What do you really use your knives for......

Charlie Mike,

Proud Wanker (meant with all positive) ...

The facial expression in that first pic has "can I borrow your knife" reply written all over it (bum-a-smoke, etc.).
The first feeling that comes over me is typically, are you f'ing serious - you don't carry a knife, and expect me to hand you mine WTF!

I suppose if you give that look as soon as they begin to speak, or b4 ... Asshole Repellent ;-)

Asshole repellent... People don't ask me for "a dollar" or a cigarette.

Please send dollar and Cigarette to,

But in reality CM I have to ask. If someone was to get in an altercation wih you wouldn't you be scared they could grab your knife when you wear it like that very easily with their left hand? This would put it right in edge down blade forward left hand for them.

That is the hardest thing you asked.. Let me try to tell. We'll I do carry knives or edc like stupid for nothing. Like my friend or co working asked me " hey borrow me your knife" I said I don't have but they know I had. Well I carried for self defense purposes that's all. They say don't used your knife to just cut anything..

I do HVAC work and use my knives every single day.
Installed a 4 ton, 48,000 BTU evaporator coil today. Broke the box down with my Link. Cut some nasty & old insulation out of the supply duct, torture on edges. Trimmed the new insulation to fit. Sliced up the old drain tubing. Cut new tubing to size. Sliced off old refrigerant tubing insulation and cut new stuff to size.
Lots of other little finishing stuff.
The Link is the HOB Exclusive and has S35VN. Held an edge really well!
Little stropping tonight and it will be right back to screaming sharp!! I actually enjoy bringing my edges back after a tough day's work!
So yes, I use my knives quite a bit, thank you!!
Joe

I use a folder every single day for assorted cutting. Nothing very strenuous or hard on a knife. It is no three times a week or three times a month thing. I would miss its presence almost immediately.

With fixed blades, I rarely cut anything even if I am carrying one out in the woods. The folders get all the work. So I often ask myself why I am carrying the fixed blade at all? Answer > just in case and because I like to.

Not if I grab it first...

Reality check, What is the daily purpose of your folder or fixed blade.? I would imagine cleaning your fingernails, Opening the mail, Cutting a long thread etc. Im not talking about the 3 times a year you go camping, or backyard bush crafting. I would hope some people camp and back pack in and use their knives quite a bit. I'm curious on a daily occurrence what do you use your S90V, D2, 5160, 1095 knife for.

I use my Buck 110 while doing service work maybe once twice a week at the most.

I'm curious as to why a knifemaker would make a post with this confrontational tone. I do not require your approval as to what I "really" use my knives for. Many of us camp or mess around in our backyards a lot more than three times a year.

My answer? I use my knives whenever I have need of a knife to cut things. If I'm reading your post in the wrong light, then I apologize. I just don't understand the question, when you answer it for yourself. Yes, most of us open mail, cut threads or "etc.". Not sure what else needed to be said. Then you list of bunch of steel types, a couple of which are supersteels. Are you attempting to make a "You don't need that!" argument?

Its not confrontational. Was a general question out of curiosity.

Makael,

I would have to say that I agree with Quiet, both initially and after reading last reply (from Makael).

When I initially read the OP, I thought the question was "leading" (confrontational/challenging tone related to either folks carrying potentially needlessly - meaning they really don't use their knives for good purpose, or the second part relating to the list of steels somehow indicating that the type of steel means something relative to the typical uses of average user daily carry choices).

I came back, choosing to take the high road and reply from a perspective that perhaps the goal was to open thinking of useful purpose options that may not readily present themselves to the casual user.

I will say that I overlooked Makael being listed as a knifemaker. It is confusing that the OP would include the statement "I use my Buck 110 while doing service work maybe once twice a week at the most." This seemingly leads a reader (me at least) to believe the subject of the question relates to not using a daily carry pocket-knife very much ... ?

Is the Buck 110 your daily carry of choice?
If so, why would a knife-maker make this choice over a product of his own making ?

Is the Buck 110 only a carry option "while doing service work"?
If so, that would be understandable because doing service work would mean there are many other more specific tools near at hand. But still, why not carry a product of your own making ...?

Why the mention of those steels in the OP?

Ok fine you'll grab the knife first. You can still send that dollar and cigarette though.

LAWL.

Here's to hoping you never actually have to grab it before some moron does and may your life be peaceful, uneventful and boring.

If you let someone close enough to grab it, you deserve a "teachable" moment.

:D

Charlie Mike,

RGEO because you like to dance close ..., I knew you had a warm side ;-)

I almost never have a need for a pocket knife in my daily life while away from home. I carry a small slipjoint (currently a Case Peanut in 420HC steel) during the work week. I haven't used it weeks.

I use them for cutting stuff.
Some days have more cutting than others.

At 4:30 a.m. today, I used my Medford for cutting some odd plastic material flashing stuff from the edge of the kitchen counter, as it has broken off jagged, and I needed to get it flush with the wood underneath to get a measurement for the wood I will be filling the gap with prior to sealing it up with some plastic wood-like compound (the measurement of the opening is 1 inch by 3.5 inches, if anyone cares ;)).

I used the ZT 0804CF on Monday night when repairing the main support under the sink at the front of the kitchen counter; had to get the 2x4 angled at the top to slide past the sink. A pull cut saw and the 0804CF did that just fine. :)

And I cut some other less interesting things during the week too, like packages and whatnot.

Mail, food, packaging, string, and tape.
I don't use my knife to clean my fingernails though, because I have a nail tool on my TRIM's or my leatherman micra.
I also don't use my knife as a prybar or a screwdriver as my leatherman fuse or vic's all have a decent sized Flathead I can pry with, Philips driver to turn screws with.
I have no requirement for a locking blade because I know how to use a knife properly for my needs, but locking blades are nice as they require less force to open than a slipjoint.

I forgot to mention, tactical banana bunch separation. Goes without saying, really.
