What Is "Expensive"?

That Macallan 12 is a very decent scotch for 50 bucks. Talisker 10 year is quite serviceable for the price, wish I could find it locally. Under $50, I drink Jura 10, not quite so classy, but it's not a bad bottle.

What I think is too expensive is what I lose in time and materials when I try to cut corners on the cost of things.

BikerMike,
I agree. Lets start a new thread on making a home still that looks like a forge and quench tank.

This idea has a certain amount of appeal to me, however the experience from my Mountain William relatives has shown that although sower-mash sprites may technically be a single malt it still lacks the sophistication of the most humble Glenlivet. Also the mater of aging, If a jug made it through a week I was raised to think of that as old stuff.

Stacy, are you asking a question or trying to make some kind of statement?

I really don't care how much or how little anyone spends on making knives,... It doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

I've seen some great knives made with next to nothing and some very poor knives made at great expense.
Either way though...

Personally,… I’ve done it both ways and have had success and failure both ways.

I’d go as far as to say that I’ve spent both much more (a shop that would make most look rinky dink and podunk)...and much less at different points in my career, than the vast majority.

… Neither way made me a better knifemaker.

Both Sides

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev'rywhere
I've looked at knives that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on ev'ryone
So many things I would have done
But knives got in my way

I've looked at knives from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's knives illusions I recall
I really don't know knives at all

Wow, Tai. That is excellent.

Thanks Lorien.

Hey! It's just a spin off on an old hippy tune by Joni Mitchell... :)

Here's the rest of it...

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

Oh but now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From WIN and LOSE and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

From up and down and still somehow

I got an email once from a forumite that thought I was an elitist. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am far from it. I came from very simple immigrant stock, had no frills growing up. Worked hard, played harder, and paid my own way. I have a comfortable life, but not fancy ( beyond a good single malt now and then). I don't have any premium channels on the cable, text on the phone ( which is a plain freebie),eat out too often, out two cars are a 1998 Escort and a 2001 Voyager ( saved up and paid cash for both) My smithy and back yard look like those of a lot of other members of this forum...stacked full of stuff (stuff is the polite word for a lot of junk). I turn down job offers nearly every year that would double my income...because I don't want to work in a Mall for a big chain store, dealing with snob customers. Some of my favorite customers wear old jeans, drive a (nice by usable) truck, deal with us as equals, aren't demanding,......and could probably buy the whole store inventory in cash.

... Cut the loser talk Stacy! LOL :D

... seriously dude!

No one feels sorry for you.

Just cowboy up!

Throw your worn out old pocket book out the window, (shut up!) … and just make some frigging knives, with whatever you have or think you can afford!

I swear,... It'll be good therapy. :)
