What do you own and Why...?

Hi. Daily carry a large regular sebenza, my new all around edc, a stainless steel spydie with serrated edge - old faithful - for more agressive cutting chores. a MOD CQD MkI for urban survival, a superknife when there is a need for cutting in a more PC manner - don't want to alarm the sheeple too much, a leatherman wave for everything. I tell you its a challenge to carry all this in dress slacks without bulging out all over. Sometimes I'll add a military, or an emerson cq7, or a microtech lcc just because I really like them and I'm wishy washy. I used to worry about all the hardware I was lugging around but after reading the posts on this forum I guess its pretty normal. :D

I know what you mean. I work at a university (does my name hint at that??? ;) ). My nostalia-inspiring slip-joints are definatly more sheeple friendly than the Strider AR or even lg. sebenza I used to carry (but it WAS fun whipping them out...while it lasted).

EDC: Large, plain Sebenza
Victorinox Fieldmaster
SOG PowerPliers (for work/play, not at Church or dating my wife!)

Hunting: Matt Harildstad custom hunting knife (www.telusplanet.net/~matth/hunt_gal.htm).

Military Service: CRK GB (I'm going to sell it now that I'm retired)

Under the truck seat: Himalayan Imports BAS

I have got more, but haven’t seen them in a while as they are packed. Here is what I have at the “ready”…

Fixed
· Simonich Bitterroot – love the size for being a fixed. My good luck knife and EDC
· Bark River Woodland Special – for the woods. Love the convex grind and appearance.
· Frost Mora (non-stainless) – have several for the abuse. No better knife for the money.
· Cold Steel Master Hunter – bought it before the Bark River, oh well.

Folders
· Small Sebenza – have a Native American, Plain, Unique and Lisa’s Pick. Is there a better folder?
· Umfaan – great little folder for dress. Wish it had S30V.
· Mnandi – got a Bloodwood and African Blackwood for dress.
· Leatherman Wave – Carrying more and more.
· Gerber Brass Folders – have several from the late 70’s(?) and 80’s. Great production knife at that time. My mom got me my first folder.

I know my fixed list will be longer after the Blade Show.

My list is as follows:

Lone Wolf Tighe- wanted one for awhile and finally landed one, quality knife but I think I need time for it to grow on me. Zipped through a couple of cardboxes like butter.

Parker stag small lockback- got this for about 12 bucks awhile back, for some reason it finds itself in my pocket a lot. Nice stag handles, I honed the blade to a real keen edge. A nifty cutter all in all and a nice change of pace from the dreaded tactical folders.

Spyderco FRN Delica- Spydies are a personal fave and this is probably the handiest one I own. Inexpensive, lightweight and a wickedly sharp VG10 blade all in a decidely non threatening size. What more could you want? My most used edc. Spyderco hit a home run with this one.

Spyderco stainless endura- this is a stand in for my long sold Spydie Police. I carry this when I want something that could double as a self defense item in a pinch. Snaps open with a comforting click and needless to say is Spydie sharp.

Bulldog stag stockman, this I carry for retro thrills. I used to own a beautiful Eye Brand stockman that I gave to an ex girlfriend in a fit of madness. It had the loveliest stag scales. The Bulldog is not quite as nice but is a handy little slipjoint that fits great in a jacket pocket.

Buck Damascus 110- my favorite knife. I only carry it for some woods walking but it rarely sees any serious use. It's just so handsome, I can't bear to keep it in the drawer. The best looking stag on any folder I've owned. A gem I picked up on ebay. This will follow me to the grave.

EDC - SAK Soldier, Spyderco Delica, Spyderco Kiwi, Schrade Muskrat, Uncle Henry Muskrat - depending on how I'm feeling, I only carry one at a time. I also have a LM Squirt on my key chain. These knives have demonstrated that they can generally accomplish most of my knife needs throughout a day in the city.

Hunting - In addition to my EDC I will have either my Swamp Rat Bandicoot or my Marble's Trailcraft. I love the looks of both of these knives and they do great at most hunting tasks including field dressing and dinner food prep.

Fishing - What ever EDC I happen to have with me that day. I mostly catch and release so all I need is something to cut the line with. At times I may keep a trout, but my Schrade Muskrat has proven itself enough knife to handle that.

Camping and Hiking - In addition to my EDC, a BK-9, Swamp Rat Bandicoot, and my Gerber Sport Axe. The BK-9 and the Sport Axe don't get carried on any hikes though. With the Sport Axe, I really don't need to bring the BK-9, but i just love swinging that knife. Really can't think of why I always bring the Bandicoot while camping, but somehow I always find a use for it, regardless if I have a better tool on hand for the job. My EDC (most likely the SAK soldier) will handle the majority of my knife needs while camping, and I'd bet if this is all I brought, besides being bored, I'd get by just fine.

"..nothing ever quite stays the same". Well not in my house!

In March of 2002 I was carrying a variety of large Sebenza's........still have a Sebenza, just not the same ones as in 2002. I have really pared down my collection to try and get knives that I will have utter confidence in carrying. They are as follows;

- JWS large Evolution liner lock. Simply one of the finest examples of how a tactical liner lock knife should be built.
- JWS large Evolution frame lock. Again, one of the finest examples of how a custom tactical frame lock knife should be built.
- T. Bose/Case Dogleg jack knife. Great edc. Slipjoint with a small pen blade and a large spear point blade. The most used knife I have.
- CRK 7.0 Green Beret. Only fixed blade I have, but what a fixed blade to have!!
- Leatherman Wave. Everyone must have a multi-tool.

These next three are not here yet, but are forthcoming;

- JWS LDC tactical folder. One of the, if not the, stoutest tactical folders JW Smith has ever built!
- RJ Martin Avenger framelock. That famous "Martin" edge plus a framelock? How could I not own one!!
- Classic Sebenza, large model. Special order from tallpaul, as this is the "Calvary" model. Thinking I may present this one to my wife to carry when she rides her motorcycle, after all every "biker chick" needs a good knife!!

Lots of changes in the past two years as far as the specific knives go, guess I'll check back in in 2006 and see what has changed by then.

Good thread WS, and glad you brought it back up!

Wow, aside from my dramaticly downsized Busse collection here goes:

EDC
Large Classic Sebbie, soon to get Mayonized and pouched by MtMike. The one and only folder I own.
Fixed blades: Busse Straight handled Badger Attack, Busse Mean Street. Sometimes Swamp Rat Bandicoot or Howling Rat.

WORK
Swamp Rat Camp Tramp or Battle Rat whichever finds it's way into the work bag or needs sharpening. Used to use a Ka-Bar, but after breaking one (Camillus) slicing cardboard my confidence level went way down. Still have a Ka-Bar brand one. I like it.

HOME
Swamp Rat Howling Rat for kitchen duties. This is my favorite of the whole SwampRat line. It is just so handy for so many things. May get dethroned by the BogDog in D2 if it ever arrives. Used to carry the HR as EDC till my wife claimed it for kitchen duties. Ordered another one to avoid a fight. (Believe me, after almost 30 yrs it's easier to spend the $$$ and let her claim the knife) I got to keep the MtMike sheath though, so no big deal.

Rob

Now...three years have gone by since my last update...and five years since starting this thread. Please see the bottom of my original post on page 1 to see how my collection has evolved...how has yours?
