What Did You Sharpen Today?

This needed a touch up, been cutting up boxes, a not expensive liner lock work knife, does a great job. 1000 grit diamond, soft Arkansas then stropped with plain leather.

Touched up my Opinel #8 using this small 4" by 1" stone, CBRIGHT 1PC Dual Sided 3000-4000#/8000-10000# Fine Grinding and Polishing Ruby stone and Agate Stone. While the pink side does some cutting, I have never found the white side, which is suppose to be up to 10k to make any difference in sharpening at all, so, I mainly use the pink side which does provide a nice sharp edge.

the water on there just shows it isn't soaking into it, when I sharpen I don't use any water on the stone, but I do need to scrub it clean using Bar Keepers Friend to clean the particles out...

You are correct about the white side of your stone, that is for polishing for a mirror finish, they don't cut at all, but the pink side does. I use oil on my pink stone, i personally find it seems to cut a bit better, but that might be my imagination. But i do think they clean up better after use, i just wipe it down with a rag, the one i have does not absorb the oil and just wipes clean. But it may clog up over time.

Today my Gary Creely Mako in Magnacut steel got some love from my Leading Edge sharpener and my Nano Hone diamond sharpening stones. To test Magnacut's performance and the heat treat a little bit, I took the edge to 1 micron on the Nano Hones. It turned out hair popping sharp in very little time. Typically I prefer a more "toothy" edge for my EDC knives, but I like to see how different steels perform at different levels of finish.

Getting ready and setting up on my Leading Edge sharpener:

The Stones:

First step, re-profile to 15 degrees per side. I checked the original edge on my Laser edge goniometer, and the original "factory" edge was 24 dps at the tip, and varied all the way to 14 dps at the heel. Nano Hone scratch pattern at 100 micron after the re-profile:

Next step - Scratch pattern of the 25 micron Nano Hone:

Scratch pattern of the 10 micron Nano Hone:

Final scratch pattern of the 1 micron Nano Hone. First pic is from the same angle as the others, second pic from a slightly different angle. No stropping, just the stones:

Can i ask where you got those from.
I buy all my stones from trusty good old Gritomatic. Best place for anything to do with sharpening.

Thanks very much.

Do you mind if I ask how these stones compare to the various Venevs?

Honestly, it's too early for me to give a proper opinion of the Nano Hones as I've only done 2 knives with them so far.

What I can say, is they don't provide much sharpening feedback, or at least not the type feedback that I've ever felt before from diamond stones. It almost feels like sharpening on very hard plastic, if you know what I mean? I assume it's a very hard resin that is used by Nano Hone. When I started the first knife, I thought to myself "these stones don't cut at all", but looking at the edge while I was sharpening - it clearly did cut and remove metal.

Another thing I can say is that you need to be careful with the tip of a knife with these stones, it's easy to have the tip dig in a little bit due to the holes inbetween the "mesh" pattern on the stones. Not really a problem, but something to be aware of. I would almost go so far as to say it could be seen as an advantage if you're new at sharpening, because you can immediately feel when you're about to roll off of the tip.

So far I've only used soapy water with them, and it seems to work well. It takes a fair bit of water for it's size because of the mesh pattern and I actually kind of like that the water sits in the little holes of the mesh pattern while sharpening.

As far as the end result is concerned, they left a great edge on both knives I've used them on.

That said, I won't be giving up my Venev stones anytime soon...at least not until I've done a couple hundred knives on these stones. :-)

Giving credit, where credit is due.
The lighting setup was inspired by 777 Edge 777 Edge . Thanks Burt!
FYI, I recently designed an attachment for the Kadet Pro and Kadet with and articulating arm for a light system. It attaches directly to the Kadet. Gritomatic is testing it out and should release it as an accessory/upgrade in the near future.

A test knife, my EDC, kitchen knife, my kids santoku. Though it looks like I missed a few spots on my kids.
