Here is something different. I got this old hand forged socketed hook and liked it enough to keep it. I have no use for it, but it's going on the wall. The handle is a $6 cut down handle from the hardware store. It looks like ash. The drawknife came in handy for fitting this one. Total length is 5.5 feet on a 4.5 foot handle. I guessed on the length but it's not terribly important for me. Total weight it 2lb 6oz! I'll probably pin it at some point, but it is very tight as is.

Nice piece! What would it have been used for?

Good question. I wonder if FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades might have an idea?

Probably for pruning work on things like blackberry canes or grape vines or for cutting back tall bushes. Something with lithe woody growth that you'd need some reach to cut effectively.

It's a sickle, probably for grain.

Nope. Not a grain sickle. The form is entirely incorrect and the socket and its length are inconsistent with such use. More likely a smaller version of a tool akin to a French "croissant" slasher made for similar--but lighter--work.

The socket indicates that it was intended for use on a long handle. Different context of use.
