What Do You Think of BIG Folding Knives?

When does a pocket knife turn into a "deadly weapon"? Could I effectively argue in front a judge that a Cold Steel Vaquero Supersize Ultrahuge Mega Grande wasn't manufactured for offensive or defensive purposes? I don't know, but I'd prefer not to risk it.
The trick is not to be caught with it. And of course, if you can't carry it comfortably and discreetly, it's probably best not to carry it at all. Also, is you have any anger management issues or restraining orders against you, I'd stick to a Sebenza. If you can carry one responsibly and discreetly, the large Cold Steels are hard to beat. The 5-inch Gunsite is a fabulous knife. Many that have seen mine have also wanted one.

My favorite blade length for a folding knife is 4". I loved my CS Gunsite II... and I've no idea where I lost it ... I've been in the market for a new, large folder. I've yet to find the ideal, but hope remains high!
I'm not crazy about slipjoints. Like you, my preferred knife for running around is a 4-incher, though I think my little Spyderco Native also would do a great job on a tire, or anything else. Still, I always carry it as a backup. Try a 5-inch Gunsite, then, if you find your other, you'll be just that much more well off.

I also have a switchblade made in Italy, and it has a 9-inch blade. Totally impractical, but an impressive knife. It reminds me of that BIG KNIFE photo above. (Was that done with Photoshop or does someone make such a thing?)

I love my Skirmish. It seems like a perfect length, not too big or too small. The Cuda Maxx 5.5 has a fantastic blade, but the handle shape leaves a lot to be desired. The Hossums look great but I'm betting they're too wide for pocket carry. That Skirmish though... it's very flat, and carries like a much smaller knife. I'll always carry a larger knife than a smaller one. The cuda Dominator, for instance, is a very good knife, but it just seems so... small.

Rock6- what's the 4th one from the right (the micarta one with the square blade hole)?

I love big folders…*but 5.5 Cuda seems a bit over the top
4.5" is about right

That's Ontario's production run of Jerry Hossom's Retribution folder. It's a monster...no clip, VERY full grip...you need a belt sheath for it. The locking liner is thicker than most knife blades; very beefy.

I'm suprised not to see the Mission Knives in A2.

I looked/handled one and thought it was dandy (not enough funds that day, so the knife didn't grace my collection).

I have a great affinity for that knife. It does open easily with a commanding snap to it, while my little 3-inch Voyagers don't open with a flick at all. It's manual all the way. I also love both the plain and serrated versions and have both. I have a Gunsite 5-incher packed away in my bug-out bag, but last night I found a brand new one down in my box that I had forgotten about, so I'll be carrying that a bit.

A 4-inch knife is something I could easily live with, especially the Voyager series. Still, occasionally carrying a 5- or 6-inch makes an evening walk or a hike in a remote area just a bit more comforting.

The Cold Steel Gunsite is a popular knife in both
4- and 5-inch configurations.

 What great usage of grammar rules. Quite off topic, but I've never seen anyone on a forum but myself do that properly.

I have been carrying a large locking folder of one kind or another since the mid 1970's.

Buck's 110, the old Gerber Folding Sportsman, and Spyderco's Police Model are all classic, useful designs.

The Spyderco Endura and the recently discontinued Kriss and Manix are also stout and very well made examples of a large "working" locking folder.

I like 'em, and would not be without one. Why? A large, well made knife can do a great many things that a small, well made knife cannot.

My two cents......

What you do and where you are located (including local laws) has a lot to do with the feasibility of carrying a large folder. I've been carrying my full size Rukus for some time and find it quite comfortable (along with a Spyderco Military in my weak-side pocket).

When you need a fixed blade, but can't carry one, a large (well built) folder is a good option that can be carried with a much lower profile.

I'm not showing any of my large Cold Steel folders, however, their lockbacks are really well-built folders. Here's my original "mega-folder" the Al Mar SERE:

Rock6,

How do you rate that Harsey T3 compared to your BM Rukus and Ontario Hossom?
I understand that the T3 is a not so well finished? (screws that you can see trough the handle etc)

Thanks,
CZ

Chinook is as big as I would go. Anything over 4" deserves to be a fixed-blade & full-tang for strength for me..

I like to carry a big folder when I am doing some long distance driving. Especially on my recent sojourn to Alaska.

Around the 4" blade is about the largest I'd bother to carry.

Anything bigger is often awkward and unwieldy...or you run into the issue of how to carry the thing. At that point, a decent suitable fixed blade might just feel more comfortable.

Larger than 4 inch? That is when I start considering a fixed blade. Actually I prefer a blade smaller than 4 inch.

For me a folder should be small and convenient. I often carry a Delica, Centofante or Calypso and not my Endura (all Spyderco).

Knife laws are of course an issue, depending on location.

I must admit though that the Cold Steel Voyager in 5 inch is pretty impressive.
