What are you watching & why? (splain)

1923 S2 was like a train wreck that I could not look away from and true to form, the story's finale tonight was a simpleton's (I am that simpleton) delight!

Spoiler alert: it has ended and I am sure that Sheridan is working on the next prequel to his cash cow Yellowstone (I read 1944) but the fact that the SOB had the audacity to rip off the ending of Titanic was just really ballsy! James Cameron ought to sue him 🤣

I watched the more recent Three Musketeer movies - Part I: D'Artagnan and Part II: Milady. French films that star Eva Green and Vincent Cassel (big fans of both).

I was a big fan of Dumas's works growing up and most movie efforts surrounding the Musketeers have been disappointing in some respect or another, although usually still entertaining. These latest films did a good job at capturing the whimsical swashbuckling banter and highlighting more of the political/religious intrigues of the time. It was also great to watch it in French, feels far more appropriate. Lots of liberties taken still but I did not regret watching them.

On a different note, I also watched 1992. It's about a heist being done during the LA riots. I think it was Ray Liotta's last film. Definitely not a "feel good" movie, but it wasn't bad. I probably won't watch it again.

I need to add those to the list. Eva Green = 😍

Started watching "the rookie" series on Hulu. It's decent. Nothing to get overly excited about and it requires a fair amount of willingness to suspend disbelief, but it's kinda fun to watch.

Tried watching 1923..... couldn't even make it through the first season. Sex scenes add nothing and slow everything down in a show.

The show just felt lazy. When you have to stack up truck loads of "coincidences" to cause a crisis/drama to make your story interesting, it just comes off as poorly written to me. I'm out.

Most movies these days just suck. Writers are out of ideas and their creativity is strangled by their need to virtue signal.

Not trying to be negative, just my perspective.

She won't disappoint.

I partially agree. I have a slightly different take though. I think we are programmed these days to be hyper aware of "virtue signaling", "wokeness", or whatever label you want to apply (for better or worse), whether it's intended in a film or not. I think it leads to an artificial skewing of one's overall impression of a film if they pick up on even the subtlest things and end up being dismissive or accepting of the movie because we're programmed to either shun or laud such things.

I don't think it inappropriate for cinema to be used as a vehicle to promote certain social justice issues. After all, the arts have a very, very long history of doing just that. Historically though, we've had the capacity to be entertained, regardless of the underlying messages. I think society's issue is two-fold - 1.) per your point, the industry has lost its capacity to entertain, while still presenting their message and 2.) we've lost our ability to be entertained.

That's why I think we need to make a solid come-back to the types of movies of the 80s and 90s - short (by today's standard), simple, and straightforward action, comedy, romance, etc. That's why I think movies like The Beekeeper and the new one, A Working Man are going to continue to prove popular. Ridiculous and entertaining, without making us overwork our psyches trying to find out the hidden messages and deciding if we should be outraged or not.

Watched 1988’s Willow, in honor of Val Kilmer’s passing.

Never occurred to me, back then, but I can’t really think of any other movie that had as many people with dwarfism, in the cast.

It struck me as a little funny that not a single person with dwarfism was cast in the LOTR and Hobbit movie series, as hobbits or dwarves.

Time Bandits, my dude!

Just watched the last episode season 5 Sopranos. One season to go.

Used to be, movies had heroes. Now, we demand anti heroes. Why is that?

As an update...after a fast and attention grabbing start, like most other shows that bog down because they have to contain a certain number of episodes..."Dope Thief" has lost a good deal of its steam. I think there are a couple of episodes remaining...whether for the season or the mini-series, I am not certain.

It's still worth the watch, but, I'm a little let down at this point.

In this respect, films are superior...unless a show really has staying power, which fewer seem to have, IMHO.

Easier to make a good preview than a good movie, easier to make a good movie than a good series.

What's the saying? Something like, "the preview is the movie Hollywood wished they had made".
