What draws you to carrying a knife?

I want to know what draws you to carrying a knife.

I romanticize carrying a knife, I feel like if I have a good knife & good pair of boots on I can take on the world. I feel like that's all I need (albeit extremely wrong), but I just find the idea of being prepared (a knife and boots hardly counts, but that's a different topic) to be so cool. It makes me feel like a frontiers man of yesteryear, sure I ain't but it sure makes me feel that way.

extra points if you can name the boots.

There are few things more frustrating then not having tools when you need them the most, and a knife is just a simple tool you can carry all day everyday and then when you need it it's there, same reason I carry all the tools I need in my truck.

As someone else said here on bladeforums;

"Because God gave me neither talons nor fangs. "

I carry a knife because they just don't make good sheaths for a scissor half. :)
Honestly, it's hard to put into words. I live and work an office job in suburbia, so I probably could get by with a scissor half most of the time. Beyond the basic utility of a portable, edged tool, there's something primal and almost magnetic about carrying a good knife. Tradition is also a factor: I feel as if I'm honoring the memory of my ancestors by carrying a knife--which makes it more than just a sharp tool; it makes it something sacred.

To me a knife is the most basic tool yet the most versatile. Yes it is a cutting tool but it is also a tool the can do so much more with a little imagination. Knives can save lives, get rid of wives, great on under water dives. A good knife can last the rest of your life. With my knife, i am ready for anything.

I feel like there's something to carrying a knife that transcends utility, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I once worked in a liquor store. An older African-American female came in one day and started pulling all sorts things out of her bra looking for her money. One of the things she pulled out and laid on the counter was an old straight razor. I asked her why she carried a razor in her bra. She smiled at me and said "You never know when you might have to cut a fool."

I can relate.

Ahaha this is awesome.

I like knives for the same reason I like revolvers. Self defense really isn't an aspect of ownership of either. I just enjoy them. I like the looks, the feel in the hand, the ruggedness, etc. I liked knives ever since I was a kid and got a Case pocket knife for my birthday. Walked through the woods with it pretending I was an explorer.
