What do you own and Why...?

As my name implies, I am fairly new to the world of knives. In my fevered knife craze beginings I went nuts and bought/traded tons of knives. It got to the point that I realized I wasn't using what I had. So I culled the herd to the following:

CRKT peck: on keychain, small, easy to sharpen, great for "little" knife needs

Small Sebenza with Mastadon overlay:EDC, was going to trade away, but fell in love with it. Basic jeans/casual clothes carry. Don't need to say why I love it (you all know), but gets lots of use.

Camillus EDC 154cm: EDC when I am going to get my knife all cruded up. I use it in the garden, or when I am doing construction type work. Sebenza took its place as my jeans knife.

CRKT S-2-small beater and dress knife. Small and inexpensive enough to beat the crap out of. Easy to sharpen and inobtrusive in nice clothes. Pocket clip SUCKS. You can't get it off of pocket without two hands so it sits in the pocket.

Buck 110: Camp knife (I don't hunt). Concidering giving it to a friend who does hunt and uses a POS.

Chive: Alternate dress folder.

UDT: fun to play with and solid. Use rarely , not legal where I live.

Letherman in the car

I want a LUDT. But haven't made the plunge. That covers it...For now. Peace, Josh

Benchmade TSEK, was my first quality folder, i bought it as a Do all EDC, boxes, rope, flesh, it cuts them all, still use it often, although it maybe retired for setimental reasons.

Benchmade 940, blue, My "pretty" knife, i actually like it so much that it lives in its box, i may trade it in a few years when they get harder to find.

Kershaw Vapor II, handled one of these at A store and knew i had to have it, it is one of the best knives i have seen for the $, i used it for everything, making sharpened sticks, opening letters, boxes and more, it is my beater, but i still love it.

Camillus arclite, bought it because it was inexpensive and i didnt have any neck knives, carry it when jogging, but it currently lives in my car.

Cold Steel SRK, my main fixed blade knife, great value, i carry it when i go mountain climbing, its a rather lightweight knife for the amount of power it has, blasts through trees.

Cold Steel Kobun (carbon V) bought it when i first started out, i wanted A tanto, doesnt get muh use, it lives in my night stand to protect me from the commienazis.

victronox tinker, doesnt do that much, it lives with my Photon II microlight on paracord hanging from my bed, used more as a handle for the photon.

Letherman, rather useful do all tool, lately it has been spending time in my tool box.

Microtech LCC, my absolute favourite knife at the moment, general EDC use, i bought it because it's fantastic.

BM 910HS-My first knife. Absolutely loved the shape and chose it over an EKI CQC-7 because of theconventional grind and M2 steel.

MOD Ladyhawk-This is my dress knife, lol. Probably one of the meanest dress knives I have seen listed. It is also a good knife for IWB carry with a pair of athletic shorts and workout clothes.

Spyderco Matriarch- Traded a CRKT military apache for it. Apache was just too small for me. It had been carried, but the blade is perfect. This is my "**** hits the fan" knife.

BM 806- My newest acquisition. Always liked the AFCK, but could not bring mtself to get one when I had a perfectly good liner lock edc in the 910. The axis version came out and I really wanted to see what all the hype was about. Got a great deal on the for sale forum so I picked it up. It is now my edc around campus, although sometimes it stays home in favor of the 910.

Benchmade BM42 - trainer for gripstrength/dexterity and jo-jo for adults.

Buck Strider tanto - self defense.

Spyderco Gunting - self defense.

Gerber LMF - Combat/Camping.

Cold Steel mini Outdoorsman - Camping.

Gerber multitool - dead weight (one of the early made bad ones).

/Colinz

List off all that I own:

BK&T Patrol Machete: Used when camping to clear out any small underbrush near where I want to put the tent, and to clear low hanging branches.

Cold Steel Recon Tanto: Used as My Fixed blade that Can take anything I want it to do, my Abuse fixed blade. Carry when camping/hunting.

Cold Steel SRK: Used on day hikes when its the only fixed blade i carry, used beacuse it has a better all around utility design than my Recon Tanto. Also used as my EDC to work, where it is used to pry open create's and pry apart damaged skids.

Cold Steel Kobun: Used as my Self Defense fixed blade, its cheap, it's light/small, i dont care if i loose it, and its got a good blade for penetration.

Custom 4" Fixed blade by Tim Johnson: Used as my EDC to work when i dont take my SRK, gets more carry time than my SRK and is used for the same things at work, prying. Also used as my main fixed blade when working on cars.

CRKT M18: EDC, used mainly to cut open boxes.

Buck PCKS 110(BG-42, Indigo Royalwood, Nickel bolsters/rivits): Used as hunting folder, and EDC when something non-tactical is called for.

The list is Far to long to list here.

All the knives I bought, had some quality that made me buy them in the first place. My first port of call is always material quality. How well made are they and how good is the blade material? Secondly I look at practicallity and wheither I would likely find a use for it! Then price. Other factors swing into effect like the dreaded brand loyalty, desire and impulse.

In folders my current candidates are,

1. Large plain MM Classic Sebenza (6-50) in a G2 sheath as an EDC.
2. MOD CQD DD in leather coat as an EDC
3. Swiss Army Adventurer as an EDC in coat pocket
4. Leatherman Micra on keys with SAK above!
5. Small Wood Spiral Damascus Sebenza for posh carry (in G2 sheath)
6. Redwood Mnandi for gentlemans carry (24-25 IIRC)
7. 154CM Cammilus EDC for ocasional carry.
8. Microtech LCC D/A for the cool factor!
Fixed blades
1. My Doug Mondt custom in CPM 10V! One heck of a blade!
2. 154CM Puma Cougar. A very fine knife.
3. 1095 Ka Bar
4.D2 Ka Bar
5. Satin rubbed Gerber BMF.
6. BM M2 Nimravious

Oddities that I own include, Spyderco Matriarch, BM42a,Vaq Grande and the ever large Phrobris III Bayonet. Stuff like this I like but never use/carry for differing reasons, some legal, some common sense!:D

Camillus 420HC Arclite - my first fixed blade, my first neck knife, great for going to theaters.
Camillus 154CM EDC - my first really compact folder... very "sheeple-friendly" while being an excellent performer with fantastic ergonomics, also my first frame lock.
Spyderco CPM440V FRN Native - 'twas a gift from my brother from last christmas, it has quickly become one of my absolute favorite knives because of it's great ergonomics, light weight, and fantastic blade.
Kershaw 440A Blackout - the first real knife I ever bought for myself, I bought it for it's spiffy ergos, impressive blade, and the SpeedSafe was really cool!
Outdoor Edge AUS8A Zytel Magna - another one of my absolute favorite designs, for a big handed individual like myself it's huge, chunky frame is a breath of fresh air in a world of skimpy folders, it's also one of the best folders i've ever seen for $40.
Spyderco CPM440V Chinook - I received this as a gift from my dear parents, my first REAL high-quality knife, the ergonomics are great and it's ULTRA strong... it's the first folder I turn to in any real emergency.
Leatherman Wave - received this as a gift many years ago from my distant Uncle, i've never needed any other multi-tool, this one does it all!

So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
Very shortly in the future I intend to acquire a Becker Combat/Utility 7 for hard use chores requiring a big fixed blade, and also a Spyderco Almite Navigator for places when your knife has to be extra sheeple friendly (or when the blade limit is 3" or under).

General, out of curiousity, why do you not carry the matriarch? I am most wondering whether it is legal or common sense, lol. I have one and I think it is a great lethal self defense blade.

EDC's (I don't carry all of these every day, but in a weeks time all will be carried at least once):

Jaguar balisong - Just bought it Thursday night and I'm hooked now. I bought a vert/horiz belt sheath for it and I've become quite fast at producing an opened knife and then making it disappear.

Kershaw Chive - Money clip. Safety removed. It sits in the bottom of my pocket.

Dalton Cupid - "Oh $hit!" knife. Cool factor.

EKI waved CQC7 BTS - It's the knife I'm not afraid to use or **** up the finish.

Kershaw Vapor II - Poorman's Sebenza. I bought it because it had the look of a custom and because I needed a large framelock. I promptly took the knife apart and hit everything all over with 600 grit and Flitz. Now it looks presentable, semi mirror polished.

Knives that sit in "the box":

BM800FSBT - Fully serrated ATS34 AFCK. I keep it NIB since it is no longer made.

BM835HS - July 2000 KOTM. I also keep it NIB.

EKI Mach 1 BT - I took the BT off with progressively fine grits oof silicon carbide paper. I don't exactly know why I don't carry it.

Handmade fighter by Lyle Dehmlowe - This knife was given to me after I helped Lyle lay sod in his yard. He's a former riflesmith and a good friend. This was the only knife he made. He told me it needed a good home.

one2gofst, there are a number of reasons why I don't carry my Matriarch! Most importantly a knife to me is a tool and I bought the Matriarch as it was the only chance I figured I would get to own a knife like that. Secondly as I carry my blades for work and a...ahem 'hint' of defense my Sebenza and CQD is enough for even me! Thirdly the severe lack of 'any' utility in the Matriarch design makes it a one real use bit of kit. Not a luxury I can afford to carry day to day. Fourthly I would have a very... no impossible time explaining why I needed a knife like that to my workmates, never mind a Policeman! N5, The tip would break in normal use and the darn ATS-55 rusts like nothing else! Even with Marine Sentry!

I love the knife and dislike the steel. The edge holding of my other ATS-55 knives has been very good, but rust is a real problem for me on these knives even with a knifeKnuts obsession with fingerprints and cleaning. This is NOT a good thing. My plain Jane carbon steel knives give me far less trouble! I think the ATS-55 in my Matriarch blade is defective in some way. Pity!

If I were to need a knife for self defense I carry two of the best anyway! But I sure would like to see the look on a BG's face if I opened a Matriarch! If it were me, I would run like Hell!:D

But then I have seen what a slight cut from this knife can do...

Be careful wiping it down is all I will say...:o !

Don't have to tell me twice. I cut myself just a little on the knuckle after oiling it. Those teeth bite down deep! It is all healed with no scar, but it is still tender to the touch.

I would run from a matriarch too. Then again I would run from most any knife and tend not to do things that would get a knife pulled on me.

BM721 Pardue - my current EDC
Small sebenza - for when i need a smaller knife that isnt too "tac" looking and wont raise any eyebrows
HI WWII Khukuri - for the things that just demand a good chop

Andrew Limsk

Losta stuff: cause I want to. ;)

Emerson Commander: Utility/Defense. No if, ands, or buts, its MY knife. Had others since then, had others before the commander, that I still own, but dont carry.

Newt Livesay Necker: Not ideal, but its the only necker I've got for now, and its a lot better than nothing.

Ontario Spec-Plus Marine Raider: One of my beaters, heavy, hard, abusive work goes to this.

Cheap, India made Kukri: Another beater.

Cold Steel Recon Scout and Bushranger: Both removed of their handles, waiting customization into fighters, just to satisfy my own perversity.

Timberline Aviator: Collector piece. Sterile, prototype, 1 of 5.

Outdoor Edge Impulse: Was my back-up folder, until it started to have major lock problems. Now its waiting for me to contavt OE about it.

I've got others, but they do nothing really... so I didnt mention them. (Either that or I'm thinking of selling them soon, and dont want to mention them here.)

I am not going to take time to list all my knives, but I will try to list the ones I use the most.

Buck 709 slipjoint - Let's face it, most of us carry too much knife for the job. (I know my grandad would have scoffed at anything bigger than a carbon-steel Barlow for anything. Even when hunting, he'd just take his normal pocketknife plus a few of the kitchen knives and a steel wrapped up in a towel.) Anyway, my Buck 709 two-blader can and does handle most everything I throw at it. Disappears in the pocket and, because I work in an office, I don't need anything bigger, at least not during the week.

Spyderco Endura - Lightweight and plain edge, I could carry this knife in my beach shorts and never even know it's there. I grew up carrying a Buck 110 or Buck 110-style knife more days than not. But these days I don't care much for belt sheathes and the weight of those big ones is just too much for my tastes. That's were the flyweight Endura scores big points.

Victorinox Spartan - I wanted to have a pocketable SAK with a corkscrew (both to hold that nifty mini-screwdriver they make and for actually opening up wine bottles). Carried this one down the aisle when I got married in 2000 so I don't think I'll be getting rid of it. :D I moonlight as a musician and use it a lot when setting up for and breaking down after gigs.

Victorinox Adventurer - Bought this one before I moved to Europe in 1993. I lived over there for five years on just two knives, a SAK Classic and this one. I wanted a locking knife that I could use in last-ditch self defense situations and - more importantly to me - could open beers, cut salami and bread, etc. etc. I carried it all over the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Turkey and Holland. A great knife, this one now stays in the truck.

Gerber Folding Sportsman II - I just bought this one recently on a whim. Got to say, I love it! Its blade is roughly the same size as my Schrade LB7 but the handle is smaller and overall it weighs a lot less and takes up a lot less space in the pocket. A bit old-school perhaps, but I can't get enough of the sleek lines and tasty feel of the wood and brass. A sentimental favorite.

Leatherman Wave - A genuine Leatherman and a one-hand opener to boot. What's not to like? I mostly keep this one in the kitchen drawer and use it all the time.

Buck 526 Executive - I tote this one to church and weddings and other dress-up affairs. For the money, you can't get a better, more elegant gentleman's folder.

That, my friends, is it as far as the regular rotation goes. I have a drawer full of other good knives, but none worth much more than $60 or so. I like users that are solid value. At the same time, I don't like holding on to too many knives. That's strange to say around here, I know. ;) Still, I'd rather see my extra knives in the pockets of guys who will use 'em than see 'em collecting dust in my drawer. One of these days, I need to borrow a digital camera and finally get rid of my unused knives via Ebay - my wife tells me that all the time! :D

Here's my list of "keeper" knives and what I use them for:
1. Cold Steel Master Hunter - hunting.
2. Cold Steel Twistmaster drop point - hunting.
3. CRK&T M16-03Z - EDC.
4. CRK&T Stiff Kiss MDP - hiking, canoeing, camping.
5. Leatherman Micra - BOB.
6. Leatherman Wave - EDC, camping.
7. Meyerco Bolt Action Hunter - EDC, hunting, camping.
8. Meyerco Buddy System - hiking, canoeing, camping.
9. Spyderco Moran drop point - BOB, hiking, hunting, canoeing, camping.
10. Victorinox Huntsman - hiking, camping, hunting.
11. Victorinox Swisstool - BOB, EDC, camping.
12. assorted Forschner kitchen knives - kitchen, camping, hunting (butchering).
I have some other knives I have not used enough to form a firm opinion on, and others I would like to get that may make my list, but for know this is it.
I could probably get by fairly well with just the Wave and the Moran drop point, if I had to pare down.

Wow...thanks to all of you for helping me revive this thread!!! Keep the comments coming!!! :) I am very impresed by the range of everyone's "tastes"...

A bunch of old knives i forget even where they came from. Trappers, stockmans, an assortment of odd little ancient folders etc etc Some look to be 100 years old, or close.

2 SAK's one red one black. Useful as all get out.

2 CRKT S-2's, one small, one medium. I carry the small one but not the bigger one since it likes to come open. Very sturdy knives with cool blade shapes. They were only 25 bux! I messed up the bigger S-2 by grinding a little metal off the tang to allow it to close onto the ball detent better, it now hits the edge on the bar that holds it together. I ground some off the bar and it still hit. F it, I never really liked how it comes open anyways. I'll use it as a total beater now, but not for edc. I may even give it away.

1 CRKT Apache II, another good blade shape and cool aluminum scales. This one gets carried quite a bit since it slides in and out of the pocket so easy with the smooth scales. Only 25 bux!

tiny Buck 505 mini lockback. I bought this from a friend in 1983 -1984 or so for 2 bux. he found it on the screamin' eagle roller coaster at six flags. dissapears in my pocket. Good with shorts.

buck lite, tiny lockback only with cheap plastic handles. again, great with short since it weighs next to nothing.

Explorer Wilderness II 10"OAL fixed blade with hollow handle. Lays next to my bed in case someone breaks in. Bought it in 1984 or so and still havent actually worn it or really used it!

Big Cheap chinese linerlock I got as a freebie from Southsummit on my first order. I'm going to give this one away to a buddy.

A huge POS Pakastan made folder that just plain sucks. Why do I keep it? I don't know either. Memories I guess.

A HUGE cheap machete that is somewhere in my mom's house.

My favorite.....a Benchmade 556 plain edge. My most carried knife. amazingly smooth action, good closing bias, great 440c steel, great blade shape, great handle, fun to flick open AND shut. This is an awesome little knife!

I have a couple neckers on order right now. Outdoor edge "wedge" and "wedge II" these look like great little blades and I've read a bunch of good stuff. They were $11 and $13 respectively.

If I like my wedge's, My next knife will be a Hatin Neck knife, and/or a Blackwood small heavy duty tactical. All these look awesome and would be very practical edc's in addition to my little griptilian.
Plus they would be great heirlooms.

...oh I forgot my little Gerber axe. That's a mean little f'r!!

Current and still trying to find the just right ones
1) EDC - this one is driving me nuts I don't know how many I've gone through to find the right one - presently a RW Clark Model 3
worn IWB. Soon to be a Charles Marlow Lg Framelock. I'm hopeing this will be the one :D But what'll happen to the Clark?

2)EDC at work - Randall Triathlete - this one has lasted the longest it occupies its place as a backup knife is razor sharp and I thus far only admire it. Becayse on my belt carry my old Buck 110 which is a politically correct knife to carry in my work (although the civies we share the office space with are starting to give us a hard time
 )
Also on duty belt is Buck tool replaced gerber multi tool which snapped when opening a box! I like the buck tool.

3) Hunting - Outdoor edge Kodi skinner
4) Camp knife - will be a new Craig Cramerer custom when it arrives
might becom my general outdoor knife!

5) Bushwacker - AllenBlade CPB - verdict still out on this one, if the C.Cramerer blade is as good as it looks, I'll be looking more fore a khurki as a pure chopper and get rid of the CPB.

I like the idea of a money clip knife suggestions please but not the CRKT KISS type don't like their looks

As for all the rest of the family ( wife & 4 kids)
- fixed blades - old timer safety guide, scharade sharp finger, western fixed blade ( u/k model) all walmart knives all good enouh to get them started on hunting. All have a Victoinox Ranger except daughter has just got my swiss buck. Wife has fallkiniven WM1 and an Opinel - her hunting knife.

Also have Bill Siegal green Utility that'll be given to my son who will be applying for the Canadian Armed forces later this year.I figure it'll make a nice gift after basic training is done
