I don't drink alcohol, so the amount of times I've needed a bottle opener in the last five years could easily be counted on one hand with fingers left to spare.

Sometimes, although rarely, I wish I were there with you. Other times, I rejoice that I'm not. HOWEVER, I do HIGHLY respect you for that, regardless of the reason (even if, say, you are just allergic to alcohol or something).

Also, to use the HEST primarily for opening bottles seems silly, it is a VERY expensive bottle opener

And what, pray tell, is wrong with that.

i use the glass breaker on my rc-3 to open beers. people recoil in terror when i pull the knife, but then smile and take their opened beer.

I've used that method, too. It actually works quite well. I haven't figured out how to open a bottle with the HEST's prybar, though, like RYP mentioned (or was that Jeff?).
