What do you think about Southern Grind Spider Monkey

Thanks you guys for the pictures!

I pulled the trigger on a spider monkey with satin blade.
Just have to wait to get it in my mail box now ;)

Congrats man! Just curious where did you buy one in France?

Usually I used a web shop that offer most of the american brands and a very good customer service.
They have lots of ZT, Spyderco, BM, ESEE or even CR knives and when I am looking for something specific that they don't have in their catalog, I ask them if they can get it.

When they cannot get some models , I use some american shops.
So far I have used Knife art, Knifeworks and knife center , mainly for there exclusives.

I this particular case, since I had allready a PM2-S110V on pre order at knife center (impossible to get this one in FR otherwise), I have asked them if they can add the spider monkey on my order to save on transportation costs.

Here is the story :)

Next to a ZT0562...

That bad boy is beautiful!!

Spoke with a member of management at Southern Grind and he helped resolve my issue and told me that they had been understaffed but they did not want customer service to slip as that was something they had a good track record with. Mike was very helpful and took care of me. I like their products and will continue to buy in the future.

I bought one and returned it due to it displaying lock-rock. Southern Grind sent me another, it was displayed more lock-rock than the first and the blade was off-center.

The knife had good fit and finish, sized well for edc. and was attractive. I wish it would have been right as it should be, but it was not; twice. I like the design.

I sent mine back for refund. I won't be trying another.

Sorry to hear that. I never heard of anyone with those troubles with the Bad Monkey. I wonder if they had problems getting the smaller Spider Monkey dialed in.

The quality control manager did mention something about a run of blades with pivot holes that were out of spec - oversized. This may have been the issue. I chose to end my frstration after the second attempt. I am passing no company opinion; just my experience with them.

Was it the spider monkey or bad monkey?

Got mine from Whitty, it's a great knife.

I was considering buying the Bad Monkey but needing a smaller and lighter knife to keep in my pocket at work I opted for the Spider Monkey. I have one on the way now. I have heard a lot of really positive feedback about it but a few negative reports too. It seems like there are way more people happy with the Spider Monkey than not.

Since I can't hold one in person I will have to hope I get one that I am happy with. In the past it was easy for me to get excited when I get a new blade and not be objective at first. No I am a lot more objective. Will follow up when I get it.

The Spider Monkey is ideal for me. I have an all black one now, and a satin blade version coming this week. It typically shares time in the pocket with my two small 21's (tango and Insingo), and my ZT 0450 CF's.

I handled one Spider that had a very early lockup, like someone else noted earlier, but the other 3 I've handled were great.

I really can't say enough good about this knife. An almost ideal dec knife for me.

Well I got hold one yesterday. Was surprised to see my local Bass Pro had them in stock. I was so estatic. Even though I had one on order I would have bought another on the spot to have a second one. However I was really disappointed. I wanted to LOVE this knife so much and yes there some nice things about it. Quality materials are definitely there. Its beautiful also. The carbon fiber is really nice and loved the stonewash on the blade.

However the quality control was not good. There were mill marks of some kind on the liner next to the scale on the back of the knife and the blade was very off center. The detent was extremely mushy. I was so sad and I called this morning and canceled my order.

Maybe the one I held was a lemon I dont know but I didnt want the hassle of getting one and not being happy and having to send it back. I will still keep an eye out. Maybe one day I will find one I can hold and it will be fine but until then I will wait.

I've never handled a Spider Monkey but I'd like too. The 3.25" blade length is my sweet spot for EDC, so I really dig that. But I'm not a big fan of carbon fiber. I wish they offered other handle options. Didn't have any idea Bass Pro carries them. I looked online and it says they don't have any in stock at my store. Bummer. Hopefully they'll get one in and I can actually hold one in hand to see it for myself

I hate to hear this because you were definitely holding a dud. We have moved a lot of Spider Monkeys and sure we have seen the very occasional dud but it is as rare as it would be from any other well known mid tech knife company. This post makes me want to just ship you one so you can see what you missed by handling a very rare dud . Shame on Bass Pro for putting a bad example out on display.

I doubt they know the difference between a good and a bad one...

Yeah I hear way more positive things than bad. I am by no means bashing this knife and especially Southern Grind. I wish I had taken a picture of it. But I will echo what JSTRANGE said. The sales guy had zero clue about Southern Grind and who they are. So I am sure the folks at Bass Pro have no idea. I wanted to compare it to another one but that was the last one. But I have to admit it's still disheartening to pick one up and it's not what I was expecting. Obviously the one I got to see was an exception to quality so I want to see a good one..

Keep up the search. The Spider Monkey has become, almost without exception, one of my very favorite edc knives. I can't speak to quality issues, because mine is flawless. I have another coming this week. Excellent balance, weight, feel in the hand. Every company that makes or does anything will occasionally receive a complaint. Things happen. If you're really interested in the Monkey, make the effort to find one. It's worth it.

I definitely will keep looking! I like the design a lot.
