what are you packing?

A G-20 gives me Power, Capacity, Concealability and Ruggedness in one fairly small package.

While my main concern is people, the area frequent also has black bears, so I want something that'll do the job.

I carry 180 Grain Gold Dot JHP's @ 1350 fps.

I had my G20's grip chopped down to where it will accept G29 magazines. This makes it a bit more compact for carry, either concealed or in a pack, and it allows me to use either full-sized mags or the shorter G29 mags. It is my choice if backpacking in black bear country. It does bring with it a certain.... authority in an auto.

:) :) :)

Razorback- What part of Maryland are you in?

I live in the rural part of Northern Harford county right on the Mason-Dixon line.
sodak, ever shoot any of JD Jones handcannon calibers? I have a 358JDJ. It's based on the necked down 444 Marlin to 35 cal. I shoot it out of a TC Contender.

Wow. No, I've never shot one. The Casull is about my limit for recoil. I draw the line at handguns that hurt the same at both ends! :D

I do have a muzzle break on the TC and man is it loud. Here is my Springfield 1911 A-1. I had to put it with one of my Tuskers.:D They just seem to go together.

Biggest handgun I ever fired was a guy I knew that had taken an Remington xp100 action and built it to accept the 458 Win Mag. Fired it at a silhouette match in CT back in the late 70's. Ka-freaking-boom. Big noise, big recoil. I latter learned he actually re-chambered it in 460 Weatherby mag. Never fired that or saw it fired. I do know that the silhouette match operators told him he wasn’t allowed to shoot it at the steel targets anymore. He was damaging the rams badly at 200 meters and I won’t even mention what he was doing to the closer targets. The biggest (in terms of K.E.) I ever owned was the 30 cal Herret as wildcat. Reduced 30-30 brass fire formed and resized and trimmed. As much KE at 100 yards as the .44 has at the muzzle. And of course the venerable Super Blackhawk in 44mag. I have just started shooting again with my boys now that they can enjoy using big bore. Now, I have to start reloading again so I can afford to shot the stuff. Still haven't fired the 30 cal Herret yet since I started shooting again. Nothing loaded and don’t have my presses set up. Always wanted to fire the Casull. Would also like to fire the 460 and the 500. I am considering buying a 500 but would really like to test drive one first. I always hated the way the large frame smiths, like the N frame 44 used to beat the heck out of the web of my hand with its recoil. I can only imagine that the 460 and 500 are worse. Don't know how much difference the muzzle brake makes. You guys probably know, but I will mention that the .30 Herret is a TC barrel.

The Chef, you'll appreciate this. One good thing about the .454 round is that it self-enforces proper grip and technique. I wasn't paying attention the first shot, and it drew blood. After that, I paid attention. It has a way of getting your attention, and everyone else's too! :D

Now I have to post a picture, that is a funny thing because I changed to Hogues after getting snakebit by the stock grips. And I have to resight her in after putting a 100 rounds through this past weekend. God I am a recoil whore! :D

How can I get one of those Tuskers?! What is the metal on it? How long s the blade?

That is a nice knife!

Well, I'm currently packing an M4 with CCO and a M9 in a Galco Jackass shoulder rig...of course we have a .50 cal on the up-armored 1114:D

Back in the states when backpacking/bushwacking I typcially carry my Kimber .45 Ultra Carry or my Para Ordnance P-12.45. I'm currently stationed in Texas, so not many big, bad critters, but when hunting in bear country, I'll carry along my Ruger Redhawk in .44 (the 5.5" bbl flavor).

I'm looking at trying out Charter Arms .44 SPL snubby and even Taurus' little Model 94 .22 (with 2" bbl) for either a lightweight .22 or larger bore wheel gun options.

I was a die hard Smith fan for years even as a kid, I packed a nickel 4" Lew Horton Custom Model 29 with a K frame round butt conversion. Then an Anaconda and finally I have my Ruger Super Redhawk, I lighten up the springs and its a peach. If I were going with a 357 I would not hesitate to pick up a Stainless GP 100 with a 6" tube. ;)

Yep, those Rugers are nice and they have been on the mind.

Thanks

Open carry in the boonies=4" Ruger GP-100 stainless.
Concealed carry in the boonies=3" Ruger SP-101

Concealed carry in "civilization" Springfield 4" Champion 1911A1 refinished in NP-3 by Robar.

I like the better penetration and flatter shooting of the .357 in the woods. Not having to rely on the magazine to function is nice also.

I carry a Ruger 22/45 with a Tactical Solutions upper. It is very light and very accurate, I carry it mostly for hunting and recreational shooting but it could be pressed into service for self defense if I had too. It is the pistol on the bottom, and yes it is nicknamed the purple monster. Chris

I just checked out Tactical Solutions on the web. Wow! It makes me want to buy an old Ruger just to get the grip and then add a 6" barrel.

What kinds of groups are you getting and with what ammo? Did you do anything to the trigger?

Thanks!

With a 6x scope, Eley EPS and a good rest 1 hole 5 shot groups at 25 yds are easy, off hand with irons they open up somewhat but still minute of squirrel. The trigger was worked by Mike Chudamelca (sp) at All Custom Firearms in Sierra Vista AZ. Head shots on rabbits and squirrels most of the time, all in all the best woods running gun I have ever had or seen. It is very light yet balances and hangs well with the 8" barrel, I don't think I would want a shorter one. Did I mention that I really like this pistol.:o

I usually carry my gerber and my daisy pump action for close encounters. there is nary a bird in my parents backyard that has not fealt the wrath of my daisy gun.;

Hey Boats, if it wouldn't be much trouble could you tell me the length from the firing pin to the end of the muzzle on your 4" GP-100?

The reason I ask is because if it all totals 5.5" I could technically use one as a hunting handgun also.

Happy Holidays
