What Do You Think of BIG Folding Knives?

Ya'll should check out the Rajah! It's a BRUTE!
The Rajah looks nice, but CS put steel inserts in it. The Vaquero Grande has the same devastating blade style, yet they put it in a light Zytel frame and used a lock back design to keep the knife from closing. I don't know what they were thinking by making the Rajah so datgum heavy, but I wouldn't be able to carry such a thing. I'd have to wear a belt and suspenders to keep my pants up if I tried.

The Vaquero Grande is an awesome knife, and I hardly ever use the word "awesome." (It's gotten so that when one uses the word today, it's always a letdown. "Awesome" is Julie Numar in the 60s, or the tsunami in 2006. It is not a new cell phone or a photo of your guitar!) Anyway, the Vaquero's unique blade design makes any sort of contact, especially a slashing contact, extremely undesirable if you're a bad guy. It also makes clearing small areas in your garden a breeze, plus it's good for removing poison ivy.

Regarding the Buck 110, I find it easier to carry a Vaquero or Voyager. A Buck resides in a leather sheath and is heavy and doesn't open quickly. For my needs, I'd prefer a Voyager 4-incher to the Buck 110. If I were a hunter, I'd use the Alaskan, with an S30V blade.

Sometimes it helps to see the sheer size of the large Voyager. In many ways,
it's like having a fixed blade knife in one's pocket.

I carry my CS. 5" Voyager clipped in my jeans front pocket whenever I go out for dayhikes in the mountains or on the desert. (which is almost everyday)
I have found it to be one of my most useful knives. Besides being good for many practical applications (including light chopping), it is also a very effective weapon if I don't have the time to get the A1 (Fallkniven, not steak sauce) out of my pack.

My favorite big non auto folder is my Lone Wolf T3.
4 3/4 blade with false edge,1 1/4 wide.
Ultra smooth one hand opening with liner lock.

4" blade is ideal. I don't know why so few companies make 'em with that. 3" is just a bit too short.

i used to only edc large folders in the 5.5" range like the rekat sifu and cammilus cuda maxx, & the ralph maxx,& the crawford perfigo, but nowadays i have found that 4" or so is plenty big, i rarely carry my big folders anymore, just dont need it for what i carry a folder for.

Large folding knives are impractical for me.

First, state and city laws may or may not even make them legal to carry.

When does a pocket knife turn into a "deadly weapon"? Could I effectively argue in front a judge that a Cold Steel Vaquero Supersize Ultrahuge Mega Grande wasn't manufactured for offensive or defensive purposes? I don't know, but I'd prefer not to risk it.

Even if I was completely sure it was completely legal, it's still impractical.

Most of my pants have small pockets, and I carry a lot of junk in them. There isn't room for a pocket sword in them.

Also, I've had negative reactions when I've used my SAK (2.5" blade!) to cut things. I don't think things would go any better if I whipped out a folding machete.

My favorite blade length for a folding knife is 4". I loved my CS Gunsite II... and I've no idea where I lost it :( :o That said, I've been in the market for a new, large folder. I've yet to find the ideal, but hope remains high! ;)
My ideal daily carry is a stout folder with 4" blade and a slipjoint with a 3.5" handle when closed, such as a Case Mini-Trapper. Heck yeah!

I'm in law enforcement and I carried a 5 inch voyager for a number of years. I used it for everything from cutting fingerprint tape to chopping through brush to access otherwise difficult to access places. When the 6 inch X2 voyager came out, I had to have one! Its been my duty knife for about 5 years now, and I've had dozens of officers ask to look at and handle it. Several have purchased one for themselves. I used my X2 recently to punch through a suspects rear tire to prevent him from driving away (again!). It went through that tire like a hot knife through butter (pun intended : ).

Well put! I have similar reasoning.

Mostly though, I just don't do anything that requires a blade that large on a regular basis, so I can't justify lugging one around.

Of course, I can justify carrying 2 3" knives and a small SAK, but that's for the tools on the SAK, beating the heck out of one, and one for general use cutting.

I love big folders, the bigger the better!! But at some point they get kinda impractical...:D

I like big folders under certain situations. Generally speaking, I find that a small multi-tool is enough knife for almost any situation that I run into on a day to day basis.

That said, I bought a cold steel pocket bushman last month on a whim, and this 4.5" brute has seen more pocket time than any of my other knives. My job sometimes requires a knife that needs to be a little abused to get the job done. At 25 bucks and sporting a 4.5" blade and beefy lock, the PB is the perfect folding knife for my needs.

I still like to carry a skeletool or Native or SAK in my other pocket to use around customers or to do normal cutting chores, but PB rides just fine for a largish knife. Not the most comfortable in hand, but I can tear it up and not feel too bad about it...which is why I bought it to begin with:D

I'm not a big fan. A 110 is about is big as I like. In fact I even prefer small fixed blades to folders when possible. I will say the Cold Steel folding bushman interests me though.

I love big folders! My favorite producrions were the Camillus Madd Maxx (7") and REKAT SIFU. I'm not a big fane of the CS Voyager series. The Espada series looks interesting, but after playing with one at Blade, I don't like the cheap feel it has.

I am waiting to get the funds together to get my 9" Maxx from Darrel. That will satisfy my need for a big folder.

Don't forget the bog Navaja's you can find from time to time. Some of those are giants and really pretty cool.

What you do and where you are located (including local laws) has a lot to do with the feasibility of carrying a large folder. I've been carrying my full size Rukus for some time and find it quite comfortable (along with a Spyderco Military in my weak-side pocket).

When you need a fixed blade, but can't carry one, a large (well built) folder is a good option that can be carried with a much lower profile.

I'm not showing any of my large Cold Steel folders, however, their lockbacks are really well-built folders. Here's my original "mega-folder" the Al Mar SERE:

I love my Sog Spec Elite II. AUS-8 is decent steel for the price, their axis-style locks are fast and solid, and its a nice compact package for the blade it houses.

It's the largest folding knife I can rationalize carrying.

Not sure if this is a better picture, but it gives you another comparison shot:

thats a great pic!!! Exactly why I carry big folders cause for some reason a big folder doesn't get any looks unless its a 3inch "sheath" knife. Also got a military cause its a big folder but it just doesn't have the heft I was looking for. Try again.
