What did you rehang today?

Rockman- those are fine looking hatchets! Both are very well done, that Plumb is a looker.

I had wondered what an octagonalized HH hatchet handle would look like.
Very good I see.

Put this in the photo thread but figured I would put it here too... Here's a Collins double bit and carpenter hatchet (garage sale finds) I just got finished hanging for a friend, stained both handles to match. They were rusted pretty badly but cleaned up great with the wire wheel on my bench grinder.

I was surprised at how well the stain turned out. The octagon handles feel good in hand, I'm looking forward to sharpening both and trying them out.

Nice work! Your friend should be pleased with the pair.

Very nice! Those are handsome. I like the octagonal ridge that you have lighter than the rest.

Thanks Agent H. When I originally stained them a couple of the ridges didn't take the stain. I liked the look so I went back and sanded all ridges. Then hit them with a light coat of blo.

SCT100- Those are great! The grind on the Jersey makes it look like she wants to eat. The boy's axe, I like how the shoulder disappears into the eye, very clean looking. I have a Craftsman boy's axe that needs re-wedging/seating, going to try to re-use the original handle. Thanks for the motivation.

Happy to help with others' axe addictions! Haha! And thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the Council should be a serious wood cutter now! And I wish I could take credit for the way the Craftsman came out, but the handle was actually decently shaped to begin with, and onlt required some tweaking on my end, but I did make sure to seat it low to help in that area.

The Craftsman hatchet is a refinish (never seen that shape before!) and the hammers are rehangs. A 2lb Warwood sledge, a Pexto 20oz ballpein and a Made in Germany planishing hammer (are those hardened?). They are all superb, but the German hammer is the star. All of the rehangs handles are NOS or repurposed old handles. Sanded, BLO'd and beeswaxed.

I finished up my Council Jersey and a Craftsman boy's axe this weekend.

Now those are some handsome looking axes. May I ask where you got the handles or are they original? Recently restored one of my father's axes and those handles you have there look alot closer to the one that was on my dad's than the one I got from House.

Good lookin stuff today folks. SC T100, that beveled Jersey .... oh man.

COTS..Thanks! Yeah I'm a huge fan of this axe now. It's easily the looker of my collection.

johnnyt16 - Thanks as well! The dark handle on the Council is what was on it when I grabbed it from the flea market, so it's most certainly vintage. Anything new would need to be custom shaped from an existing handle. However, the handle on the smaller Craftsman is a standard hardware store Link brand boy's axe handle. If you go this route, make sure you get a good one with the wax coating and not the lacquered handle...saves a lot fo work and the waxed handles are better quality.

If you want a darker color for a new handle, you have to either stain one, or another option is to order from House Handle and specify all heartwood...it'll be darker and more reddish (especially once you add BLO or stain).

Hey marbat, I'm working on an AA&T that looks just like that one! Well, almost...mine has some pretty bad mushrooming (enough to cover up the first line of text) and it came with a straight handle. Do you know if that's the original handle style on yours?

I don't know, saw same axe on Ebay and it had a 14 inch handle. I find the head on the heavy side for a short handle but I will try it as is as I think it is a style of head leaning more towards splitting.

On a side note...very nice axes guys.
