What are you watching & why? (splain)

You and I, sir, need to have a (few) drink(s). I'd LOVE to hear this story.
Okay, you're buying... ☺️ 🍻

Here's a portion to whet your appetite...it doesn't get into the Cuban connection, or the local police / federal corruption...but it lays out where we started and what we found out. (I was unaware of the 60 Minutes story...and only happened to see it when it aired. No one thought to bring it to my attention before it aired...and the case was still ongoing to some degree.)

Anyway...

Yup. Same crap, different decade. I was but a youngin' when this was taking place, but... certainly comes out the same playbook. Thanks for bringing my attention to this, I was unaware. Down another rabbit hole I go...

I can't wait to hear the stories when we have a chance to I grab some beers in person some day!

If you have Apple+, "Bad Sisters" is worth a watch. Excellent cast, likable characters, (at least most of 'em), and a fun ride.

10 episodes in the first season. (And it comes to a conclusion rather than stringing you along to wait for the following season.)

We enjoyed it.

Watched the first 3 Wick movies with the kids this week and finally watched 4 last night.

Incredible home theater experience. Love the visuals, action pieces and the sound was amazing. Bass was just about perfect.

The downside is that I found it to be the worst of the 3 movies. The series has veered more and more towards outright fantasy and videogame aesthetics like the sunrise scenes. My only other major gripe is the canine CGI. It just looked out of place.

I can see why a fair number of people like the first movie, but aren't fans of the sequels.

You're right about the direction. I'd say it's kind of along the lines of the Fast and Furious movies; as the series progressed and they continually tried to one-up the movies before it, they just became more and more outlandish.

That said, I still find all of them entertaining for "shut your brain off" popcorn action-thrillers.

I also noticed a difference in the directing and visuals between the first movie, and the sequels. The first movie had a darker, more subdued tone, with a more subdued color palette.

While they're all mostly filmed at night, the sequels appear to progressively have been filmed to take advantage of 4k HDR specs, especially JW:C4, filmed on the Arri Alexa LF and Alexa Mini cameras.

On 4k OLED, they're visually stunning spectacles, with the stark contrast of inky blacks, and the specular highlights of all the neon and lights in the background and foreground, with vibrant colors quite noticeably beyond the rec.709 color gamut (apologies. Tech nut here, that made the mistake of jumping down the HT audio and video calibration hole a couple decades ago).

That sunrise (sunset?) backed interview scene with the Manager, concierge and main villain, looked stunning in HDR on OLED. I kept thinking, "Wow... it was simply impossible to reproduce an image with such contrast with any realism, even a decade ago..."

Looks like I'll be asking here when I go to buy a new TV

Watched 'Extraction 2" last night. If you can suspend your belief in reality, the action scenes make John Wick seem pretty tame in comparison. I found bourbon and cold meds took it up a notch. 😊

I really enjoyed both Extraction films. I'd even say that as fun as the John Wick movies are, the Extraction flicks set a pretty high bar for what makes a highly entertaining, yet gritty action movie. I know Chris Hemsworth is taking a bit of a step back from acting but I hope that we'll see him again in future installments.

Just started a Korean series on Netflix called bloodhounds

This is the description

"Two young boxers band together with a benevolent moneylender to take down a ruthless loan shark who preys on the financially desperate"

I'll see if it's worth watching

- Rewatched GoT in its entirety, S1 - S8 during these past couple of weeks. This is the first time that I have rewatched all episodes and all seasons in one go after it ended in 2019 with its weak S8, specially the finale. IMO, the whole storyline flowed better (I am talking of the TV series as opposed to the books, because I never read the books) when I watched the whole thing without the 1-2 year break between the seasons, from beginning to the end. I am still not disputing the majority sentiment that it was rushed leaving quite a few gaps as it ended but I am saying that having been removed from S8 for quite a few years, I found this experience more acceptable and much more enjoyable.

- Silo (Apple TV+): got reeled in by the free episode and then renewed my $6.99 subscription which is what I typically do with AppleTV+ as I binge watch this streamer sporadically. Silo has good ratings and does well on Rotten Tomatoes. I find it interesting and enjoyable and recommend it if you can stomach another dystopian sci-fi genre series with mostly average or below average looking folks in the background who wear the sh*ttiest clothes who live in very dreary and drab looking environments! Some of the middle episodes drag on and on as they try to establish characters arcs but IMO they overdo it by overstretching. I would still recommend Silo as it does get stronger and better in its last 3-4 episodes (10 episode series) once it leaves its meandering sidetracking stories behind. The books which it is based on also seems to be quite highly recommended for this kind of genre making AppleTV+ to renew Silo at least for another season. IMO it is one of the better sci-fi series currently on AppleTV+ after Severance.

Currently watching "Barry" on HBO Max. As of now it's tolerable, which is better than 90% of what's out there... but I can imagine tiring of it before long.

These days whatever I watch has to have a certain vibe to it and the moment the plot becomes annoying in a frustrating way I tend to drop off. That said, I watched "Hello Ladies" with Stephen Merchant (co-writer of the original The Office) and it was such an effective cringe comedy I had to turn it off, but not in a bad way lol. Just one of those shows that's so embarassing it simultaneously makes you laugh and your skin crawl at the same time... a bit like David Brent from The Office UK.
