What do you use to cover your melon?

been a stormy kromer fan since my pops gave me one when i was a younger
(he finally bought a new one and gave me the one i "stole" from him every time we went out in the woods-
it was waaaay too big but it was my pops and i loved that hat.
a few yrs later he bought me one my size)
cotton in the summer(if i wear one at all)
waxed cotton when its raining
wool in the winter

Another vote for the Real Deal Brazil canvas tarp hat. I love mine. I have boonies and ball caps but the RDB is usually the one I grab going out the door. Plus, I loved the movie Zombieland. I laughed all the way thru it. On really hot days, I wear a wet bandanna on my head to keep cool and the RDB on top of that to keep it from evaporating too quickly. Works great in out low humidity environment. In the winter I go with the standart knit wool hat.

Bonus Question: What do my two photos have in common?

gonna have to say the two knives on the left in the first pic, which are presumably barkies, but i'm not sure what models.

well, there's also your mug.

Big Mike, your baldric carry system? Leather from right to left, cord and braid left to right? Moose

Wow, ...even though the photos where taken several years apart, you are correct; my Sharpshooter Baldric Rig and my two dog leads are always there.

Both photos feature Koyote Custom Combos.

In the Tilly photo I'm weilding Tony's Combo.

The ones you mention are a newer Combo that Christof crafted for me.

And to stay on topic: Koyote Combo shown with felt hat.

For short walks on sunny and mild days, I have a couple of leather cowboy hats that keep the sun out of my face. I bring a boonie I found at the magic thrift store and a bandanna for overnights and on really hot days. For this time of year, a light knit cap is perfect. As it starts to get really cold, I switch to one of my fur-lined trapper hats.

I love my Real Deal Brazil hat!

WANT!

I always wear a boonie. A couple years back I bought a Filson tin cloth bush hat and that thing is a head oven! I can only wear it in cooler weather, but I need something for the scorching sun. I am definitely getting one of the Real Deals!

Cammo baseball cap in hot weather, Tilley in the rain and Stormy Kromer in cold weather.

definitely a boonie when fishing or camping...otherwise i wear classic panamas or a baseball cap...lately i've been wearing a very short brim straw derby-style hat...

I was just curious what ya'll use to cover your melon when you're out an about. I like the traditional boonie hat......So, enough of that, what do you use to cover your melon?

Thanks to all. Moose

I'm with you on the boonie hat. I have a desert camo one that works great in the summer.

In the rain I have an OR Seattle Sombrero that works exceptionally well. For cutting firewood, shooting, or doing other loud activities I wear a baseball cap so my hearing protectors can go over it.

I learned a long time ago while surveying in Southern California that I did NOT like being in the sun without good sunglasses and a good hat. The boonie is excellent because it gives protection from the sides, as well as in front. I would like to check into a Tilley or similar ventilated hat one of these days, because my boonie soaks up a lot of sweat when it's hot.

I guess you should have asked "What do you use to cover your melon in a wilderness and survival situation?"

I have a warm hat question for any guys with oversized noggins.

I seem to have a larger-than-normal melon, and have a tough time finding hats to fit. Beanies are the worst -- one size definitely does NOT fit all.:grumpy:

I currently use a Carhartt beanie for cooler temps, but it's not very wind proof.

Does anyone know of a good warm hat, with or without ear flaps, of a beanie type? I need something for when the temps get down to 0°F or so, with wind.

Standing by the side of the road waiting to load a kid on the school bus gets pretty brutal. Kids are buttoned to their eyes with winter clothes, but I just don't have the proper gear that fits.

I wear a Pirates baseball hat.

I'm curious, do all the people that wear booney hats where them everywhere? Walking around, going to work, or just out in the woods.

Eventho I'm 56 years OLD, I still cover MY melon with my full head of hair.:D.

I never really liked wearing hats before. But now that I'm becoming follically challenged, and a hat has become a necessity, I've grown to love my Tilly TM10.

You've got a problem here if you wear size 8 or larger. I don't really have an answer, but this is what I know.

Get someone with good crotchet skills to make you a big knit tam.

The only good ready-made hats I know of in these sizes are Hoguy, Borsalino and Tilley.

Hoguy makes berets, you can check them out here:

Borsalino makes snap brims:

Tilley makes a soft shell winter hat with a fleece liner and earwarmers, and that looks the closest to what you want:

Go to a country where people have long Mediterranean heads, dreadlocks or big afros, and you will have more options.

I'm not a hat person because I think I look goofy in one. But if I actually need to wear a hat (out fishing or hiking) I just wear an old, black Atlanta Braves hat that was a freebie at Turner Field twelve or so years ago.

Keeps the sun out of my eyes... that's all I really care about.

When I was much younger my thick head of hair was all I needed to protect me from the elements. But now, decades later, that we are experiencing both global warming and the mini-ice-age at the same time, (depending who you listen to), I find that my prodigious hirsuteness and the pride of my family can sometimes benefit from being supplemented by a well-chosen chapeau during the most extreme conditions. I prefer a baseball cap during the summer, but wear a Tilley T-3 while fishing on the Chesapeake Bay because it floats and I can snap up the brim on one side - Aussie style - great in the wind while trolling for gamefish. In the winter, I wear a Donegal Tweed flat cap or walking hat as a nod to my departed and sainted forebears in the Old Country.
