What folder would you buy if money was not a problem??

By the way....Obligatory Becker content for the OP

Just to hook you up

who needs a folder? :barf:

who needs a folder? :barf:

Some of us whose company policy does not allow us to carry one (on our person) at work, that's who. Also, when you're out drinking with friends or family it's kinda nice to have a knife on your person in a discreet sort of manner....I really don't want to educate all those people who ask why I have a knife hanging around my neck. A pocket clip, on the other hand...no one even notices. Even if it's a custom $500 folder.

Also, thank you for getting some Becker content in here. Really shoulda been labeled "Off Topic".

The 2 that I like the most aren't that expensive compared to others listed here, both have been on my want list for quite a while.... Spyderco Native 5 and Doug Ritter griptilian with Cuscadi scales... I have a FRN Native and absolutely love it, it was my EDC for many years until I got a 14/24.. I had a ritter minigrip and lost it a long time ago.. want another one eventually

haha Mike. I understand about policy, I will concede that point. But let me see if I can run the gambit on why people shouldn't carry folders as a primary/their only cutting tool (these are just for fun and not meant to be taken too seriously)

1. But folders are dangerous!!! They all open up inside the pocket without even touching them. (yes, a stereotype, just like a gun will go of if its sitting on a table with noone around, but people really do believe that crap...its fear-monger reasoning) ;)
2. The clip will ruin pockets edges.(this is a fact, sorry to say)
3. People are always cutting their fingers and hands trying to close them. (i've seem more accidental cuts happen because people become complacent with folder operation)
4. The clip is a serious zeroing in point for the cops. Who, if they are observant, always notice them. And should ask about it. (I'm always watching hands, but I look for knives more than guns)
5. Some require a safety!! Like a dang pistol!!! Whuuuuuuuuutttttt!? (I can't figure why a folder needs this at all, I guess see number 1 above, haha)
6. It's only half a knife and twice as expensive (stereotype, but look at a Sebenza and tell me it cuts better than an 11 or 14 or a 13 for that matter)
7. A folder has to be "opened" to be useful.....which movement and sound draws attention to ones self. This can sometimes have a negative effect in public places. Even in a restaurant. "Oh my god that man over there just pulled a knife!! Call the cops" (I can say I whip out my 14 in restaurants all the time and most people who won't hear it think it came with the table cutlery. It was silent and quick, no gross motor movement involved because its already open.
8, If you need "assistance" opening a folder...perhaps you really need a fixed blade;)
I got more, but I think we all get the point. Anyway, that was just for fun.:)

But to get back OT, I think if you really "need" a folder or flipper. Get a SAK, Case, Opinel, Ka-bar Dogs head or Buck 100 series. You can get some of those for over 100 bucks, if you really think you need to burn the cash to be relevant. And they cut just as well as a CR, ZT, Hinderer, Spyderco...yada yada yada

Blind Horse. I heard they folded.

Sebenzas and Umnuums look nice, but they're not really me.

I just want to flick one open over and over and over and over and over again to annoy people :p Just kiddin', I really do like 'em. The simplicity of design (from the blade profile to the lock) and outstanding execution really appeals to me. Plus they just balance right. Another BH recently asked me why I don't make folders and I told him sincerely, because I can't figure out how to design or build one any better than that, and copying it would be pointless.

At the price of custom folders you could probably have a fixed blade made to your specs.

Oh, absolutely. For the price of a lot of these production folders (Strider, CRK etc.), you could easily have two custom fixed blades built.

On the other hand, I firmly believe every knife person should own a Buck 110 and a Case Trapper (and you can get both for about $75 if you shop around). Although the steel in each could be better, neither is exactly "bad"; and those two will honestly do everything a sane person really needs a folder to do. If they're not sturdy enough for what you're doing with them... honestly... you need a fixed blade ;)

If cash was unlimited, I would buy the following folders:

Limited edition Spyderco WTC
All of the other Golden made Spydercos
A XM18 flipper/slicer grind with blue G10
Sebenza 25 with jewels/graphics/etc.
About a gross of customs...

And of course, I'd pay Ethan a couple hundred grand to make a custom, folding, proto BK9...

And I'd give Bladite enough money to make him send me a BK8--but that's not even a folder, so I digress.

Hah! as soon as I started reading this thread I thought about a comment about a folding bk9.

But in all seriousness. I'm saving my pennies for a ZT 560. I have seen a few for really good prices on the exchange but none that will ship to me in Canada. By the time I get to make another trip to the U.S for some blade shopping I may just save my pennies for the ZT 562cf.

OK, I'm convinced. I'll be putting ALL of my folders on the Exchange tomorrow, and start EDC-ing my 9/16 piggyback in azwelke pants (with the firesteel, ya know, just in case).

Yeah.....all but this one. I really do love the 0560. Plus, like JT said, it's really fun to flip open over and over and over while someone's talking to me and I'm not really listening cause they're actually not interesting and I hope they'll stop talking and ask me about my knife. ;)

Well, there is that... I was actually referring to some pretty (in)famous warranty complaint meltdown threads, though... :D

Andrew Demko's AD-10. Have you SEEN his load test on it? It's actually incredible. I wish more companies would consider his stuff because he actually does some great work.

Honestly....I would rather carry a fixed blade everyday. It's not socially acceptable in an urban environment...makes me sad. I would have my Helle Viking on my belt every day.

I'd probably go with a Laconico flipper. Blast 2, probably...very simple, no frills or inlays. I like his clean designs and functional blades.

Other than that, I'd probably just peruse the knifemaker exchange and snatch up whatever suited me at the moment.

Yeah, Ray's folders look pretty sweet.
