What I would like to see.....

Not knocking the H.E.S.T., or being critical of the designer, but what I would really like to see is:

If ESEE made this, I would be all over it. For me, the bottle opener serves no purpose except for a lashing point (you can open bottles with a lighter, belt buckle, piece of wood, etc.) and I think the esthetics greatly improve by eliminating it.

The prybar also doesn't do anything for me so this made me curious what it would look like with these 2 features removed but all others (thickness, grind, scales, remaining lashing points, etc.) left intact. This is the result. What do you think?

Repeating, no disrespect intended, just my take.

ETA, with scales, maybe something like this?

Please excuse the poor photoshop - I'm no dawsonbob!

Interesting, but i like the HEST the way it is. I don't own one. I think it has too many features that i don't care for in a fixed blade knife but i may change my mind in the future.
Overall, i think it fits a niche. It seems like a good knife for urban use.
The Izula, ESEE 3, and ESEE 4 already seems to fit for what you're looking for anyway.

I disagree. I own an Izula and an RC-3. Neither have the thickness (read durability/strength) of the H.E.S.T.

In Jeff's words (IIRC) it (the H.E.S.T.) fills the gap between the Izula and the 3.

HEST would kinda lose it's point. Actually the name would lose that.
But in another sense it would be a good idea. Although somehow it seems that this place (and the bigger Izula) will go BK14. But then again that's a Becker

I'd love to own something like THAT!
See, Myself, just like some other people, consider the HEST too aggressive looking. Yet the size, scales and shape are splendid. I don't own a HEST, and probably never will, due to the reason above. Yet, something friendlier looking, less "fancy" (bottle oppener, 'prybar', gimme a break...) would be way more appreciated; I'd actially get a couple.

I have looked at the HEST many times and have always been turned off by the bottle opener & prybar. I really like that design and would definitely buy one.

I like that design. It would also be nice to see some different colour coatings in the HEST. I would buy a tan one in a heartbeat

I open beer bottles with mine. Don't really mind the opener. As PR mentions, the prybar makes for secure grip. The knife wasn't designed for everyone. There's small things everyone won't like. Personally I'm not a fan of the wire breaker. But it's not a big deal, still like the knife

Yup, the "prybar" is just another fancy no sense gimmick on the HEST, yup... right up until you are stuck outside and the door leading in is frozen shut... then it is quite handy. Or when you are out 4wheelin and run into someone having strung barbed wire across the trail, and nailed it into the trees on either side... yeah, a plain old blade coulda bent the nails up to get the wire out from under, but is that really how you wanna use the edge of your knife?

Seriously, I was of the same thinking about the HEST when I first got it, but several times I have been out and about and the prybar has come in handy. Not that I couldn't find another way to pry something up.

So my vote is to leave the HEST alone, and get an Izula or a RC-3. :)

I like the HEST the way it is (hold/use one and tell me it's not one of the most utilitarian knives ever), but I could see room in the ESEE lineup for something like the OP suggested.

I’m not a RAT/ESEE purist. I think your design looks pretty cool. The thing with the HEST is that if you take away all the little oddities about it, it’s just another knife. Between your revised HEST and the ESEE-3, I’d take the 3. I’ve never been intrigued by the HEST, just doesn’t do anything for me.

I don't mind it, but I would prefer the original version. I actually like the prying feature, although I doubt I will ever really need to use it in a situation I didn't have something else on me at the time.

The DPx line is evolving into other gear and sizes, so something along those lines may be in the works in the future.

your mockup looks like a BRKT bravo a little bit, i like the HEST as is, and i am looking forward to the HEST folder.

I like your version Doc, I'd add to scale back the wire breaker blade beak...
that thing bites...
Scales look like the Original , I preferred as well.

I like your design, I don't have a HEST so I can't really talk to the overall functionality/usefulness of the stuff you removed but what you have there looks good. Just my opinion here but I think I would remove the laughing skull on the scales and make scale colour options if I was to do a redesign. Looking forward to seeing the folders design mentioned in another thread!
