I was just curious what ya'll use to cover your melon when you're out an about. I like the traditional boonie hat. Like most of us, I like for an item to do more than what it was intended to do, and boy howdy does the boonie fit the bill (pun intended). I was thinking about all the different things I've done with a boonie, I have shaved out of it, collected water in it, used it for a basket when gathering "stuff". My daughters used them for Easter Egg hunts once, grabbed hot metal stuff off the fire with it (after soaking it down). And I wear it on my head to keep the sun and rain off my face and neck. I can deal with rain fine, but I have this thing about it hitting me in the face. I have about a dozen floating around here that are mine, my Lady has 2 or 3, and my girls have a couple (pink camo). My fav is an OD Propper I got years ago. I have a couple that have cool stories, like my ACU digital that came back from Afganistink, a woodland camo one that I found in the middle of the road one day, while I was thinking about buying a woodland camo boonie. It was even my size. I have others, but mostly just so I have one with me. My ACU one stays folded and stuffed in my EDC BOB, and my OD one usually gets worn daily. So, enough of that, what do you use to cover your melon?

Thanks to all. Moose

I heart my Tilley!

I am bald and have to cover it or it burns quickly in the summer and gets cold quickly in the winter. Last couple of summers its been a Columbia boonie

Obviously a gift from God...

I've just gotten around to boonies. My fave happens to be an issue woodland. I've mostly been an unstructured baseball cap person. I'm the same with rain. I don't mind it if I have a brim. I like a ball cap with a rain hood which is where I go back and forth on bonnies or ball cap. And if you don't use your hood, if fills with rain.

A "Tactical" Boonie, (short brim) for general outdoors, until it gets cold, then a standard wool beanie for the cold months. I spend a lot of time in a van transiting from one city to another, so I wear a wide rim Boonie for the illusion of privacy while I nap during transit.

Boonie all the way! I also love my OD propper. Your woodland camo storie is funny. I have about half dozen stashed strategically around as well. We can all start our own boonie brotherhood club now...or not! Lol. Wife makes fun of them but my 4 year old has one and loves being like dad, for now anyway.

Something else I like to do, I'm paranoid, so when we go to the lake or the river, I always sink in up to my chin and pretend to be a lilly pad. HA! Take that snooping satellites!! LOL. :D Moose

I like a boonie hat, and have several. I also like a big billed ball cap with a sun flap for the neck.

I judt plain like hats...
this has been my fav of late (a gift from my brother) I am a little self concious when I wear it though

I graduated from a boonie to the Kakadu Traders Stockman. I've got the sun flap built in (long hair has practical applications too)

I have an REI rain boonie hat that is great for cool wet weather and a Filson scull cap for the winter, other than that I tend to not wear a hat but occasionally wear a ball cap.

being a chromus domus, i've learnt to cover mah bonce from the harsh australian sunshine.

often with one of these:

the advantage of the mesh sides is that it won't blow off until you're standing in a hurricane.

akubra for light stuff
tilley hemp for overnight or water stuff
i got the hemp th5 with the shorter brim

Tilley T3, GI Boonie, Carahart's watch cap, Buff.

since i've gotten the Tilley, the GI boonies haven't gotten much use. even if i'm wearing the Tilley, there's usually a watch cap and Buff in my pack, even in the summer due to the large temp fluctuation we get here.

i have a hemp T4 that i need to unload because it's jst too much brim for me, and get a second T3 in some other color besides white.
