What are the advantages and disadvantages of ZDP-189?

In that case I may start leaving some knives I don't carry much alone in the hopes of the fairy leaving behind some change.

Oh... Sorry, I totally forget about you... You was talking about chopping ... and why should I be concerned?

So once again - ZDP-189 is best production steel on the market for now, holding edge almost as good as Dozier D2 and not brittle. But brittleness is usual cry for every new steel - same was with CPM S30V and many other before. After years of real use I can say that it is not brittle but rather tough.

Thanks, Vassili.

go to around 1:57 the edge looks toothy and does look like it had a few chips.

Vassili, I mean say it. You haven't said it. Sure you've typed it, but that ain't saying it.

Post a YouTube video, but for now I stand by my conclusion that you cannot say "ZDP-189 is the best production steel on the market."

Ummm ...he did. Per Webster's definition of say:

1 :to express in words

Nothing in there about it must be spoken in voice

all in the lighting

i;m not saying it's not good steel.. but i still think those are chips

You are welcome, but there are no chips there and this is obvious I do not see what else I can do for you - if you continue to see chips at 2:08... I can not help here.

Thanks, Vassili.

Watch me - ZDP-189 is best production steel on the market for now, holding edge almost as good as Dozier D2 and not brittle

LOL, you can say it, in bold type, as many times as you want. That doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

Vassili, what you should have said would have been “I have found that ZDP-189 is the best steel on the market based on my own needs, personal preference, insofar as how I use and prefer to use, my knives.”

Someone who needs something else will not find ZDP to be “the best”. If I’m on a fishing boat in heavy salt water then H1 is the best steel, if I’m looking for absolute toughness (independent of another factors) then something like Infi or CMP-3V is “the best”.

Few people are going to say that ZDP-189 is a bad steel, most people here are saying that it’s a very good steel. However to assume that everyone has the same needs and preferences as you is rather egocentric.

Yes, but when you speak it is assumed that you are speaking based on your own needs, personal preference. Otherwise this need to be added to any word any speak.

Thanks, Vassili.

For example 1 + 1 = 2. No one say that this is decimal numbers it is assumed, but in binaries 1 + 1 = 10.
Speaking with mathematical accuracy all the time will be to complicated.

Actually in binary that is still 2. (0010 = 2, 0001 = 1, 0001+0001 = 0010 = 2).

Enough trolling guys.

Last warning. Any more will result in infractions.

I sharpened it to hair whittling sharpness and then did cutting 1/2" manila rope for 200 times measuring sharpness at certain steps. I am sure that for casual use - edcing difference will not be very seen, until you do a lot of cutting which require high sharpness - like leather work, cutting 100 page sketch book in half, things like this. Here ZDP-189 show what it is capable of.

Thanks, Vassili.

EDIT: As per Bastid post I'm removing my comments.

Vassili, do you think you might be able to test a folder in M4? Benchmade has a couple and Spyderco is coming out with one. I for one, would be real interested in your findings.....

I picked up a Delica 4 in ZDP just because I had to try it, it really impressed me!

I cut up about 5 cardboard boxed at work, as in like turned them into little cubes, not just a couple cuts, and the blade was still cleanly cutting paper. The factory edge wasn't "Shaving" sharp, but it was a good edge...So I took it home, went at it with my most aggressive stone, and started from scratch. Blade got "Shaving" and hair popping sharp...took it back to work. Cut up another 5 boxes, not shaving sharp, but cleanly cutting paper still. The cut 3 boxes with my S30V Crusader Forge, and a tin can in half becauase tha's what I do with that knife:D and it was SLIGHtLY more ragged.

Long story short, ZDP holds one hell of an edge, and that lil Delica already has won my heart.

Pics soon.

OH! Forgot one lil thing. The Delica is half serrated, because it's what they had and I wanted a little work knife anyway, as long as it wasn't full serrations, and I made it a point to only cut the boxes with the non serrated part...so it was only about 1 1/4" doing all the cutting:D:D:D

Sure, I have one limited edition from KnifeWorks - 710 CPM M4. I already tested Mule and it shows pretty good results.

Only problem is my wrist - I need to think about some safe way to do manila rope cutting.

Thanks, Vassili.

What steel was able to shave hair after 20 minutes of whittling pine? I like to try this myself.

Thanks, Vassili.

You asked, watch the video. there is your answer.
Yes, yes. Its only 5 min. but he is cutting a LOT harder
and a lot more wood than the light whittling I was doing that dulled and chipped my ZDP.

Yes, I know its not fair to compare ZDP with 1095.

I am personaly disappointed with the performance of my ZDP blade and
looking for answers. Bad heat treatment, poor whittiling skills, or maybe my expectations were too high for this "best" steel.

What do you thinK?
