Minimum EDC kit:

A knife or multitool
A small compass
A lighter or ferro rod
Wallet
Keys w/mini tweezers
Bandana
Cell phone

Sometimes more, rarely less. Well...sometimes no cell phone, sometimes no wallet. Sometimes no keys. But always a knife and a fire source.

OK, maybe just always a knife. Unless I'm on a plane. So, absolute minimum EDC is....a bandana. Unless I forget it.
