what are you packing?

Dinner getters can be pressed into defense in a pinch, there is not much squirrel left to eat when a 357 125gr JHP hits it.:D

But you can load a 357 or 44 with snake shot, and get dinner. I have a little pocket pistol in .22LR & .22Mag that can also be used very effective with snake shot for grouse and squirrel.

You must get awful close to those squirrels and grouse, down here in NC I don't think you could even make a squirrel run with ratshot, much less jump in your frying pan. Chris

Yeah, the ones here hang over your head and scream at you if you sit down in the forest. The only legal ones to hunt don't hang out in the woods, so the ones in the woods are pretty comfortable running up to you and giving you a piece of their mind.

The grouse, we call them stupid chickens. Season opens up with big game, and stays open through the big game seasons. Traditional camp fare, and there are very few restrictions on means take. Centerfire rifle is even legal on them. I have seen guys shoot at them in a tree, trying to make a headshot, miss, and the grouse just puffs itself up and sits there. My brother, who is not a very good pistol shot emptied a 9mm at one before I got the 22 and popped it in the back of the head.

I have walked through a group of about 1/2dozen coming back to camp, didn't need them for food, and was tired so I didn't kill any, but they moved to about 1-2 ft away as I walked through the middle of them.

I'll pack what ever seems like a good fit, depending upon the season, weather, and how serious I am about handgun hunting. I might just be out for a stroll. Beretta 92FS 9MM with hollowpoints is one of my favorite all around packing guns. I used to carry a SW .38 or .357, 4" revolver, but this 9MM is the about the same size and holds 15 rounds, so I don't need to carry a speed loader, or have spare shells in my pocket. If I'm in deep woods during deer/bear season, I pack my Ruger .41 Mag Blackhawk, 4 5/8". My Ruger .22 Mag is nice as well, for small game/defense from wild dogs/boogymen, etc. The .22 Mag is underated big time IMHO. I also pack my Grandfather's old SW 39-2 9MM when I'm out loafing around.

What the hell do you mean "old". And what is this crap about it being your grandfathers. :D :D I remember when the 39 was introduced. I can't possibly be that old.

Well, "old" to me...LOL! I was born in 68, and he bought the gun new in 1974. It is mine now, and a GREAT "old" gun at that. I wish SW put that quality/care in to a gun now for less than $500.00, but unless you get the 3913TSW (I own this as well),... they don't make like that anymore.
