What do you want?

Or.... I should have said;
What knife handle woods do you want but can't find?

I have fun searching for and finding unusual woods for knife handle materials.
Most of the regular woods can be gotten from a number of handle material suppliers.
I am curious if there is something you have seen or used in the past that you just can not find anymore.

For the new year I am going to be changing direction a bit and will try to focus on getting the nicest and most unusual woods that I can find.
I will continue with some of the more common woods like Maple and Redwood but will be leaning toward only the best figure and most unusual looking pieces I can find. I will also keep getting and stabilizing Bog Oak, Koa and Mango as long as I can get the really good quality figured stuff. I doubt I will be getting Ironwood Burl because I get annoyed by the checks and voids. Same thing with the Australian hardwood burls.

I am actively searching for sources of high grade Rosewood burl, Xlay figured Afzelia and Nutmeg burl. And.....any woods with small and bold pommelle figure (looks like bubble wrap). If anyone knows of wholesale sources for any of these please let me know. If it works out I will share in the bounty. Example: a while back one of the forum members spotted a very good old rosewood burl for sale. I sent him the best block from the burl as a thank you.

I could also use a bit of help from those of you in Central and South America. There are a lot of great woods there but I don't know the local names or where to buy the woods. So any help is appreciated. Same thing with Asian woods.

Are there any Hawiian woods other than Koa, Mango and Silky Oak that you like?
I was talking to a Hawaiian mill owner yesterday who will be a good source for obscure stuff.
With me not knowing the names of a lot of the different woods in Hawaii, I told him I wanted wood with a lot of dramatic figure in a small area.

Some nicely figured black ash burl, stabilized of course, is what I would really like to have right now Mark. Perhaps I missed it, but I don't recall ever seeing any available from you. Think you could get some?

I don't see a lot of curly or figured mahogany/sapeale. I would really like a stash of these woods.

How about some stabilized holly? I've always been wanting to try something like it. Not sure if it would be a popular choice though.

Ive been using purpleheart. I, too, would love a small stash of random hardwoods. Local lumberyard has wonderful stuff, but they won't sell small batches of anything.

That rosewood burl you just had sold too quickly for me to jump on it. I'd like to get my hands on some if you get more. In the complete opposite direction of interesting grain patterns, I would like to see some more stabilized ebony or blackwood. The blacker the better.
Thanks for asking, I'll be looking forward to the new stock.

More rosewood and in larger pieces!!!! That stuff is arguably BETTER than ironwood. Also, if you could find some of the unobtanium HIGHLY figured cocobolo that shows up every 10 yeas or so, we would appreciate it. ;) As for other stuff, the woods that you have been selling like amboyna and loa are good. The redwood looks nice, but the one piece that i used required a bit of working around a soft spot. As for blackwood, UNstabilized, super black instrument grade stuff is the ticket for me!!

I would like to see some stabilized teak - looks nice, easy to care for, not too expensive.

Australian Blackwood and Forest Red Gum?

I like the curly stuff, like musical grade Curley Mahogany. I also like the oak burls and you have already mentioned the xlay. I also like stabilized blackwood and the golden amboyna.

I will send you a PM about wood suppliers.

I'd like to see some very tight grained/dense/colorful Circassian Walnut...lots of activity.

Love the stuff.

Man, I've never even heard of most of these exotics you guys are talking about. The steel I ordered is probably too big for the carving knives I intended to use it for so I'm going to try my hand at some b&t's. Looking forward to seeing your new stock in the coming year.

You're doing a great job Mark! But since you asked...I would like to see some figured Olive wood.

You've got your work cut out for you, Mark.
Good job on stepping up.
I remember that material in Nick's knife. Pretty cool, indeed.
I will second Joe's comment on cocobolo /figured/burl.
As well, I'm a huge fan of stabilized and as highly figured as possible Bubinga. Just a real joy to work with.

Mark- Just keep doing what you're doing my friend!

I got this curly Mahogany from Mark a few years ago... very pretty wood, I love it.

I remember finding that post when looking for curly mahogany. In my old house my cabinets were made from sapele. I loved the mesmerizing chatoyance as I made my coffee in the morning. I have Zebrano in my current house, and while more exotic, I prefer the sapele for its warmth.
