What do you use as a MAN PURSE?

I use a Wenger Swissgear messenger bag for school stuff, and in general. My general rule: it must be not be smaller than the size of a laptop. If it is, it will start to be misconstrued as a real purse instead of a Murse as I call it.

...but what I carry more often is literally half the size (and doesn't tempt me to overload), which is the County Comm Bailout Bag.

The main compartment has a velcro-adjustable divider but the big deal with the pockets is, they're on the outside, 8 of them, and a few pen slots, too. Great access to everything without having to root around in the bottom of ... a purse. :p

It took me a few minutes to sew on two D-rings which enable me to convert it from a shoulder bag to a backpack whenever I like.

DING, DING! We have a winner! Dude, that's perfect! I'm ordering one tomorrow. Thanks!

Another vote for http://www.timbuk2.com
I use a medium sized one (custom made) and its great. It holds several textbooks, my cameras (nikon f80 and a sony digital) and it has compartments where i keep a few pens, highlighter, a bandaid dispenser from NGK and a knife (whatever i happen to throw in there). I also keep a PDA, 10feet of para cord (you never know when u need to tie something/someone up:D;) ) and i still have room for a sweater or light jacket. check one out

I hope you like it. If I didn't have one, I'd order one now because they did seem to have improved it a bit. I can give you easy instructions on the backpack mode.

Maxpedition Devildog for me, in black. Though it can look "terribly tactical", so I kinda wish Id bought it in khaki. Oh, well.
I tuck the belt in behind the tunnel-type back panel & use it as a shoulder bag. Carries a variety of odds & sods such as SAS tin, overnight toiletries in small plastic case, nite-palm flashlight, cpl of snaplights, Ti spork, SAK Handyman, Sigg-ish waterbottle, small umbrella, car stereo faceplate & remote, mobile phone, monocular & any other "mission specific":D items that I might need that day.

Yeah, interested in that too. Where do you get D-rings?

I use a plastic bag as my man purse. Carry my lunch in there, sometimes a magazine or book. I used to carry a briefcase, but I really have no need for one.

I have the small Filson, had and sold a Maxpedition veripack. I just can't get over feeling self-conscious about carrying one. The only thing I can carry with no problem is my old GI butt pack. The canvas version. No pockets and not a lot of room. I stuck a compass case(?) on the grab strap for an outside pocket and attached a canvas strap. Old school;)

I ordered that Bailout Bag.

The brown one looked higher-quality and had seams sewn around the pockets and was $35.

The black one didn't have the extra stitching around the pockets and was $40.

I got the brown one.

They did upgrade a bit, and lowered the price, too. Crazy. But it was a special order for them, so I guess they got their money already, and are just selling off the excess fast.

D-rings should be available at outdoor supply places like EMS or REI. They sell those plastic buckles and adjusters and snaps. I got mine off old backpacks. :)

You see the long pocket on the bottom in the back? I sewed the D-rings on the ends of that pocket but on top, lying flat against the back. Now I can open up the strap full-length, clip it to one D-ring, run it through the carry handles and down to clip it to the other D-ring.

It works better than most briecase/backpacks because it carries high and it stays horizontal.

That's slick. What did you use for canvas to make the loops for the D-rings?

They were actually sewn into the ends of nylon straps. But I cut them free, and sewed them directly to the bag.

Except for all that damned velcro. Give me snaps, buttons, zippers -- anything but flipping velcro. :grumpy:

For some purposes, I agree with you. On this bag, where access is the key to its usefulness, velcro works just fine.

By the way, FOL, when I counted the pockets, I missed 2. One of the front flaps actually hides 2 small pockets, each ideal for a SAK-sized item.

And the whole front is a hidden pocket accessed by a velcro strip that goes completely across.

I think they designated this for a "hidden" handgun. Considering how they market this to the security community, I don't know how hidden that would be.

It's a little pricey, but I have a basic Bailey Works messenger bag to carry my shit around. http://www.baileyworks.com

It's great and takes a beating like NO other.

I used to have the Da Kine HeliPak... worked great as a small pack, but it had too many lashes and tiedowns that easily could get caught on shit in an urban environment.

Man Purse? I make a bag from the skin of my vanquished enemies!

Actually, if I don't carry my brief case, I generally make do with my pockets. I did use an Everest day pack, but then I just filled it with stuff and its my truck BOB. If I'm travelling, I've got this little passport\ticket thing that can hang around my neck. It doesn't hold much, but paperwork and pen, etc.
