Spyderco Impala....Just curious as to what is out there that you guys consider to be on par with the spyderco military in terms of size, quality, value, and price?
I had and broke 2 of them a few years ago.
Snapped the blades on both of them.
Now if you want to send me a new one for me to test to see if they are any better now. LOL
The blade profile is too thin for a hard use knife, I found that out the hard way. $$$$
Also here is a review that backs up pretty much what what I was saying since I don't have the pieces anymore to take photos of.

This interests me. Did the lock fail before the blade snapped? How did you manage to snap the blades in half? Also, I think just about any linerlock no matter how well made (perhaps the ti lite is an exception since the liner lock on that knife is stupidly thick) will probably fail if you push it too hard (batoning).
PS: judging by the amount of knives you have broken, I can see why you are a Busse fan![]()
The lock held fine on both of them. I was out in the field hiking in the mountians and stopped to make a fire and eat at another camping area. I broke one of them making firewood prying apart a piece of wood. It broke very quick too. I didn't have my fixed blade with me right then so I tried to use the Military.
The second one happened when I was at home doing some repair work and had to cut off some screws. Hit the spine with a hammer to drive it through and the blade just snapped after like 3 hits.
I am really very hard on knives though, harder than most I guess. I just expect them to take some punishment, most really can't or so it seems.
Prying firewood and batoning through screws???
Well yeah, a Buck 110 would and has handled those tasks for me before so I thought the super knife (Well that's what people said it was) should handle them.... I only bought them in the 1st place because I wanted to try some thing different.
Yeah my old Plumb 22oz framing hammer has broken more knives over the past 25 years than I can count. LOL
I should have had my Recon 1 with me that day and the screw thing, the Recon 1 had handled that too, I grabbed it after the Military broke and finished up with it.
Oh well live and learn.
I use mostly CS folders now for those things and always carry one of my fixed blades with me now just in case when in the field.
You baton with a FRAMING hammer??!!!
That's impressive.![]()
Ankerson, as you found out, the Military was not designed for what you were trying to do. Acually no knives are, but some are built extra heavy and may do those task, and those are the ones you/others should stick with for such task.
I like Busse, and if you must do such task with a knife I would always have a thick fixed blade on me, or at least a HeavyTank like folder with Thick blade tip.
Looking at the blade of the Military will tell you it is not made for prying, or metal screws.
Theres plenty of heavy tank folders out there, but heavy is not what I'm looking for in a large EDC pocket folder.
The light weight for size is the very thing I like most about the millie:thumbup: I have heavier large folders, but the Millie is the only one light enough to EDC and still be plenty strong for most any task you would expect a folder to perform.
PARA...... same knife - better ergos, better lock.
Just curious as to what is out there that you guys consider to be on par with the spyderco military in terms of size, quality, value, and price?
You aren't going to hammer a Cold Steel folder, or a Buck 110 through metal screws and not ruin the knife. If nothing else breaks the edge will give.
A folding knife is made to cut, it's not a hacksaw or an axe.
Ankerson! You cracked me up with that 22 oz. hammer breaking more knives than you can count. Busse knives were made for fellas like you!
Thumbs up to ya!

I was thinking about the Benchmade Dejavoo I played with at the local knife store a few times... I think (at least the one they have in stock) should be comparable in quality to the Millie... so I just ordered one from my favorite dealer... review (and vs. para review) to come!
