What CAN I carry in NYC?

taken from another thread here is the confirmed answer
It would be best to keep it inside your pocket. I had lunch yeaterday with a Deputy Chief of the NYPD ( and old friend and former co worker), and after complaining about women, taxes and all else, I talked knife law with him. He made it clear there was a zero tolerance for any knife carry and officers are told to make an arrest without many exceptions. I discussed the construction workers arrests, and he clearly understood why they happened and felt the officers were following their instrcutions. The one other guy with us at lunch is a building manager who had a leather man on his belt under his suit jacket. He asked the Chief if that was illegal to carry that way and the responses was there some officers that would arrest you....When it comes to knives I would stay away from carrying one in NYC. I had invited him out to lunch to celebrate his second marriage, so I was treating, but I asked him if he knew the one and only time a non LEO could carry a switchblade or gravity knife and bet him the costs of lunch...He had no clue about the fishing/hunting/tracking exception. I still paid for lunch, but my point is the NYPD stops reading section 265.20 of the PL right after they understand they can carry what they want. They do not read what you can legally do, and they don't seems to care....Things have changed since my day for sure...

How about carrying them during camping trip outside of NYC but in NYS? So carrying them in car while travelling through NYC and taking them out during camping.

I was wondering about carrying something like Rajah II (6" blade, 13" overall length of folder)

and, something like Cold Steel shovel (9" blade, 21" overall length of shovel)

According to how the law is worded, you are ok because you are camping. I carry a few of my many knives (folders and fixed) when I go camping, fishing and hunting. I am always in possession of my hunting/fishing licenses, so I can't imagine having a problem. If you search my vehicle, you will clearly see my camo clothing, sleeping bags, etc. Also, the knives are locked in a box in the back of my truck. So I can't imagine having an issue under these circumstances. However, I wouldn't want to get caught with that Rajah in Central Park even if you do have a fishing license. By the way, great knife to have on a boat while deep see fishing!

Let me also say that a NYC retired LEO friend of mine said that he would have locked someone up if he caught them with an Opinel!

Don't the officers of NYC have to take an oath similar to this?

"I, (state name) do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of (insert state). I will faithfully discharge my duties of police officer of the (insert name) police department to the best of my ability. So help me God."

I sure did. I can sympathize with the officers who are assigned to a dangerous part of the community, but that does NOT relieve them of the responsibility of their oath.

and what is your point other than to start an argument? try talking to tom19176 or look at the knife laws forum.. Your post has nothing to do with the thread starters question and is off topic at best.. its apparent you like to disscuss and argue about knife laws you post in several other forums about the same subject like here http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44116 either make a thread in the knife laws forum under your own title or stick to your other forums like i said your post has nothing to do with the topic and it will not be answered. I suggest you PM tom19176 with your questions..
