What do you think about Southern Grind Spider Monkey

What do you think of the satin blade ?
Is the stonewash good enougth to hide scratches and marks ?

It should hide scratches well enough. When I first got mine I thought there was a scratch in the blade going right through the Grind logo, but it's actually part of the logo itself!

The tool kit is sold separately but for the Spider Monkey it just takes a bit. We have started including the 2 prong bit with purchases and I think most other dealers do that now as well.

Ive not purchased one from you but one was purchased from a very reputable dealer online a little over a month ago. One was purchased from a brick and mortar store and the other was my replacement from southern grind directly and none of them came with a tool.

Also all of my CS dealings with them have been in the past month and none of them were good as the only person I ever got ahold of was not actually the CS Rep.

I am going to link this post to my contact and see what he can tell us.

I would hate to see their CS slip, because that is one aspect where a smaller company can really shine and they truly did shine a few years ago.

Does anyone has pictures of the spider monkey side by side with BM 940 or ZT 0550, ZT 0566?
Or other standards productions knives.... to have some size comparison?

I ditto all of the good stuff already said about the Spider Monkey. Perfect EDC, great F&F...I really like mine.

Here is a pic of mine with a 566 and a Kershaw Skyline. I lined them up by pivot but it is almost the exact same size as the Skyline when open and closed.

I guess it sounds like I've been hating on the company but I actually own 4 of their knives and really like them. I was just giving an honest opinion on my customer service experience.

Here are the 4 that I own.

Quality can be spotty; first one that I got had a very stiff and gritty deployment. It also had way to early lockup, almost non existent, in not sure how it even stayed locked open.

Used their customer service, it wasn't very good, took me a week to get ahold of anyone. I never got in contact with their customer service rep "Karly"

I finally got ahold of im guessing their lead production guy Mike. He was helpful and friendly. He got me a replacement sent out.

Doesnt pertain to the spider monkey but I bought one of their tool kits and the bit did not fit any of the four knives I had of theirs.

I believe i would try to find one to handle in person as I would not order anything else of theirs online. Also handled a few more in person with similar opening and lock up. Coupled with my bad customer service experience it makes them a tough buy for me.

Its a shame though as I really like their knives. But like I said I've never been able to get in touch with their CS Rep. Which makes it hard for me to want to get knives from company's like that.

I plan on writing a review thats more in depth of my experience with their knives and customer service as I own 1 bad monkey and 3 spider monkeys.

That's sad to hear. I just got done with a cs issue with a bad monkey I've used for over a year. It developed major lock slip. You could close the blade without pushing the lock. I sent a email and got a response from Karly in an hour or so. She was very polite in answering my questions and I sent it in. Just yesterday, I had a brand new knife waiting on me when I got home from work. It was inspected and sent by Karly herself. I'm happy. All I got to say. Great company

Was it hard use or moderate?

Was it hard use or moderate?

I don't know what would be considered hard use but was and is my every day carry at work. Opens several times a day with the wave for well over a year. I didn't beat on it or anything like that.

Thanks you guys for the pictures!

I pulled the trigger on a spider monkey with satin blade.
Just have to wait to get it in my mail box now ;)

Congrats! Let us know how you like it when it shows up. Now I just want to see one of their Penguin models out in the wild.

you will love it --great feel, light weight and you can get the blade stupid sharp if you want.

I think you will like it.
I picked one up about a week ago. It really is the perfect size for my EDC needs. Much lighter and more pocket friendly than my ZT566, and a bit more substantial than my BM 940...pretty much hits that sweet spot.
The lockup on mine is early, about 20%, but seems solid. I figure that gives the liner some room to migrate - I'd rather start out with early lockup than late lockup.
Fit and finish is great, blade perfectly centered, adequately sharp.
The only issue I had with it was the clip...it was way off the scale, wouldn't even hold to thick jeans. It also created a hot spot for me, so off it came. So it actually didn't matter that it was too loose. It's nice to have a knife I can slip in the front the pocket of my jeans without a clip advertising its presence to everyone. And it feels much better in hand sans clip.
