What Are Some Good "Overbuilt" Knives?

Hey, everyone. Just wondering what's out there in the way of beefy knives. Like the kinds that can be used to pry open stuck doors/drawers/etc... . Am curious about both folders & fixed blade, but more about the folders. I think I already know some good overall models, but I figured I'd do some general research on what's available.

Prying with a knife is never a good idea. Right tool for the right job.

However, Esee 5 will stand up to a lot of "abuse" based on how thick the blade stock is.

The Himalayan Imports Chiruwa Ang Khola is half an inch thick, and is guaranteed for use as a crowbar.

And prying with a folder is even a less good idea.

Fixed blades from the Ontario Ranger line (like the RD7) are pretty bombproof.

Grayman and DPx come to mind for both fixed and folders in their lineups. I sure like mine.

Cold Steel has some tough ones at more affordable prices.

Benchmade adamas? Still, beyond that, I doubt I'd try to pry with a folder. I value my fingers too much to risk it. And honestly, I'm not really big into prying with any knife (even fixed blades).

That said, if I was planning on prying/digging, I'd be looking at stuff like this.

Becker BK2, BK3. And the Ontario RD6 Bush Signature series is crazy tough, but I think they're out of production. Its .375in thick S7 in a 6in blade length. Its basically a prybar

Benchmade loco has blown my mind. Overbuilt thick bladestock, a little on the heavy side and somehow lost NO slicing/cutting geometry. Surprised it doesn't have a cult following yet.

Edit: oh yeah, haven't tried pryingwith it, probably won't unless in a life or death situation or something of higher importance than my favorite knife.

For a fixed blade I would say the Becker BK2 and for a folder the Benchmade MPR.

Bk2, bk2, bk2....one of the best over built hard use knives I've ever used...stuck drawer? No challenge this thing could probably pry open a car door lol

Yeah, I wouldn't generally be looking to pry with a folder- just might need to. I figure a small crowbar can be carried in a car or on a motorcycle, but on me is another story. I'll definitely look into that Benchmade Loco, since it gets such a great review.

Severe Toughness in fixed blades? you will never beat Busse at any thickness. But they do cost. You can get tough enough for lot less from ESEE.

Becker bk2 for just a large tough knife. Esee izula or izula 2 for a nice sized sturdy fixed blade (almost pocketable). I would strongly advise against prying with any knife though as you can easily bend or break you tip. Get a serviceable folder like:
Spyderco Delica 4 (my favorite budget knife)
Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Endura 4
Benchmade Griptilian
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Skyline

and then get a small pocket prybar :)

If you must get a folding knife to pry with I would say:

Cold Steel Recon 1 (maybe the tanto point will be strongest)
Spyderco manix 2 g10
Zero Tolerance knives (large heavy folders)

I would really say that if you want a prying knife get a fixed blade or better yet a pry bar. If you do decide to get a folding knife look for one with a thick almost blunt point.

Buck's CSAR-T eats razorblades for breakfast, picks it's teeth with drill rod, and eats anvils topped off with diesel fuel for supper.

I just picked one up this summer at the suggestion of another member here. It's a heavy, sharp, prying and digging beast.

Thick fixed blades I can suggest the Tops Pry Bar, Tops Lil Roughneck (if wanting a smaller fixed), Bark River Bravo 1, BK2, BK3 pyrbar and ESEE 5 come to mind!

Busse Combat, Scrap Yard knives, Swamp Rat Knives.

you could pry a diamond out of Superman's tightly clenched crack with any of their proper offerings.

And if you broke one trying the owners would say "Sweet, Let's replace that for you!"

Google Noss destruction tests.

There are threads out there cutting entire cars to pieces with them! I'm not just talking about stabbing a few hoods or doors. I'm talking peeling like a grape, and dismantling them!

+1.

However, all the brands mentioned make tough stuff.

I've used knives to pry with in a pinch, and yes some of em broke. I'd suggest adding a small pry tool to the arsenal.

Tops Street Scalpel:

Snapped smooth off prying the chain off my own door frame when I locked us out of the house one night. 1/4" thick. Snapped just like glass.
