what are the best cheap knives

Already been stated...

Ka-Bar Dozier Series. Various Victorinox and Wenger models. Inexpensive Kershaw knives. Buck Vantage and Bantam. Leatherman Crater. Opinels and Moras. Boker Magnum knives. Spyder Tenacious and Byrd Knives. Cold Steel Roach Belly and other 4116 Krupp offerings. CRKT.. And many, many more.

I think many of us understand your predicament.

+1 this is spot on

Save up 10 extra dollars and get an Izula, which can be had for like 40. I've got a RAT-1 and some other lower quality stuff and the izula beats them all.

What do you want the knife for? EDC? Camping? Hunting/Skinning? Yard work? Office work?
Fixed or Folder?

I've bought knives from Byrd, Kershaw, Boker, Spyderco, Victorinox, Opinel, Mora, Case, for <$30 and found them all to offer great values. Just depends on what you need/want/like in a knife.

Rough Ryder slipjoints. Good quality for the price and lots of neat patterns.

Sanrenmu 763. I got one of these and I'm totally surprised by how nice it is. My only complaint is that it's too small, but it's a great little knife for less than $10. I don't like cheap knives for the most part, but this one is really good for the money (unless you've got a China problem).

I would definitely start with either Spyderco Ambitious, Persistence, Tenacious or Resilience depending on what size you are looking for.

Victorinox, or a healthy helping of self control.

If you actually budget your money for the year you could probably get a Umnumzaan if you really wanted. You just have to be happy not buying anything for the rest of the year.

I suggest a library pass to go along with it.

Some that haven't been mentioned:

Gerber/Fiskars axes
Mora style knives from Hultafors, Finman, and Marttiini
All Tomahawks and Machetes from Cold Steel - also the Bushman, SF Shovel, Trail Boss etc.
Traditioal folders like the Okapi, Higonokami aka Japanese Carpenter's knife, Mercator K55K, Douk Douk, and Sodbusters from Case/Kissing Crane/Queen/Boker.
Tramontina Machetes
Anything from the Condor T&K line
Jeff White Trade knives (at the auction place)
Browning Ice Storm
