What do you carry?

Manix, but I'm having second thoughts about S30V. I like everything about it except for that stainless. Still being evaluated. If Sal ever decides to sell one of these with a differentially hardened 1095 blade, I will get rid of the rest of my folders (and probably a few of my fixed blades as well) and not look back.
I have a gunting and a chinook in S30V. I like the steel a lot. It touches up easily and holds a good edge.

I'm not sure a differential heat-treat is worth that much to me on a pocketknife. I have no complaints about the S30V.

I EDC and love my Manix. Ive put it through its paces on many hard wood branches and never had a problem. The only time I have ever had a problem with the S30v was when I slashed through what I thought was a real houseplant but was actually artificial and reinforced with steel wire. Only a tiny bit of deformation which was gone with 2 strokes of a DMT but still, ouch.

I dont buy into this whole recent trashing of S30v. It seems to be the trendy thing to do to praise steel until it becomes the generaly accepted "super stainless", and then start trashing it. Remember BG-42? 154-CM? Heck, even 440-C has gone through the gauntlet of public opinion.

BTW, that little knife RR had was one of the coolest things that I've ever seen.

:D Thank you Sir! It certainly is a sharp little sucker. I have been carrying it to work every day (this is in a government office remember) and everyone who has seen it says "Isn't that cute!"

hehehe...They have *no* idea just how sharp and practical it is...

ps: I agree on both of the cheap knives...the Okapi is a fine working knife and carries it's head high in the looks department and the Opinels are a lot of fun to modify.

Ach, Scheisse! Ich habe etwas vergessen! Wie dumm von mir!

My car is also armed with a 12" Village Sirupati of Rusty's, the one which I posted about doing the wide crack repair with black Devcon. It was obviously a "user" khuk of his, and it continues in yeoman duties tucked between the passenger seat and the console for the obligatory "easy access."

"It also serves, that which only sits and waits."

Jeb, Howard - I respect both of your opinions. I just don't share them in this case. You do make a good counterpoint to my comment.

Note that I am trashing neither S30V nor the Manix. My point is that S30V isn't living up to my expectations in this particular case. Whether the problem is this particular blade, S30V in general, or my expectations isn't clear to me at this time. The knife is excellent in all other respects.

Oh, I know you're not trashing it. But do a search in the General forums for S30v and look at the recent thread. It just seems that all the stainlesses go through these cycles. The new one on the horizon is ZDP-1... something or other. Soon S30v will be in the position that 154-CM is in today.

The unreasonably hoplophobic sheeple society doesn't allow me to carry one. Not happy!

What am I supposed to use to cut packaging? Or binding? My teeth? Keys?

Idiotic and irrelevant.

BS (Before Sheeple), I used to carry both a CRKT M16 (Large Size) and either a Large Point Guard or Crawford Folder, or a custom-made-one-of-a-kind KK-style stainless neck/utility knife in a like kydex sheath or a CRKT Kasper Companion...

i carry a emerson cqc-8. it's not to encumbersome as I often forget i'm carrying it. the G-10 scales are hard on the pants though ;)

No offense taken. It would be pretty boring around here if we all looked at things the same way.

Out of curiosity, what is it you don't like about the S30V?

For a long time I carried a CRKT M-16 one small one if pocket carry, or a larger tanto blade CRKT M-16 or whatever the model number for that one is, when on the belt.
Though at the blade show I picked up a benchmade 210 activator fixed blade and that has been my carry ever since

Depends alot.

Casual - BM 710, 804, or Spyderco Paramilitary, on occasion a Perrin Street Bowie.
Suit: BM 940BTBlue

Just one of course, I'm not into carrying a dozen knives at once.

It doesn't seem to hold an edge particularly well...better than some of my knives, but nowhere nearly as well as I'd expected. Compounding the problem is that it's difficult to sharpen. It doesn't seem to respond well to anything other than a diamond stone - a serious drawback for me, as I have only one very coarse diamond hone for reprofiling.

By contrast, my low alloy stuff needs a stropping at the end of the day and the problem is solved. It strikes me as an expensive solution in search of a problem.

I've been reading some stuff about a problem with chipping but I haven't had any issues with this, even when chopping.

I usually carry my Cold Steel Safekeeper II and either my SOG Seal pup or my little Gerber sticker

I carry either a Sebenza, Spyderco Dodo, Benchmade 705D2, or a Kershaw Chive... I'll probably get a Manix soon enough too.

My Dodo has chewed through one pocket already. Dave's right when he says that G10's hard on the pants.

Edited to add: My first HI khuk, an 18" AK, stays in the truck.
