What did you rehang today?

I just recieved a spotted gum haft all the way from Australia 2 days ago in fact! Along with another Plumb tassie and a Brades hatchet. I traded a couple things with a gentleman over there. I am really surprised at the weight of the gum. Easily outweighs hickory. Seems to be a solid and strong wood. I can't wait to hang it and try it out. I think it's going to vibrate a lot but that's just a hunch. The swell isn't wide but it's tall and there's plenty to hook your fingers in. The haft is a Kruger's brand. 32" is the length most tassies came on and I hear that's about all you can get in AUS. 32" is a great length in my opinion.

No evidence of green paint on either. They are identical axes except one is stamped 45 for the weight and the other 42. The guy I traded with told me they came on 32" helves normally. I have to say I'm smitten with them! My connies are getting jealous! Hahaha
Did yours come from Australia?
Mine feels so good and I have about the same combination with a couple connies. The bad thing is I can't bring myself to file the damn thing up and use it. I need to get over it or sell it I guess. In the mean time I would like to find a head to hang.

Yeah I only have 1 hickory handle but the spotted gum seems more dense, I wonder if it is stronger?

Yeah im the same I hate getting started on the edge. I can't wait to get my keesteel hung on a 32"

Sorry for another post but I have a Tassie marked made in USA, and I have been told it's a Plumb Champion but the other side is too pitted. What does everyone else think?

I wasn't able to find the stamp on any other Plumbs so may be right

You lucky dog.... I mean that in the nicest way of course..:D That's a gorgeous axe! Very nice man. In great shape too. If you ever want to sell that PLEASE let me know. Or we could trade etc.
Even though it's got a lot of pitting it's light pitting. Nothing to worry about in the least.

Yeah both the plumb and the haft came from Australia. I traded with the guy. Nice chap!

To be fair I would be open to selling many of my Tassies. I don't get to use them too often so I don't need more than a few and I would rather send them to a good home where they will be more appreciated.

I'm on school holidays at the moment too so I don't have work for a few weeks and I guess it means I would be able to get some more handles. Although I love collecting them, a hung axes is more useful to me than a few heads

Keep in mind the other side is a bit more pitted but if cleaned up a little it would still make a great axe. Feel free to send me a PM or I will work it out when I get home and send through some photos

Yes let's get in contact! I'm hitting the sack but I'll PM you tomorrow evening about it. Thanks! I've been after a plumb champion for awhile!

Damn fine job on that did you shape the handle yourself? I’ve had my eyes peeled for a sing song logo for a while now.
Thank you! Nope, it came with the axe. I bought it for the handle. But once Mr. Rust advised me I could save the head, they went back together again. I just scraped the paint off, removed the metal wedges and rehung it.

Howdy everyone! I've been lurking for awhile, finally decided to get a membership and hop on board. I've thoroughly enjoyed going through most of the main threads in the Axe/hatchet forum, you guys all do some great work and have some beautiful axes! Thank you for sharing your tips, as it has helped me along my way greatly! Here are a couple I've finished up over the weekend. They are my firsts, so don't laugh! Or do I don't care! The Tommy axe was a mess when I got it, toe was badly worn, small chips. Outside of the hang being slightly crooked, (used a House Handle scout 14" clearance handle, culprit of some of the crookedness) I'm happy with it for a user. I filed the bit with a Simonds Nu-cut, and finished up to 1,000 grit paper. The Norlund was my first find that got my into this game. Cheesy/cliche I know. It's on the original handle from what I can tell, and it soaked up the BLO wonderfully. Only had to hone the bit with a puck. Hopefully my images show up, this will be my first time trying to post pictures. Sorry for the book!

Well done man and welcome aboard! They look darn good especially for firsts!

Finally finished this project this morning. It was on a hatchet length haft when I got it. Pretty rusty. I don't have a scale yet, I'd say it's 2 lb head. Gave it an Evaporust bath, sanded with some Emory cloth. Radial grind on bit finished with a puck. The total length of haft is 27" as it sits. The balance is great. Haft had a factory varnish and OLD Home Depot? Sticker on it when I got it with a different head on it. Had a gap in the front, I used a piece of red oak dowel to fill it. Poplar wedge. Hang is slightly closed, and I love the finished product. This thing feels great to handle. I immediately took it out to chop some dead stuff down. Enjoy! Comments welcome! This is my second finished hang.

Feels good to swing a newly hung axe, doesn't it?

Feels great SP! Most of my time swinging was behind a splitting maul when I was about 15-16. I'm 30 now. Use to go with my old man and his buddy to go collect 18ft car trailer load after load of wood, start to finish, hand split it all, to give to some folks/friends in the local trailer park that majority of them heated with wood. We get some brutal temps with wind chill here in Iowa, believe it or not. It's been a number of years since then, and compared to the maul, swinging an axe is exhilarating! I plan to eventually heat with wood myself, can't wait! By the way thanks for all the info you share, I've learned a good deal from reading through your posts, along with many others. Glad to be apart of the community.
