what are you packing?

Glock 20, 10mm and full power ammo. It'll kill a skunk with rabies or a hog with a bad attitude. Thugs too.

Nice loud signaling device, if needed.

When I go out and about I carry a Sig 220 doesnt matter if its to the store or out in the woods. when I go elk hunting I carry my ruger 454, thats for possible bear mishaps thou.

Those are good. I have a Taurus .38 'Total Titanium' snubby that's so light I forget it's on my belt sometimes. Nice quality, and a lot lighter than the similar S&W mod 640 I used to carry...

I am really happy with it, and it fits my outdoors needs to a "T". I had been carrying a Ruger in 40S&W, but found that it didn't perform to my standards as a woods gun, and since I want the same pistol on my hip camping, hiking, hunting, etc, I started looking for something else. I have a Super Blackhawk in .44Mag that I love, but it was too heavy for walking around with my Bow.

I have put 150-200rds through this thing in an afternoon, and had absolutely no problems with it. Weight is less than the .40, and it is the same caliber as my close woods levergun, so overall complimented things well. It has really turned out to be my favorite pistol.

Around here, I will not go into the woods without a pistol on my hip, and it is very rare to see people where I go without them. Besides 2 legged vermin, we have wolf, black bear, cougar, grizzly, & moose that can ruin your day.

When I trail run I carry a S&W Airweight .38. Any other time urbanly I carry a 1911 for self defense. If I'm hiking I carry the Airweight with a Ruger MK II for food gathering.

Ruger GP100 4" .357, stainless.

If moisture is not an issue I carry my 1911 .45. However, in western Washington moisture is usually an issue, about 50 inches per year worth.

I take my Taurus .22mag 8shot wheel gun...it's small, stainless, 8shots and .22mag revolver, and just plain cool.

Ruger sp101 in .357magnam loaded with 5 rounds of 158gr. JHPs & an MTM 18 round ammo wallet, with JHPs, cast bullets & shot shells! the 3inch heavy bbl. shoots very well!

I usually always have some weapon in my truck whether it be a muzzloader, crossbow, shotgun or rifle (something to hunt all year) but if I'm spending some leisure time in the woods, I'll carry my Springfield 1911 45. These days not much leisure time anymore. Most of my time is in front of the belt grinder.

I carry a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 when in the piggy hills of central west california and the same rig in idaho and nevada actually thats my trusty friend and take her pretty much everywhere. I know its heavy, its a cannon but dang it I am a stout dude and don't mind the weight. When I am hiking in a place where I can only carry a knife I used to pack a BK9 but that has been replaced with a bowie of Siegle design.

I'm grateful that I can carry open or concealed. Usually a GP100 .357 mag when considering both 2 and 4 legged critters (out in the woods). I only have to worry about a max size of black bear, no grizzlies or polar bears here. If I'm only concerned about 2 legged critters, it's either the GP or a 1911 in .45 acp. I'm pretty comfortable with either one.

When I'm in the truly wild and like to practice, my .454 Casull comes along for the fun. :D

Good thread I've been thinking about this subject a bit lately. Where I do the majority of my woods time it is legal to have a firearm so I usually always bring one. In years past it was a S&W .357 but I sold it so I started bringing my Para P14 with a spare mag. Now I'm thinking a stainless 4-6" .357 again or .44 mag but I haven't found the right one yet.

I was a die hard Smith fan for years even as a kid, I packed a nickel 4" Lew Horton Custom Model 29 with a K frame round butt conversion. Then an Anaconda and finally I have my Ruger Super Redhawk, I lighten up the springs and its a peach. If I were going with a 357 I would not hesitate to pick up a Stainless GP 100 with a 6" tube. ;)

Oh yeah and I have to say that I hate California in this thread as no matter where I go I cannot pack legally. Unless on BLM land or my own property unless something has changed.

Its rare that I pack in the woods, but the few times I have, its been a Beretta 92 f/s Centurion. Once I tried carrying a Desert Eagle as I planned to hunt with it that year, until i figured out that carrying around a 9+ pound firearm on your side tires you out faster than a rifle does. lol.

AMEN! Preach it brother!:)

The Chef, you'll appreciate this. One good thing about the .454 round is that it self-enforces proper grip and technique. I wasn't paying attention the first shot, and it drew blood. After that, I paid attention. It has a way of getting your attention, and everyone else's too! :D

A G-20 gives me Power, Capacity, Concealability and Ruggedness in one fairly small package.

While my main concern is people, the area frequent also has black bears, so I want something that'll do the job.

I carry 180 Grain Gold Dot JHP's @ 1350 fps.
