So my understanding is that freedom of speech does not apply in BF with regards to discussing Chinese products, but any other country is OK? Or are there any other countries or regions that are banned?

I believe that it's every country. But I think that they try to roll too much into politics. It's nearly as ubiquitous as bushcraft.

Nah, otherwise me and twenty other members would be gone. China is one of those topics where you have people discussing true and valid reasons not to buy from there, and sometimes you'll get some guy going "Yeah, eff ALL them Foreignese people", getting too away from knives, getting xenophobic...

Folks are allowed to say the fact that, hey, there's genocide there, I don't wanna buy a knife from anywhere like that. Hey, there's religious persecution camps, I cannot give my money to that place in good conscience. Basically, is the statement related at all to the purchase of knives, is it free of race based bigotry, have you been speaking in good faith and not hammering people? Well, you probably good with the mods. Just look at this topic in previous iterations, no forced "pro China or shut it" policy is in place.

You can absolutely share your distaste for their knives, just be reasonable and all.
China is not banned, outright discussion of politics is. Not the mention of anything political, heck, blades are political now.

I think you'll find this a cool place if you juBANNED FOR BADMOUTHING CHINA - MODS

I'm all for supporting U.S. businesses, but in terms of boycotting other countries ... I don't necessarily buy into the notion that buying a product from a small company is supporting the government of the country where that company is based. For all I know, that small company in China or Russia or wherever may hate the ruling party. Or more likely, they're just people trying to make a living, like everyone else.

It's a privately owned forum...freedom of speech doesn't apply. Per the site rules, politics is restricted to the political sub-forum, which requires a paid membership to access.

What is a “China-Mod”?

That is what sucks about it, the average Chinese guy working at a good knife co, like WE, Kizer, Ruike, whatever, has to suffer because of the country's policy. WE still has to kick up that sweet sweet cash to the government, and then it matters not whether the citizens are just like us.

To clarify, would have no problem buying a knife made by a Chinese person not in China. I am sure many of my Taiwanese knives are made by, or have factories run by, ethnic Chinese folks who are of a different nationality, and that is cool with me.

Freedom of speech means that the government cannot prevent you from voicing your thoughts or ideas. BFC is a privately owned entity that can set whatever rules Spark deems fit for his business. In all honesty, there is a LOT of things that are allowed to be said on these boards that would get scrubbed/banned on others.

China is a hotbutton topic simply because the policies and ethics of the COUNTRY run against many of the US's. It's very tough to tease out product from the policy. I certainly understand why someone would try to avoid buying a product from China, but I find it personally to a baby/bathwater thing.

In short, I believe this thread was started in order to try and divorce the typical political dust up of the topic and help navigate the clinical question of what companies put out good products ethically (to the best of our knowledge) so that one can buy on the merits of the knife/company alone without down the Chinese governmental policy rabbit hole.

In all honesty, these threads always end up with commentators outside of the scope, which is fine. This is a place to share ideas. The only issue I take with it is that it derails the topic. It's like those threads on gun boards:

"I'm wanting to get a revolver for carry. Should I go with a lightweight. 38 special J frame or step up to a 6 shot .357? I really like the simplicity of a revolver and tend to shoot them better than a semiautomatic."

"Glock 20...nuff said*"

*full disclosure, I carry a Glock 😉

Like it or not, we live in a global economy. As with anything, there will be gems and junk.
Its impossible, to throw a blanket over one country’s products as inferior.
Chances are, the most politically correct purchase has tentacles to…you might be suprised.

If you really go down that hole, it’s easy to get lost pretty quickly. Economies are so deeply intertwined that you could make a career out of trying to figure out what a “real” product of X country is. (There have been some examples lately, IIRC … like “maybe our screws come from there or our machinery comes from there, but it’s almost totally completely American.”) Ownership is another one … we often have no idea who really owns a company or what happens to the money made.

Unfortunately, we’re stuck having to really study and do the best we can. Part of why I appreciated OP’s question … avoiding known bads is a step in the right direction. (True for products of any country.)
