What does Like New in Box Mean?

Um, if you carry and use it, the damn thing cannot be described as like new in box.

Seems people need to drop the terms and describe what they have done with the knife. Just because of this thread we have outed a guy breaking in and taking apart the knife but thinking it is LNIB. Now this guy carrying and using the knife and calling it LNIB. Are people taking crazy pills?
Um everyone’s discription or interpretation of as LNIB is that’s persons opinion. Mine as I stated is LNIB is one that shows no sign of use and could be sold as like new in the box.
My almost 300 sales and purchases of 100% positive feed reflects my accurate descriptions.
So as you say put the prescription bottle down before you start condemning all that use that description of LNIB.

"Like new" should be flawless.
More than that, it should not be put into a position where flaws are likely to occur.

Like it or not, carrying a knife or opening an envelope does degrade the material of a knife. Once that edge cuts something it is no longer as sharp as it was new from the box. It can't be like new, ever.

Personal insults aren't needed here brother.

There can be no argument for a knife carried and used to be described as like new. Sorry, you are wrong.

The factory edge will vary from knife to knife from the factory.
Just saying …
One might have opened a TV dinner box and still be sharper then another from the factory that has cut nothing .

Please dont throw rocks when you live in a glass house brother . You are insulting those that use LNIB as a description of there knife when everyone’s opinion of such will vary .

Everyone is thinking the same about you after you say lnib means carrying and using the knife. I mean this other guy is joking, were you?
Have a great day :)
My 100% positive feed over the that last 6 years or so begs to differ with you again ;)

Well folks I will graciously unsubscribe from this thread before it takes a turn for the worst .
Again I respect all opinions on the matter.
Well almost all :)

Francis-

Have you ever walked up to a stack of newspapers and the one on top has been read by someone and then folded back up and put back on the top of the stack? Instinctively, without thinking about it, I will reach down and take a “fresh” “new” copy from the middle of the stack. The news inside the paper is the same, but the experience is somehow different. Perhaps some knife collectors are equally fastidious (OCD).

I also don’t like buying a “new” pair of shoes from the store when they are obviously returns.

When opening a GEC tube direct from the dealer, the brown paper is fresh and unfolded. Once that paper has ben unfolded and refolded a time or two or six, it is not the same experience and the brown paper resembles an old Kleenex. The actual knife inside however may be “as new”. The overall experience however is different. If I am just going to keep the knife as a “user” it doesn’t matter to me. If I am collecting then it may.

Throughout history the person promoting the product will tend to oversell and the person buying the product will tend to over scrutinize.

In summary descriptions can/should be taken with a grain of salt and used as a staring point.

I did no such thing. You're just mad at being called out for your inaccurate sales descriptions. I am sorry that the truth can be frustrating at times. Try looking at what everyone here is saying without the emotion.

Wishing all a good day 👍🏻

One factory edge to another is not what we are comparing. A used knife and an unused knife is what we are comparing. A knife that has been used cannot be like new. The definition of words matter here. Used, by definition, is not new.

At least to some....

Like new in box means it was taken out of the box very briefly (think photos) to me. It didn't cut paper. It wasn't carried. It wasn't used as a fidget spinner. That's a used knife.

What happens is sellers straight lie through their teeth to make their item seem better. Like new in box is easier to sell than only cut 12 pieces of cardboard and flipped for a week.

Exactly. LIke if wanted to put a bunch of pictures in the EDC thread and then put the knife/box back in the safe.

You've got to be kidding me....6 pages and this thread is still going? This should have been the shortest thread in BF history. There should have only been one reply in this thread that everyone agrees is the definition of LNIB.

Since I was far from the first to respond, I will make that ONE post right now of what LNIB is, and if you disagree - you are simply wrong:

- You haven't cleaned it
- You haven't disassembled it
- You haven't lubed it
- You haven't cut anything with it. NOTHING
- You have all the original paperwork, box, etc.
- You haven't carried it
- You have opened it GENTLY once or maybe twice. And that's a BIG maybe on the "twice".
- You haven't sharpened it
- You haven't polished/wiped it down, except once to remove your grubby fingerprints from the time you opened it ONE time.

Hell, even if you held it and only stared at it for an extended period of time, I would question "LNIB". :)

Most BNIB listings won't meet your criteria , let alone LNIB . ( at least on FleaBay )

Unless it's actually factory sealed or I really trust the seller , I'm always suspect .
