What do you use to cover your melon?

A buff, Patagonia Boonie, Military style cadet caps, wool Kangol, various beanies in the winter, my favorite being a smartwool one.

But my all time favorite hat is my Puma khaki unstructured ball cap. Its been everywhere with me, and had the frays and stains to prove it lol....My wife wont go near it.

Probably time to retire it, but I cant find one I like as much.....yet.

for three seasons it's my Stetson Open Road- enough brim to block sun/rain, but not enough to get in the way

stays relatively cool in the heat (I wore in 100+ degree weather backpacking in NM) but adds some warmth when things cool

I always have a light wool hat (Smartwool) w/ me- regardless of weather

in the winter the light wool hat is worn and a heavier wool balaclava is carried

I'm a big hat guy with lots of them. If around town it is usually a Tilley or REI copy. If in the woods hunting or playing then its my Tarp hat.

On day hikes, unless it's really hot I wear a Bamboo Clery cap from Kangol. For longer outings, I like to switch to a cap with a brim - my girlfriend calls it my Castro hat. In the winter, I wear a toque.

All the best,

- Mike

Earthtone hunting-style baseball cap. The protection is minimalistic, but it works for me.

-variety of unstructured caps from thin freebies to water resistant Orvis oilskin
-Coolmax buffs
-Columbia Bora Bora boonie hat
-UnderArmour Arctic beanie(not a big UA fan, but their beanies are fantastic)
Thought the buffs were silly before actually trying them, but now I don't know how I lived without them. Wear one under my hardhat at work, and another when rock climbing. Gonna have to try a merino wool version when it cools off.

I mostly wear ball caps. I just feel the most comfortable in them I guess.

If i were a moderator on this forum I would be SORELY tempted to add an additional S to the end of this thread's title. jut sayin.

I wear one of three: a water-resistant Filson cap with quilted lining and fold-down wool back and sides; a Scarpa wool fedora (Indiana Jones style) that stays warm when it's cold, cool when it's hot, keeps the sun and rain off, and even stays on my head when it's windy; and a Smartwool watch cap, rolled up in my bag. That seems to cover most situations.

When in tree cover, I opt for a bandana. In direct light, one of my Tilleys. I like the hemp one for dry conditions and the Air-flo waterproof version for wet weather (Just don't wear it near a fire, I melted my first one).

Recently picked up an Eddie Bauer waxed canvas fedora that I'm pretty happy with. Have a few military style caps I'll use on occasion.

I like broad brims.

Straw works best for me in hot weather.

I like fur or felt in colder conditions.

My Tilly Hemp is used in wet or windy conditions.

Bonus Question: What do my two photos have in common?

Ok, now you got me looking REAL hard at the Real Deal Tarp Hat. Too hard in fact. I think I'm gonna order one.

Big Mike, your baldric carry system? Leather from right to left, cord and braid left to right? Moose
