What is a good folder for a marine?

Hey guys. I have two friends in the marines right now. Well one friend technically is done with mos school and is leaving for Spain and possibly Iraq in July. My other friend is finishing up boot camp in July. I and another friend are planning on getting them knives to use for everyday tasks and possibly self defense of they are ever deployed and in a situation without a gun. We are both in college so we don't have much money. We are looking in the 50 dollar range or below for each knife

So far I have considered the spyderco tenacious and the Ontario rat 1. I own the rat 1 and I am pleased with it, but for the life of me I haven't been able to figure out where I left it in my house and I can't review how it feels in my hand during tasks. I don't own a tenacious but I have read the competition between the two knives is pretty fierce.

Does anyone have any suggestions on some good folders for a marine? I have read they will probably eventually be issued fixed blades so we want to get them something they can edc. Thanks!

I'll second that--Sosa is right. Love the clip point, but any of them will do. XHP steel for the win.

I would love to get that for them but I don't have 300 dollars for the two of them lol

Cold Steel Voyager series. They'll need a softer steel with a strong lock

Vic soldiers knife, they'll probably be issued bayonets so fixed blades are already covered. The Vic will provide a level of utility that will be very handy in the field.

They should get something these guys suggest, but I also think it is great for a soldier to have some kind of a SAK. So many great tools as well as a backup blade. There are many different kinds with different tools that may come in handy like screwdrivers, scissors, saws, or even a seat belt cutter.

If you are interested in Spyderco Enduras and they will definitely go to the service members, I have 2 new in the box I would let go for $100 for the pair shipped to you...just an offer.

I'll think about the offer. What color are they? You can pm me while the discussion continues

The cold steel voyager is a great option for the price point you may find an Aus 8 recon 1 for the price. The rat 1 is greathe as well I would say superor to the tenacious especially if they still have the d2 versions at knifeworks

Wouldn't let me PM...black FRN handle, plain satin blade.
On far left.

I'll look into a Swiss army.

A tenacious or rat one would not be advised?

I own a Victorinox One Hand Trekker. I think they fall around $40 US. Has a 3.1" blade which has a big hole similar to a spyderco for one hand opening, a very nice saw, a reamer, phillips head, can opener, a frame lock bottle opener which can be used as a pry tool, tweezers, and a toothpick. Both can opener, and bottle opener have a flat head screw driver on it (can opener has a small one). Also to mention, the blade locks using a left handed frame lock, so can be opened and closed with one hand. The blade comes in NS (non serrated) and half serrated versions. Hope your friends find a great knife that suits them.

Lemme talk to the friend I am splitting it with and I will get back to you. What steel are they? I have heard they had different runs
