What is a "survival" knife?

As far as presentation goes, the term 'survival knife' is simply a marketting gimmick. In reality by definition it is a cutting tool utilized to provide basic human necessities in order to continue existence. Depending on the survival situation, the tasks that the tool is required to perform will be different, and thus the ideal knife will be different. So, in passing, a 'survival knife' tends to refer to a strong multitask knife used to accomplish tasks required for basic human survival. According to Chapter 3 of the Air Force Survival Manual, these tasks are personal protection from environment and predators, sustenance, physical and psychological health and avoiding capture.
