Hrm... Interesting question.
Confidence has many different aspects.
The blade has to handle what I'm going to face. Cutting boxes, making feather sticks, bend cutting brush, spreading butter, reaching to the bottom of the Nutella jar, cutting potatoes, perhaps batonning some kindling. You'll notice opening paint cans and prying apart crates isn't on my to-do list, at least not with my knife. <shrug> So sue me.
The handle has to be comfortable enough to be used for extended periods of time without hurting. It has to not hurt when I press hard, really, really hard into wood with it. Large and round is best.
It has to be light. Light enough to travel. Light enough that I won't think twice grabbing it and stuffing it in my pocket.
The joint and lock have to be bullet proof. Has to be durable enough to withstand stupidly hard cutting without developing play.
It needs to be able to withstand being dragged through dirt and sand without interfering with the lock. If I can't trust the lock when it's fouled with sand, I won't trust the knife.
Looks matter. I have to be confident that when I pull it out, people won't freak out. Otherwise, I'm likely to seek alternatives.
It needs to be not too dear. I've lost a bunch of things in my life, including knives. It sucks. Sucks more when it's a piece of jewelry. Forget that. It's a knife. Not my stinking life statement. If I loose it, my life carries on.
One knife for all this? Sure. No problem. Opinel #9.
