you have had is Kobun what makes you the expert on their quality? Not all Cold Steel knives are AUs 8 either. Agreed CS markets to kids with their videos making them appear to be budazz warrior ninja's and puts people off to them (including me sometimes with the ridiculousness of the video's, although entertaining) but the fact is some of their knives are fantastic. I'm at the stage on here where i don't want to bash other companies to bits just because i prefer another brand for the most part. I keep it to myself cause the only person that knows which knife is right for you is you. If you have a problem with CS that's fine but having only had one of their knives and saying they all sux is complete ignorance. I like my Benchmades best for folders but still have a great appreciation for my Holdout 1,2,3 and Recon 1 and Tanto GI. They truly are fantastic for the price espeacially. Recon 1's right now $40 or under, holdout 1,2,3 around $35. GI $19 shipped! Hard to beat that. Like other brands too but can't deny CS makes good knives at affordable prices. More than i can say for some others.

We ARE going to stop discussing each other. If you can't stay on topic, I recommend hurling your computer in to the nearest body of water.

BTW, I thought the question was what makes us laugh, not what makes us see red or become irrational. I told a story that (I thought) was funny. Everyone present laughed (even the guy who got shamed, much to his credit). Enough with the "that's a lousy knife" replies, eh?

Very nice anecdote, thanks for sharing

I did stay on topic, I just called people names in the process, like "idiot". Fine, I won't call people "dumb" anymore but I will attack garbage, and I'll call a shit company a shit company if I see fit. I'm a grown man and, within the bounds of common decency, I'll curse a company as I'd like, thank you very much.

Yeah, Cold-Steel has that GI Tanto that you people keep bringing up ad infinitum in your defense, but look at the handle on that thing. At best I'll say its designed like a bayonet, yet it's not a bayonet! 10 dollars more for an OKC SP1 with a handle that is actually ergonomic, and better carbon steel!

Cold-Steel, SOG and Gerber should be boycotted for inflationary pricing, cutthroat business models and forced into bankruptcy. Who's with me?!?

What you will do is follow the rules of this site or you'll be on your way out the door.

OK, evosbu1, we're with you. Your points are made and taken. We have all nodded politely and smiled. Now pipe down and let the grownups tell their fun stories like this thread was meant for. "Attack garbage" and so forth as you see fit in another thread, another forum, another internet, or, if you can manage it, another planet. You're harshing my mellow.

Saying I get "bent out of shape" would be a pretty dramatic overstatement. :)

Certainly in comparison to the anti-Cold Steel Crusader! :D
It would be hard to overstate his depth of hatred. ;)

That's not specifically staying within the rules.

You want to see a Cold Steel product that's actually durable? Have a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J784S8eQZ8 Four minutes of pounding away at a tree with a Cold Steel machete before finally bringing it down, thicker around than the guy's leg, and no damage to the blade.

And I'd say this video shows that the Kobun is a lot tougher than you give it credit for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIwbIpIlcFg Just to save you the trouble if you don't feel like believing your own eyes, first the guy cut down a tree limb with it, then he shaved his arm, then he punctured a steel gas can with the tip, and then he shaved some more arm hair, just to show edge retention ability.

Cold-Steel, SOG and Gerber should be boycotted for inflationary pricing, cutthroat business models and forced into bankruptcy. Who's with me?!?

You see those Cold Steel and SOG sections in the manufacturer's forums? They're business partners with the forum. You're suggesting attacking the people who help pay for the forums.

So what? Any knife will fail if used improperly.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that knives not meant for hard use aren't going to be made out of hard use steels. There's no need to use the more expensive 1095 steel in a knife that's not designed for rigorous, wood splitting, car puncturing work. The Kobun wasn't built to contend with the BK9 or the SP10, so it doesn't need to be built to similar standards.

Making proper use of a knife is a lot like making proper use of a gun. You have to be selective about what you want to do with a specific platform, and tailor accordingly. You can't just grab the first thing you see and say you're going to use it as you see fit. That's like trying to cram .30-06 rifle cartridges into a .243 chamber; a recipe for disaster.
