Hi all I just finshed this knife tonight and thought I would see what you guys and gals think.
It is made out of 0-1 steel and has a 6" long by 1/8" thick and is 1.125" wide blade and has a 4.5" handle that has Osage wood with white liners for handle slabs. In the last few weeks I have been thinking ( I can just hear some of you thinking that is not good LOL )about Two knives that I saw and read about First how many of you have seen the movie called Heavan Knows Mr. Allison that stars Robert mitchum? In the movie he plays a Marine that is in WWII and floats to an island in a rubber boat after he and his team are about to make a recon beach landing when there sub takes fire from the Japs
Well after the bombs go off he is the only one that gets into a rubber raft and floats away in the comotion and the subs takes off and dives leaving the Marines on top and on there own. Well he floats to an island where he survives with you got it a knife called the kabar. he hunts, fishes and kills a jap soldier with his knife. meets a nun of all things. I thought it was a neat show. man vs. the wild with just his knife Right LOL

Now to the story how many of you have read the Brian Books by Gary Paulson like Hatchet and Brian's winter and Brian's return and Brian's hunt
Well in the books Brian return and the Hunt it talks about the knife that Gary
Paulson gives the charcater Brian on pg 52 ( of Brian's return) in the paper back version it says that his knife has a 6" long straight back blade and on page 22 of the ( Brian's hunt) it says that his knife had a straight-edge hunting knife and it was always on his belt ----almost a copy of the Second World War Marine Corps - issue knife calle the k-bars.
Hear again just one knife. not a pocket knife and the chopper and all the other combos that we talk about and carry.
ONE KNIFE.

This is what the author has his character using and if you ever read any thing else by Gary he( Gary) lived a life of hunting and trapping in his youth.
But this struck me as kind of odd before Rambo most carried a small knife and hatchet right well not all Jeramiah Johnson carried a 11" bladed knife that was almost 3/8" thick that is a lot of knife.
anyways you get the point.

Now back to the peace maker knife after watching the show and reading the book I thought to my self I am going to make a knife that would work for the soldier and the hunter Being a former Marine and a hunter I have an idea on what I thought would might work and so I started drawing on paper and came up with this, a 6" long by 1/8" thick and by 1.125" wide and with a 4.5" handle ( I made up two one with a 5/32" thick blade every thing else the same.)

Does the one knife sitution have merrit ? I think it does how many people up and just left there homes when the russians attacked Goergia. with what was on ther belts and the clothes on there backs.
I personaly in the first gulf war got tangled in razor ribbon wire and had to leave my pack in there till the shooting was done all I had was the clothes on my back, my rifle, one mag, and you guessed it my fixed blade knife and a small survival pouch that was always on my belt. I was able to go back and get my harness with extra mags and canteens and that stuff.
I was chatting with Jerry Van Cook a few days back and he told me a story of a DEA agent south of the border that he knows who had his gun jam and
had to use his knife to kill the guy. it happens that fast some times.

Now to the pics this is what I came up with for the possible one knife crap hit the fan type thing. What do you think?

In this pic I have the two knives together.

I am planning on making one with a 5" blade for the kitchen and 3 with 4" blades for my survival kits that I have in several places.
This is the pouch that I have my survival kit in

This is what I put in the pouch, as soon as the 3 Peace Maker Knives are made and get the kydex pants from Jeff H I will be replacing the rat-3 with them in the three kits that I have made up,one to keep in the truck, car and right by the door as I leave the house. just to even go for a walk with kelly girl who thinks she is a cow some times. LOL
Several kits

Well what do you think of the Peace Makers? Also here is how I came up with the name for this knife after I had made the first one I just felt at peace
I know that sounds nutty but that is the way it happened. So hence the name Peace Maker.

Take care all,
Bryan

WOW Thats a awesome looking knife. Ive read all the Gary Paulsen books about brian

Dang, if'n Mr. Allison had himself both o' these badboys he'da done for a whole platoon of them varmints.

Nice knife. Personally, I prefer a little less belly at the forward end and a little pointier point. Still, a nice clean design. I also like the orange scales.

Bryan,
That is a real nice first picture there. I didn't know you are making osage handles! Where are the Handy Little Knife pictures?

I also like Kelly Cow.

They remind me of a mini-machete. Cool, well thought out design. A good tool for outside or in the kitchen. I think the 1/8" would make for a fast knife that could still get the job done unless you were chopping bricks for a garden path. I also like the white liners.

The pouches are a great idea as well. One at hand for every occasion. Always be prepared.

Brian, that is a very classic looking knife with clean lines. The Osage gives it a more traditional look that really works with the blade + handle style. Both the blade length, thickness and handle look very practical and are not hindered by guards common in military knives. I really like it. The kind of knife I could see myself carrying and using quite a bit.

The wood looks great and I think this is an interesting new material for you to work with. A small comment, but based on your 2nd picture, the forward (blade facing) part of the slab looks like it could be rounded slightly for more comfort, just at the corner there. I was really impressed earlier this week with your G10 peacmaker but seeing that osage give this knife an even more refined look to it.

Great Job!

Simple is beautiful. . .
Simple is timeless. . .
Simple WORKS!

I'm really lovin that osage one!

From what Ive seen and understand the old frontiersmen and trappers usually carried a large butcher type knife and thats what these remind me of. Funny how functionality never really changes..Cool knives--KV

I like it, clean and simple, the way a using knife should be.
Also remember the movie from when I was young, a classic!

Bryan, I think you may be on to something here. I personally love this blade and I find myself gravitating towards a bigger fixed blade. In all honesty when I'm out in the mountains I use a folder or slipjoint for about 90% of what I do. I do however use a larger blade for larger tasks mainly wood/battoning for making kindling. I feel at ease with a larger knife by my side (a good conection also with your name the peace maker). I rarely make anything bushcrafty other than just whittle some wood.

Have you ever put any consideration into making something along the lines of 10" blade?

Overall I think this would suit all the tasks you mentioned above. Great work on this one!

Very nice work Bryan. Those white liners look great with the osage.
