If you guys find me chewed up on some back trail in the woods with a broken bloody hawk handle nearby just quote me on my tombstone "I wish I'd gotten my hawk Vectorized"!

Members, could we start a topic by those who know best ,on how to pick the best, belt grinders/sharpener ,How to use them, how to pick hawk hafts/handles,and mount them, sheath making, picking a forge and using it, and hawk decorating , as we have now on cpl punishment, CS hawk mods, which is one of my favorite topic? This should help most of us get the big picture of the art and kraft ,and give us a how too on what it takes to make a good hawk with accessories ,and keep it all in under one topic so it can be easy found?

Will members, if they have time draw or post pictures, of what they consenter the best hawk head designs for Utility, CQC and Throwing ?

Cpl punishment, Will you tell us more ? why you picked INFI, what metal to keep away from ,and give us comments on hawk prices made from the best metal ?

Because INFI embodies the best all-round performance in taking an edge, holding an edge, and absolute toughness. It's also Jerry Busse's proprietary metal, he has is specially made, and he says it costs too much to make thick billets of it to make a traditionally eyed hawk, versus a slab side "tactical" hawk.

I'm no hawk maker, let me be very clear on that. I am a tool & die maker, so, as far as steels go, I'd stick to tough steels. One reason I'd really like to see one of 5160 spring steel -- IMO it's about as close to INFI as you can get without being INFI. I can also get 5160 blades sharper than any other blades I have. Other steels would be other 51 series steel, 52100 ball bearing steel, S7, lower carbon 10-series (like 1060 or below), or a hybrid, like Fort Turner's 1095 bit forge welded into a 1040 body.

As far as I'm concerned, for striking tools like hammers, axes, chisels, hawks, etc, toughness will be the last thing I'll sacrifice. I can do without great edge retention -- I can always re sharpen -- but if it's not tough and cracks or chips, that sucks.

I have some ideas I want to put to paper for a custom, but haven't gotten to, yet.

IMO the best basic utility and fighting design is a bearded head with a short (i.e. doesn't project far from the poll) hammer face on the back.

For an example, look at the Fort Turner Iroqois hawk(D):

and add the hammer face from the Camp hawk:

I don't throw, but I suspect taking a Norse type head and putting a spike on the back, like a battle axe, would give the most points for a stick.

For something specialized like digging or climbing, a hooked spike like on the new CS Spike Hawk would prove very useful.

Punishment, HB Forge has what you're looking for- a very nice wide Norse Hawk with a functional chisel ground spike. I think they sell the head alone but they also sell 2 different haft sizes so you can purchase the length you are looking for.

I agree 100% with your idea for your custom hawk. I've been looking for one just as you described with a 24 inch haft but haven't been able to find it. I feel that design would be very useful in a utility role or if needed, in a defensive role.

By the way how much did the all black vec hawk run you and how long did it take from order date to "in hand"?

that last post was meant for Cpl_Punishment. Commenting on post #42 and #54. sorry about my lack of exp on the forum, still rather new at posting.

Actually, the hammer polled Iroquois style I already have, I ordered it custom from Fort Turner.

The black Vec hawk, I think, was $200. And I grabbed it as an IGH (Instant Gratification Hawk), i.e. one he had for sale.

However, I've been hitting him up for a Vectorized War Hammer for a long, long time now. ;)

I have a spontoon type hawk I got from my father years ago. I will try to dig a pic. I love that both sides of the blade is sharpened.
