What Are Some Good "Overbuilt" Knives?

Dpx gear. Fixed blades have pry bars on the end. Their folders are Damon solid as well and stand up to all sorts of abuse I wouldn't put other knives thru. Solid dependable knives that will take a beating.

As said before just about anything Medford. Especially the Praetorian (as far as folders). Of course as said before prying with any knife is bad juju. Pry bars are much cheaper

Man, don't tell that to me. I shredded mine while cutting rope, that surprisingly had a hard wire core. The edge was one jagged mess, and the tip broke off in shards. It's still not back from the factory, and that was 3 months ago.

Personally, I agree with previous posters about using knives for prying. But here are some of the more robust brands: Medford Knife & Tool, Crusader Forge Custom Knives, and Grayman. As you might imagine, these are not inexpensive.

Fixed. ..Busse all the way...I challenge you to try and break the tip off of one.
As for folders, I am a Strider guy. SMF rocks!

Wrong!!! I don't care who made the knife you can still break the tip off any knife if you try to do so intentionally. I will say a Busse is a tough knife and there are many test that have been done to prove it, but a knife's tip can be broken. I once broke the handle off a six foot pipe wrench in the oil fields years ago. Yeah I didn't think it would break either as I got up off the ground. :D

I think the only fixed blade knife I would even think about prying with would be a good dive knife. They are intened to be used as a pry tool, thus have the proper temper and heat treat to pry without breaking.
I would not pry with any folding knife.

Not an overbuilt knife but the one I will use for doing crazy stuff with: Cold Steel GI Tanto. For the price take 10 of them and be sorted for life ... whatever life throws at you. The GI Tanto is the ultimate "a knife is a tool".

Which model n steel was that?

You are correct. However, a Busse (or kin) will take a ton more force to snap than the average blade. Watch their videos sometime. They practically have to be bent in a damn horseshoe shape to not return to true. They have to be bent farther than that, or pounded on to be broken. I'd say you're more than safe for light to moderate and probably even heavy prying with one.

I've used my basic 9 as a prybar lots of times. My take on it was "ok Jerry, if you tell me it's fine to do anything I want with this thing and it's covered? Then I will... MUAHAHAHAHA!" And I have. I have beat the damn tar out of that thing for a decade and a half and can't hardly make it sweat.

Hey, everyone. Just wondering what's out there in the way of beefy knives. Like the kinds that can be used to pry open stuck doors/drawers/etc... . Am curious about both folders & fixed blade, but more about the folders. I think I already know some good overall models, but I figured I'd do some general research on what's available.

Get a crowbar or a "tactical" tomahawk if you want to do stupid things.
Want a blade that can do it? Get a ESEE 5. At least, they'll replace your knife if it breaks.

The only thing that's stupid here is that some people can't see a difference between light prying on occasion or even emergency prying as compared to a job where lots of prying is required...

ZT 0200 has been a great blade for me. It's way overbuilt and heavy...to the point where I compare it to some small EDC handguns. But I love this knife. There are lighter knives that do the job but I just like the way it feels.
