I see what you mean, Andy. Our family business is labor intensive, but we do not employ illegals. One, our crews are small and whether we have 5 guys or 15 guys, it's going to take 5-7 days to do the job. The materials can only cure so fast, a backhoe can only scoop so much dirt, etc. As a matter of fact, i don't think we have ever been approached by migrant workers of any type for work. I suppose there are plenty of landscaping jobs that are more ag oriented around. Another reason we don't really look for migrant work is all the paperwork. We are an honest company that dots i's and crosses t's. That said, we hate stupid pointless paperwork. For us, it's easier to hire a couple of High School drop outs to work for a few weeks, get hot and tired, quit, and hire a couple more than it is to hire a couple of good migrant workers. Don't get me wrong, if the process of getting them legally ready to go was easier and we needed good fast-paced labor, then i would hire some of these guys. They really are super hard workers. However, all we need is warm bodies to dig ditches and pack steel. The skill comes from the 2 or 3 guys that we keep around 12 months out of the year...even when we don't need them.
However, believe you me that if we ever needed lots of guys to do our line of work I would be the watch dog to make sure every damn one of them was legal. Also, there would be no buddies-for-hire-for-cash...EVER. I don't get paid in cash and every week i look at my paystub and see 20 some odd % of my money going to Uncle Sam, well then they're going to pay their's too. I'm a vendictive SOB like that;)

HD, NRA ain't the High Church. It's a political action group with a single issue, and it makes alliances without checking with you or me. :D

The Gangstas were hitting up only private parties walking around with handguns to sell. I watched them for two hours. Two guys said they needed to see driver's licenses and the lads just walked away. They bought everything from trash .22's to a .44 Mag Desert Eagle - really any handgun a private party was looking to sell -- without seeing ID. They also paid the first askin' price. Hey, win, win, right? :rolleyes:

I guess OH has a bit more ghetto areas than here. Everytime there's a shooting over here in Charleston or Huntington in the low income area it almost always involves a local person and one from Columbus, Cleveland or Akron and a drug deal:rolleyes:

does the INS have a "drop a dime on crime" line? i have to wonder. every year they truck in about 30 guys to do landscaping here, the same company does roofing. they are literally bussed in, and out. seems none of them have cars. nor english. i'm guessing they're paid by cash. cheap too. they also do very sucky work. mowing while raining. pruning trees to death. hacking bushes down. "no speak english" while they cheerfully destroy the sod and you politely try to point that out. management just smiles and nods and says "this is who they sent"...

unfortunately, the very people that could prevent a lot of this, are probably the ones most benefiting by it.

I live in Ohio. We have a "colony" of illegals that lives in one area of town. The local newspaper tells the story.or at least the police reports section does.

Every night there is a list of Hispanic names arrested for:
Drunk and disorderly
DUI
Driving w/o a licence
Breaking and entering
Theft
Assault....and so on.
BTW,one shot a local sheriff deputy in the back of

f the head last year. The deputy was taking him to a gas station because he ran out .
I will admit that I AM NOT particularly objective on this subject.
 
You're a good man Jake. I think the problem for most businesses is that one moment of weakness. Once you start hiring illegals your business is addicted to the cheap labor. Illegals = crack for businesses.
 
The thing is the if the gangsta guys have no criminal record, then it wouldn't really matter. However if they bought them at a gunstore, and the guns were later used in a crime the guns could be traceable back to them I assume.

However if they bought them at the gunshow and then they were used in a crime they would only be traced back (if at all) to the original owner and the buyer would be off the hook if they potentially sold it to a convict. I personally am not in favor of background checks at gunshows but if I lived in an area with a lot of gang activity I might be.
 
Gang activity and illegal immigration go hand in hand. You'll get your chance HD. They are coming.
 
Yeah there's a few folks here now but amazingly WV has like 5% minority population of all types. We could actually use a few difft (but not illegal) folks just to keep it interesting.:o
