What Do You Think of BIG Folding Knives?

A 6" blade is tough enough to handle when it's fixed , putting it in a folder would probably make it too unstable to be worth a damn.

(Unless you're talking about kitchen work, but those don't look like kitchen knives to me!)

Just because someone can design it doesn't mean it's a good idea. ;)

I have an old United Cutlery folder, which is massive. The handle appears to be black bakelite, checkered except at the ends, and there are two blades, one a 'blade', and the other a saw. The knife must weigh a pound. Might someone tell me its provenance and age ? In total, it is approximately 6" long. I called United in FL and was told it must have been mfg by the previous United in TN, but on the blade is stamped United in MI. Very puzzling, indeed.

I prefer Ray Rogers big Chupacabra folders like the one in my Avatar.
It is an immensely strong built folder.
It has a 1/2" pivot, 4" long 3/16" thick S 30V blade, 3/16" thick Titanium slabs, and a liner lock that's made as it should be.
The Chupie weighs 12 to 14 oz depending on blade length.
Here's one beside a Strider folder to show the difference in size.

I like my BM 710. Thats about as big as Ill go. Seems like a normal sized knife in my hands. However, when my friend uses it, she looks like she is carrying a giant knife haha. I think a knife will look big if the person using it doesnt fit the blade. Im 6ft 2" and I never get odd looks with my knife. It just fits me I guess. I use it anywhere too, not just work.

I always have wondered why there are not more folders offered with 5-6 inch blades, given the competitive nature of the knife business these days. If you look around, there aren't really very many options. If I were in a jurisdiction that allowed it, I would consider a 5" bladed folder. Maybe there are so few such states that it isn't worthwhile for knife mfgs.

Many think a 4" blade on a folder makes it a BIG folder. I think it's getting there. I have several folders in this size, but none over 5". What do I think of them? I like them a lot, even the ones you see referred to as "overbuilt".

I would like to have a quality 5" knife like the CUDA Maxx. I would consider the Voyagers, but I'm looking for a bit more than Zytel® (I love that ® :D)

The largest folder I currently have is a Civilian. In the case of that knife, the whole "not carrying for defense" claim becomes a bit mute. Other than that one, almost all my folders are <3 inches. Part of it has to do with the balance and also the "fit" in my hand. The bigger knives just don't really do it for me. YMMV

I carried a Maxx for a good long while - the ideal SDSTNA knife. It's a full 5.5 inch blade. The blade itself is wonderful - D2, flat ground, perfect bowie shape. It flips like a dream and the frame lock is very solid, very trustworthy. The problem for me though was the handle shape - it just wasn't comfortable, and I didn't like the way it was identical whether right side up or upside down. You can "choke" way down on the handle and have a whole lot of reach, but in a normal sort of "up front" hold, the handle just didn't do it for me.

If it had a 5 inch or maybe 4.75 inch blade, but the exact same blade shape. and a handle like the Aftermath, it would be near perfect.

I just ordered some winewood scales for my Rukus - I'll post some photos after they come in.

It sounds like a great knife. I've only been in the cutlery scene for some 4 or 5 months now, so I missed out on a lot of the "good old" knives [I guess some of them would be the Sifu, Maxx, Goddard (although there's a sprint run), and recently the Manix (although there was recently a sprint run)].

I had a Remington piece of crap that I returned. The blade shape and handle was kinda similar to the Maxx (this wasn't the reason I got it; I found out about the similarities after the fact). I was able to kinda use the quillion as a Wave haha

Oh, well, maybe I'll be able to find one on ebay or something someday. It's a shame the company went out of business.

Until then, I'll be looking for an EDC + SDSTNA megafolder (right now I carry 2 - Delica for EDC, Ti-Lite for SDSTNA).

Hey, how about the Chinook III? I know it's not a megafolder, but do you think it serves EDC purposes well? I know it's designed around SD, but how does it hold up for day-to-day usage?

i like small to medium folders, if i need a larger blade, im sure that the purpose which requires it would dictate a fixed blade
any folder larger than 4 5 inches aint for my taste

Here is a photo of George's new folder design. It's Frame Lock with 3/16 x 4" blade, titanium & carbon fibre handle, weighs about 8 1/2 ozs.
