What are the worst quality knives you had priviledge to experience?

And yeah @marcinek and Mikael W Mikael W I can now see how it would happen.

When you cut something, cardborard or bottle for example - line should be straight, if if's eliptical - you're not doing it right.
So practicing the movement is beneficial.
And not only cutting performance won't be good, but you risk damaging the edge.
At least that is how my grandpa taught me.
But it's not hard to learn those simple movements.
And blade shape also plays role in a way how you might want to take that swing...

I might be wrong, but this works for me.

Your granpa was right and so was mine, those old men were certainly worth listening to.

Mikael

That's true. From lessons of how to tie knots to shooting practice and lessons on knives and sharpening... all this comes real handy in life.

And as 23yo I can sadly say that lots of guys of my age don't know these things...

You don't need to know "those things". Consider it "added value" that gives you "knowledge" and "power". If you're the only one... you know where this will end... There can be only one. I am the one, I want to be, of course.

You are right about that for sure. I'm doing my best to teach my 23 yo daughter the tricks, but it is her boyfriend that listens.
Rope, strings and knots are great! Can't be without them, so useful also in daily modern life.

I bought a original aluminum handled CRKT Home Front from the pawn shop for cheap, and it was a decent enough knife so I gave it to my Dad. Well a few weeks later the same shop sold me about 6 CRKT's for approx $10 each.
In the lot was a CRKT "Home Front Tactical" and it's the biggest piece of junk I've seen in a long time!

The handle is made from some kind of soft plastic and just feels cheap and very bendy. The steel is made out of one of those European steels that I have no idea what the numbers mean but knowing CKRT it's cheap. The lock up is questionable, and the MSRP is crazy!

The obvious lesson is there are bad knives out there and we used them and learned (hopefully), much to our disappointment, and do not use such knives, but what skills did such failures help you learn to do better with better knives? The result being a step on the learning curve, as each failure helps one learn.

Anything that says MADE IN PAKISTAN is absolutely dreadful in my experience, in fit, finish, materials, lock strength, ergonomics, blade geometry, EVERYTHING

I have had so many bad knives! But it lead me to be an experienced knife collector.I keep nothing in my collection now that I wouldnt rely on at work or in battle. Not all fury knives are bad.I have an 8 in. folder Ive had since 1992 its as good as my Spyderco delica I bought around the same time believe it or not I've never had to sharpen it and my spyderco has been sharpened many times. My worst knife was a barlow folder from the 1990s that broke the first week.Next was a SOG Machete that got bent up after cutting brush. It's funny because I have an old SOG seal knife I bought in the 90s that I dropped tip first in the concrete cracked the concrete woth no damage to the tip. They dont make them like that anymore. My newest seal pup I bought 5 yrs ago I gave avay because it dulled after a few cuts on paper.Dont hate too much on fury they all have their good and bad products. My favorite to date is a Kubey d2 folder it's just plain tough.Oh wait I almost forgot about my gerber multitool the knife blade broke cutting glue between 2 pieces of cardboard.

What's up with CRKT latley tho? They seem to be popular, but at other hand they really often seem to be overpriced POS from what I've read on here...
Gerber paraframe
As soon as I read Gerber I knew everything... Gerber Bear Grylls knives are being sold at gas stations here... and I've seen reviews:
Blade won't get sharp easily, but will get dull easily
Serations break off first time you use them
Handle is falling apart...
And it goes on and on...

Omg.my buddy bought a grylls folder like 7 years ago. It was so flimsy and wobbly with huge play, terrible craftsmanship and just all around garbage.

I laughed my butt off. It became a running gag after that.

The fact that bear promotes a cheap, chinese folder like THAT as survival gear is absolutely disgusting to me. Im sure he makes good money from it tho

I notice alot of sog knives use that AUS-8 stainless steel

I absolutely HATE that steel. Garbage.

Gave my seal pup and another sog folder away to friends long ago. They didnt own any knives, and I wanted to try and convert them without breaking my bank

Worked with one dude, as he bought cool knives after, but not the other guy

Well, I just started to think I might have some kind of aversion to stainless steel because of those garbage knives I had in the past... because it was written "Stainless steel" on them, and as a kid I thought that it's "WOW stainless"... then the knives were absolute junk no matter how much I wanted to think they're good, so I was kinda thinking "Maybe they're all like this?"

Then fast forwards, I needed a knife and wanted to buy a good one, ended up with Recon Tanto in carbon steel and at the end I was like "Woah, so that's what a knife should be?!"
I mean, at first I thought it sucks that I have to oil it and maintain it, but it wasn't that cheap, Cold Steel is a good name and everything, woman working there was praising that knife... I gave it a shot.
Then it held edge better than anything I had before, it was easier to sharpen too, didn't chip or bend or anything like that, so I was impressed by carbon steel.

So, when I read "Stainless steel" somewhere in the back of my head memories of those crappy knives pop up...

So congrats crappy chinese knife makers, you managed to traumatize me so bad that I have aversion towards stainless steel, despite the fact it's your fault for making crappy steel and giving it crappy heat treatment too...

CKRT's are overpriced garbage.I have had 3 over the years and not a single 1 could cut me out of a paper bag to save my life.I only get a few cuts before the edge is gone on any of them.Imacasa out of central america comes to mind as horrible.Let's talk cold steel I had a paraedge by them the edge would bend over cutting rope.At the same time my african made Kukri machete is a beast it takes a beating even cut through a fence by accident with it with no damage. Not sure the steel on it I dont believe it ever said on it anything but ,"made in South Africa".Any steel with a high chromium content is garbage in my opinion (over 15%).I am a big fan of D2 ,cpm s30v,cpm20cv,cpm440v,vg10,and for cheep steel 440c. I like cpm m4 when it's new but I hate trying to put a fine edge back on it.Think of a survival situation where you have sharpen on rocks and sticks. No SOGs or CRKT in my survival packs.

My meager knife collection consists of Chris Reeve and Hinderer right down the chain to a Chinese made, Swiss Army style knife with my name on the handle (My wife bought it for me from a souvenir shop). Almost every knife in my little collection means something to me. But sandwiched in my adored collection are a couple of 'Knives' that I think of as "bad genes", you know, the ones that you blame on your Uncle Earl's behavior. These knives have Pakistan blade steel or the blades are made of unbranded mystery metal. These are the knives that turn up in an old tool box or dusty cardboard box. I usually adopt them, clean them up, and give them a home out of passion for the hobby.

I know people rag on chinese knives but, man have they've improved over the years. Some of my best blades are chinese.I would put a kubey D2 against any american made D2 blade.I tested my Kubey D2 folder against one of my microtech otfs and it outcut the microtech by 14 cuts on rope. Both edges were profiled to a 20 degre edge.I also tested it against a Kershaw s30v it outcut that by 11 cuts. Its all in the heat treat.Back to crappy knives.I,ve had a couple swiss army knives that fell apart when using them.

That brings up some memories...
At my ex girlfriends house I opened wrong drawer once and it was full of small scissors, rusty nail clippers, rusty tweezers and it also had 2 or 3 broken swiss army knives...
Anyways you don't want to get cut by anything in that drawer...

AUS8 is just a steel standard. You can do it right or not. Well done, it's a really nice steel. From my basical use (but I have only top of the POPS knives !) I can rate it in the same park as RWL34, 12C27, N690, 1.4116 and AEB.L. But I might prefer AEB.L.

Ah ex girlfriends.Reminds me of a knife my ex gave me that the screws securing the blade were gone it was just glue holding the blade in place.I guess that 1 takes the cake for worst knife I've owned. As for aus8 well I am a believer that a good heat treat can make any steel good after all It is iron.I have heard a couple companies get 420 to a 60 rockwell.
