What do you really use your knives for......

I agree, plumber here as well. Plenty of things to use a knife for without looking for a reason. All day today and yesterday I constantly used an s110v manix to cut fiberglass insulation and tape to put on a copper line we installed.

Making that manix work! Pipe insulation and the white foil tape would be a good way to test edge retention since it pretty brutal on edges.

Cutting things. I am switching between a Kesha's link and a CRKT HIssatsu now on and off as my usual folder.
Opening mail, boxes......just general use. I am liking the hissatsu way more than I thought I would.

Mostly food prep and gardening chores.

Big veggies and fruit especially in summer.

Plants, twigs, branches, fertilizer bags, plastic containers, flower pots, cables, ties, wire, rope, twine at work.

SD is also in mind (though I carry other better defense tools, but can't have a gun and won't discard the blade as a last ditch or intimidation tool)

I work around horses a lot of the day, so I use my EDCs to open hay bales and bags of shavings almost every day, and cut bandaging, and punch holes in leather when necessary. I also just do the regular run of the mill cutting: food, packages, boxes, etc. I also occasionally use my blades for trimming of vines and small limbs when I see the need while out and about on the property.

Today I managed to accessorize matching green Ti with my monster energy shirt...

And while I didn't cut my finger (yet), I did get to open a package from bodybuilding.com containing all the supplements for my fiance and I to help us both get back into shape (after a lazy year off for both of us); along with new sparring mitts to help with training, especially since my son is really taking a liking to his karate classes, something I'm really looking forward to working on with him...

Mine don't get much use at all. My job prohibits the use of personal knives on the premises other than break time, otherwise, mine would see a ton of use. Needless to say, I may open the occasional piece of mail or use it to tackle the unexpected task that may arrise.

Same here. I'm hell on mail, haha!

My first knife was a red Swiss Army Knife when I was 11 y/o. It was awesome having a tool for prying logos, a toothpick for lunch, and a small blade for sharpening sticks.

I'm now 34 and work in a hospital. I carry a ZT 0452CF hidden away from sight because of the "what ifs" throughout the day. Living in earthquake territory and a densely populated area, a knife could be useful for a number of things to save a person's life.

In helping an Audio / Video tech at a wedding, they asked for a something to cut with, and I unhesitatingly presented my knife to which they replied, "thanks OJ" since then I became a bit more conscious of how blades are perceived these days.

To me knives are functional art. Beautiful aesthetics, meticulously designed, pridefully carried, and humbling when in the presence of an impressive one. I'll always carry a knife and a handkerchief for whatever the occasion.

I cut a thread off a towel earlier this week. With a Protech Rockeye (frag pattern handle for better grip under adverse conditions, like if I broke a sweat or a meteor impacts my house). Tried to clean my nails with it, but holding that shaving sharp blade against my palm made me nervous. Figured there had to be a better way.

Oh, and I opened a box on Wednesday, I think.

I chopped a 2" thick sapling down yesterday to make a hiking stick with my poor little Tenacious. Took it like a champ.

I was very surprised. I got the little Spyderco free so it's been my test bed. Very tuff and resilient. 😉

Sounds like it was "tenacious". :D

It's pretty retarded that someone would ask for a cutting tool, then get snarky when they are handed exactly what they were asking for.

I have significant thumb weakness and can barely pinch. Even in an urban setting that means slicing opening a lot of packages that most others could just rip open. Like a bag of potato chips. I also use my knife for food every day as well as some more 'tool' applications when doing DIY, etc.

I share this sentiment. I dont openly carry large fixed blades but do carry knives for SD, especially XL cold steels anytime I leave the house along with a handgun. The other night a old friend from high school was stabbed by a bum who asked him for money outside a gas station. When he refused the bum pulled a knife a stabbed him in the gut, now hes in the hospital in bad shape. I dont let those parasites finish their sentence or get within ten feet.

Honestly I hear all these self defense stories involving vicious attack bums who seem to basically say "yer spare change or your life." However I have never seen anything like this from any bum I have ever seen or heard of. I am not saying your story isn't true so please don't take it that way. All I am saying is that I hear people saying all the time how they are worried about the bun approaching them and are on high alert and ready to defend when said bum does. In my experience most bums are more concerned with getting their next fix (addiction is a common thread amongst the homeless) and know that attacking someone will chance them landing in jail where they won't be getting that drink or blast of crack or whatever for a while. Especially considering most bums have turf they regularly inhabit and the local cops know them.

All I am saying is that I am shocked it happened. I often see self defence classes for women treat a bum approaching you in a parking lot as a high danger scenario. They know asking for change is a numbers game, the more you ask the more you make. I have never seen one extorting people for their money then attacking when that person doesn't pay up.

Again not saying it doesn't happen or didn't happen to your friend. Just that you don't have to see them as parasites, just people with problems, problems that may be different from yours or mine but still just problems. Also they are not parasites you should see how many bottles and recycling they bring in a single day. It's enough to fill up like half a warehouse in my city. The same city where you can get fined for not putting your recycling in the recycling bin; then the city throws away 70% of that recycling because they don't have the capacity to recycle it.

Strange world.

It doesn't surprise me that you've never heard of this happening, being from where you're from. Lucky you. In southern Louisiana it happens all the time. In fact stabbing and shootings happen everyday day here, with only a small percentage making to the news when someone actually dies from there wounds. CMs example also happens all the time, someone gets in close with a "hey man got s cigarette?" While youre reaching for your pack next thing you know a gun is in your chest. I know this bc I have family members who are police officers. They stop by and I listen to their radio for 5 minutes, "stabbing on such and such street, shots fired on such and such street.." There is a war zone in my city that most people have no clue even exists. And I certainly didnt say all bums are going to stab you if you dont "pay up," most of the time they just go about their business, but you absolutely SHOULD be on high alert when a stranger approaches you in a parking lot asking for anything bc you have absolutely no clue what their intentions are. I dont have time to sit there and wonder about their problems, I have problems too, its called staying alive for my family. Im certainly not going to go back and forth with you about this on an internet board. I have my outlook and you have yours and Im not trying to convince you to look at things from my perspective. Obviously all bums arent killers but that one times a bitch isnt it?
