I can see why a fair number of people like the first movie, but aren't fans of the sequels.
You're right about the direction. I'd say it's kind of along the lines of the Fast and Furious movies; as the series progressed and they continually tried to one-up the movies before it, they just became more and more outlandish.
That said, I still find all of them entertaining for "shut your brain off" popcorn action-thrillers.
I also noticed a difference in the directing and visuals between the first movie, and the sequels. The first movie had a darker, more subdued tone, with a more subdued color palette.
While they're all mostly filmed at night, the sequels appear to progressively have been filmed to take advantage of 4k HDR specs, especially JW:C4, filmed on the Arri Alexa LF and Alexa Mini cameras.
On 4k OLED, they're visually stunning spectacles, with the stark contrast of inky blacks, and the specular highlights of all the neon and lights in the background and foreground, with vibrant colors quite noticeably beyond the rec.709 color gamut (apologies. Tech nut here, that made the mistake of jumping down the HT audio and video calibration hole a couple decades ago).
That sunrise (sunset?) backed interview scene with the Manager, concierge and main villain, looked stunning in HDR on OLED. I kept thinking, "Wow... it was simply impossible to reproduce an image with such contrast with any realism, even a decade ago..."
