What Buck are you carrying today?

Beautiful knife! What is a "no dot"?
M Midnight Rider "no dot" is a reference to the age of this particular knife. In this case, it's an early '70's era knife.

Buck has a page with more info.

There's also a sticky on this forum with some data on the 110/112. Additionally, I think someone made a webpage devoted to the 110 that I've seen linked here a couple times, but can't find at the moment. You'll have to do some digging, but it'll be fun if you like 110's.

Thank you for taking a moment to answer my "newb" question. There's a lot to learn, I will definitely check it out.

Among the ongoing debates within the Buck community is, which is the best larger Stockman patterned knife, the 301 (made in USA) or 371 (made in China). One man’s opinion: I like them both! To me, the 301 has superior steel (420HC) and a better edge grind, whereas the 371 has slightly better fit and finish and is cheaper. Carrying both today.

Note the 301 is on the RIGHT. -EDIT

I'm always inclined to vote for the U.S.A. made 300 series. Particularly the Black Sawcut models. Not because of where they're made but because of how they're built.

The liner, the bolsters, and the shield are all the same piece of steel. Anyone worried about the shield coming unglued and falling off can stop worrying about it.

The handles aren't going to come loose either. The Black Sawcut handles start out with "posts" on the backside. They stick those posts through the holes in the liner. Then they melt the posts and sand them smooth. Those little ridges inside the circles in the liners "lock" the handle slabs in place after they are melted. This is why you don't see handle pins (or rivets as Buck likes to call them) on the Black Sawcut models. They aren't necessary with this type of construction.

I have never taken apart an offshore Buck knife so I can't speak for the construction of those. Perhaps the liner, bolsters, and shield are an integral piece on those as well.

Just a friendly observation, the 301 in your picture is on the right, not the left. :)
